January 5th, 2013
Hello folks and welcome back to my blog, now in the year 2013!
I'm writing to you from Rome, where our new main sponsor UniCredit has one of their two head quarters. In a team meeting and several individual talks, we were getting prepared for hopefully another successful season. Just like last year, I will present you my racing and training schedule, once again I'm very happy about it.
And since my three-years-contract is running out after this season, I will also give you a brief overview about my thinking for the next year.
Like I said above, I'm very glad about the schedule our management has planned for me. It's a nice mixture of the obligatory helping services and a couple of chances to ride on my own. But have a look yourselves:
Part One:
12.04. - 14.04. | Vuelta a Castilla y León | 3 Stages | 19.04. - 22.04. | Giro del Trentino | 4 Stages | 24.04. - 01.05. | Tour de Romandie | 6 Stages | 07.05. - 29.05. | Giro d'Italia | 21 Stages |
As you can see, I won't start racing until April. Therefore, I'll immediatly start to prepare for my season highlight, the Giro d'Italia. Firstly, I will join Damiano Cunego and Peter Sagan on their Ardennes preparations in Spain. During the Giro del Trention and the Tour de Romandie, I will accompany Janez Brajkovic as we both prepare for the Giro d'Italia. That's right: In my third year in this team, I will ride the third Grand Tour. Just like at the Vuelta last year, I will be both co-leader aiming for the white jersey and Janez's main helper in the mountain. Since Damiano Caruso is also there, I hope to get quite a bit of freedom. We'll see how it goes, but I'm looking forward to this a lot anyway.
Part Two
02.08. - 03.08. | Tour of Elk Grove | 3 Stages | 07.08 - 12.08. | Tour of Utah | 6 Stages | 14.08. - 17.08. | Tour du Limousin | 4 Stages |
I will skip the national championships this year and return to racing in early August. I will lead a squad at both the Tour of Elk Grove and the Tour du Limousin, in Utah I'll be joined by Damiano Cunego so we'll see how that works out.
18.08. | Trofeo Melinda | 1 Stage | 21.08. | Vattenfall Cyclassics | 1 Stage | 22.08. - 28.08. | USA Pro Cycling Challenge | 7 Stages |
My two only one day classics this year are the Trofeo Melinda and one of my home races, the Vattenfall Cyclassics. I'm really looking forward especially to the latter. Racing in front of a home crowd is always special. And while I don't expect results there, I hope to excell in my last season highlight, for which I'll return to the United States: The prestigeous USA Pro Cycling Challenge. I'll lead there, supported by the locals Matthew Busche and Thomas Peterson.
This is the traning schedule the management composed for me. As you can see, there are two peaks, one for the Giro and one for the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. It's more balanced than last year where I had a very long period of racing, so I'm confident to be in shape when I need to be.
As I said, my contract with UniCredit is running out at the end of the season and I'm still uncertain what to do with this situation.
On the one hand, I am extremely grateful for what this team has done for me in the last two years. They have put a lot of confidence in me without applying any pressure and they offered me enough possibilities to prove myself.
Also, I have grown really fond of my team mates. Friendships have developed, not to mention the huge quality that our riders have, and from whom I can still learn a lot.
But on the other hand, this enormous quality prevents me of taking the leading role in the bigger races. It will surely take at least two or three years until I could actually count myself an absolute leader here. And I am really not sure if I want to wait that long.
Any opinions from your side on this topic are of course highly appreciated.
Looking forward to a great season,
truly yours,
|

What. A. Team.
Watch out to not 1-2-3 all Ardennes
Great to see one of the very best stories ever back, you made me like the real Dominik, and that's the best a one-rider-story can achieve
His season plan looks good, USPCC is already in the bag, and bookmakers don't even allow bets on the Giro white jersey anymore

@ sutty: Thanks, I hope so, too
@ cio: Yeah, I never had such a strong team ever before. And the Ardennes 1-2-3 is probably only prevented by the fact that I won't send Kreuziger there. But indeed, stats-wise, I have three of the seven best puncheurs in the world.
Oh, and @all: I have decided to play on extreme from the beginning, in contrary to what I wrote first in the indroduction post. I've played a bit more lately, with decent results, and with such a team it seems to be the only thing to do

This is a great schedule. The Giro should be the hardest GT for Dominik I guess.
The 2nd part is maybe the easiest with good chances for good results while the 3rd has some more highlights. Good to see that you start to lead more and more races. And I guess until the 3rd season part you have improved a bit more and who knows what you can show in the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.
I would wait for after the Giro to decide what team to take or to renew. Maybe even until after the 2nd part although this might be too late already. |

Perhaps there will be a new (German) PCT team, and Dominik can join it as absolute leader?

