Although still a relatively new event, the Maldon Dengie Tour is part of the Premier Calendar series for the first time this season. Indeed, it is the opening event of the series, taking place on 1st April
Known as the “Hell of the East”, the Maldon Dengie Tour is reminiscent in many ways of the classic Paris–Roubaix event, known throughout the cycling world as the “Hell of the North”.
The opening round of the Premier Calendar always produces some of the fiercest racing of the season as the teams battle to make an early impact and impress their sponsors, spectators and rivals alike. And, as Rapha Condor Sharp demonstrated last year as they helped Zakiri Dempster to victory, how the race is won will be all about team-work.
Although flat, the course is extremely exposed and prone to the cutting East winds which characterise the weather in this area in early Spring. Wind presents unique challenges, requiring quick thinking and selfless riding as teams protect their top riders and try to get them to the finish fresh and able to react to late breaks.
The road surfaces, or lack of them, similarly put unique demands on the riders and their support staff. Punctures require rapid bike changes as re-establishing contact with the front of the race after mechanical troubles can be nigh-on impossible in the closing miles.
My thoughts on this race? Its tough. 19km of cobbles, and 3 more km's of tracks, make this race. It will be won through strength and team work. Those North Sea winds could rip the race apart on a bad day.
This terrain suits me, but i will be limited to helping Lavery as he pursues our second win of the year.
Team
Leader; Lavery
Free Role; Bialoblocki, Williams
Team Mates; Hammarling, Rogers, Davis, Sampson, Cronshaw

You've seen the team, the route and a preview. Now here is the race.
Firstly, no Endura. They have announced that they are pursuing Pro-Conti races, with a view to being in the Top5 of the Pro-Conti division. As a result they will be at a very few, if any, of these british races. Which is great news for us!
As usual attacks came from the off. With Williams trying to get in a move. None of them stayed clear.
After 20km a move got away, including Cronshaw, Oliphant(RAL), Heinze(NSP), Simes(JSH), Cominelli(IDE) and Witecki(BGZ).
Williams put in a great ride to pull himself across the gap to join the group, just as they entered the main circuit area.
I was happily riding in the front quarter of the peloton, keeping close to Lavery if he needed me. Not quite sure who took this photo or why, but they must have had some reason...
The break built a gap of 5'40 at the 90km mark, before Miche and Leopard started to pull it back. This continued for the next hour or more.
On the penultimate section of cobbles the race started to split. Jungles, Brambilla(LET) and Franzoi(MIE) went off the front. Half the peloton fell behind. Cronshaw rode clear of the break.
This was where I had to start working to pull back the trio. Bialoblocki and Sampson aided the chase.
Together we finally got the trio back, having already swallowed the break, with 3km to go!
Rogers tried to set Lavery up, but it was crowded, and Lavery had to do it himself from 1500m.
With 600m to go Lavery was leading.
But in the last 100m Franzoi (yes the one who was in that trio for almost 30km) stormed (yes stormed) past him to take the win...

Comment; That was tough. I did a lot of work in the finale (around 15km of pulling) to try and give Lavery a chance. Ok, its disappointing he didnt finish it off, but 2nd is a great result, and better than the rest of the brits.
But the team seems to be carrying good fitness so the next races should (i hope) provide a win.
Everyone was happy with my performance today, as was i.
Rating; Karl - 7/10 ___ Node4 - 8/10

April 6th 2012
"Its my First Time, since my First Time"
Just thought i'd give you all an update, seeing as i've done my first UK race.
Maldon Denige, as i said, was tough. I was shattered afterwards. Alentejo was nothing compared to that. The wind, cobbles, tracks and ferocity of racing really took a toll.
We did go out to celebrate the result, even if it was only a 2nd place. And when i say we i mean me, Phil and Marcin.
I'm really getting on well with these guys. They are great. Phil is the second youngest team memeber so i guess we have something in common. Marcin is just fun, and has a wicked sense of humour. Word of warning, if he tells you to do something, dont do it, hes just trying to make you look like a cock... And yes he got me... I wont tell you how though, i'm still scared by it...
The last few days have been spent moving up to Scotland. I stopped off for a night in Bristol to spend a meal with my family. I also stopped off in Manchester to watch Man U play Chelsea, great day out. Before eventually making it to Douglas Castle this morning.
That covers the last few days. Next up, as you can tell, is the Tour Doon Hame.
I will see you there
Karl

Not happy with 2nd, should have been a win.
didnt notice Karl was 21st, that was good. He was actually leading a small group that got split just before the sprint. He can only go forwards (i hope)

Team; Williams, Kammarling, Sampson, Magnier, Higgins, Moss, Clarke, Frend
Everyone has a free-role as the field is quite strong
Stage 1
Attacks from the off, and a break formed quickly.
Cooke(XRG), Lapthorne(DPC), Parrish(OPT), Bisolti(IDE), Lloyd(IGS), Korus(KPC), Squire(CDT) and Sampson
The group built an advantage of 3'30, but the peloton wanted a sprint.
The break was swept up with 13km to go.
An Post were always in control of the lead-out, but it was a close finish...
1st Eeckhout ___ 2nd Downing ___ 3rd Brown
12th Williams 43rd Hammarling
Stage 2
We were at it from the off.
Frend attacked first, and I followed instantly. We got a gap and settled down to try and get away.
For the next 30km attacks flew from loads of people. Frend ended up back in the pack.
But I managed to tag onto the right move, but the effort had really drained me. I was never able to help set the pace, and spent the whole day struggling to stay on the back...
The full break was Ratti(IDE), Newbury(CDT), Aistrup(VPC), Averin(AMO), Norris(DPC), Durasek(ADR), Barker(UKY) and myself.
We got 4'30 at one point, but An Post, Endura and Wit were always working for the sprint.
I dropped out the break with 25km to go, totally spent.
The rest were caught with 8km to go.
Christina took charge and lead out well, leaving it to Reihs vs Eeckhout.

Comment; Ermmm..... 5th.... !!!
Not sure how that happened... Really no idea. I only got a few bonus seconds at the first IS, didnt think it was enough for 5th! Wow, i dont know what to say... Thats one of my goals done without even trying, or realizing...
First stage was the easier and we rode as expected as a team.
Second stage was mental, and very fast. Hoped for more as a team, but its all good progress in the right direction.
Rating; Karl - 8/10 ___ Node 6/10

"GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL"
Woo hoo! Top 5 in a Premier Calendar event. Only 2 race goals left, and signing a contract, but hey that should be easy now.
It was an interesting race for me. Stage 1 was boring, did some work to aid Williams, who got a decent finish. Stage 2 was not boring. Had to put in a lot of work to get into the right break, too much really. I should have sat up and waited for the peloton a lot earlier. I was so tired i didnt go training for 5 days, so i'm a bit off top form for now. Not that i can complain with the result. Best of the Rest is how most people see it, buts thats great for me.
And of course i went out to celebrate. A gig then clubbing in Bristol with a couple of old friends from school. Nice evening, and only a small hangover .
I arrived in Holland yesterday to settle into the Hotel. Tomorrow is the Wallaard, and the day after is the Noord. Two very flat races, so it'll be working to get a sprint finish. Not sure who will be the leader, who ever's got form out of Cronshaw, Rogers and Lavery. And hopefully a chance to get in a break and tick that off my list.
We are actually back with the Ladies team, as they have a similar on the 22nd to us. I've wished them luck. Hopefully some good results and we can all got out in Amsterdam next week...

Btw Manx, is this your first real story? I think you need to be drunk to write a ''proper'' story. |
