Yeah, but annual Champs-Elysée has only been here for 1975, so it isn't the biggest tradition in TDF, right?

Still you don't just dump 37 years of established tradition during what is essentially a festival of tradition. The Tour is always exceptionally resistant to change (as is the whole sport, it has to be said) and this just would be a strange time to change things.

I will just throw it here, what i wrote in "News in October" as the reaction to the posts there, but it belongs here better...
I really really doubt someone would like to skip the traditional champagne merchandise nothing is going to happen (when Vino retired) sightseeing tour de Paris.
But it could be surely epic stage...

Still you don't just dump 37 years of established tradition during what is essentially a festival of tradition. The Tour is always exceptionally resistant to change (as is the whole sport, it has to be said) and this just would be a strange time to change things.
I see nothing wrong in dumping a boring tradition like that. It's 36 years too late.

I am undecided but my point is more that the occassion kind of demands a tradition, if only so that it has something definite which it can point to and say "here is proof that we are part of a long line which connects us to the past."
But this is probably just the historian inside me talking.

I like the final stage finishing in Paris, it brings the 3 weeks to a close nicely and is also a high holy day for the sprinters. Leave it alone I say

You can see it as demanding a tradition, or as "hey, it's the 100th TdF, time to do something special". If that finish in the Alpe is true, they obviously chose the latter.

it would certenly be an exiting race and also favorites attacking on the first climb, but finishing in paris is for the sprinters the last chance for a win and the most prestigous one |

I strongly agree with you, i would have not a problem with skiping that marketing spectacle, which has nothing to do with actual racing. They can make the the post Tour criterium instead of it, if they need a champagne ride...
Onthe other hand Count is right they will just throw another dull stage to the mid Tour instead of it.

I do agree with you that it would be one more stage earlier in the race for the sprinters, but I think a stage up to Alpe d'Huez on the last stage of 100th edition of the Tour would be something very special.
I also think that to go out of the rule of finishing on the Champs-Elysèe would be refreshing. Instead of Cavendish finishing of the Tour with a victory we could have a battle between Contador, Schleck, Froome and Nibali etc. |

Imo it would be enough if they place the 20th stage in the mountains. Like in 2009 with the Ventoux.
If I have to choose between placing the 20th stage in the alpes and 21th in Paris or 20th stage somewhere in the flats and the last stage in the mountains, I would choose option nr. 1. There is really no difference on the outcome if they put for example Alpe d'Huez on 21 instead of 20. Even more is an anniversary no ground for experiments. You have to go with the tradition here. |