A good schedule, hopefuly Dominik will be fresh entering the Giro, and can secure a good result there. And hope for a successful year too, perhaps with another GC win! |

@ PCM rulezz: Thanks for the opinion I'm not sure yet, so any opinion is welcome!
@ roturn: Yes, the Giro will be an enormous challenge for Dominik. But he'll definetely grow with it I included some races with realistic chances for a top result as well, yes, so I think it's a nice mixed schedule.
@ fcancellara: Well, there are already T-Mobile (although that is in WorldTour), and of course NetApp. Who knows ... ?
@ FreitasPCM: Thanks! His Giro preperation should secure that he's fresh GC win ... well, maybe in autumn
Here's the Autralian Championships:

GreenEdge had a perfect start to their debut season winning both titles on home soil. Cameron Wurf as our team's only starter didn't do anything special.

GreenEdge comes with the strongest team which gives Allan Davis and Cadel Evans an advance. Haussler is the favorite when it comes down to a sprint but he's completely alone. Also, a win from a breakaway is always a possibility.

Porte, Rogers and Evans are the clear favorites. They are relatively close regarding their skills but their shape can vary a lot at this early point of a year. The rider with the best shape will probably win.
Haussler has a chance in the road race but he has no support whatsoever so he'll need some luck to actually succeed here. For the time trial, we don't expect any big things. A Top 10 should be realistic.
Road Race
The usual early morning breakaway consisted of five riders including Nicholas Walker (Rabobank) and Adam Hansen (Lotto). They started to get a really nice advance and GreenEdge didn't seem to be able or willing to pull them back, so Heinrich Haussler started to work himself.
That worked quite well until Michael Rogers attacked. A couple of riders like Gerrans and Evans followed, so Haussler countered as well. The group of about seven riders including some favorites and the rest of the break were about a minute behind Rogers. Haussler didn't have the energy to chase, the others obviously neither, so Rogers took the win. Haussler easily won the sprint behind.

Time Trial
Not much to say here. Cadel Evans started early and did a good time. Heinrich Haussler did reasonably good and would eventually end up 6th.
Evans' time was good but it didn't last until the end. Eventually, it was a pretty clear thing. Michael Rogers confirmed his strong shape and won this as well. Porte and Evans disappointed, while David Tanner surprised with a strong second place.

Unlucky in the RR with Haussler. But also 2nd is a good start as Rogers seems to be in a good shape already. Maybe even for the Tour Down Under. |

January 17-19, 2013 - Tour Down Under, Part 1
1 | Franco Pellizotti | Katusha Team | 19h29'54 | 2 | Damiano Cunego | Liquigas - Cannondale | + 3 | 3 | Jan Bakelants | Omega Pharma - Lotto | + 17 | 4 | Mauro Finetto | Liquigas - Cannondale | + 42 | 5 | Alessandro Bertolini | Androni Giocattoli | + 49 |
A mediocrely strong field including last year's third Jan Bakelandts. Other strong and very fast puncheurs are Daniele Ratto (BMC) and Leonardo Duque (Cofidis). For the sprints, we have Giacomo Nizzolo (Leopard), Davide Appolonio (Sky) or Francisco Ventoso (Movistar) challenging our duo Haussler and Ponzi.
We have a very strong team in our first race of the year. Haussler is our undisputed leader on his home soil. Simone Ponzi is a fantastic lead out and Marco Marcato our joker for the hilly stages.
Stage 1
Juraj Sagan was our man in the break and took the full points at the only mountain sprint. The break never stood a chance, though, and neither did any of the late attacks.
It came down to a bunch sprint with basically only one train: Our own. Burghardt, Oss and Ponzi brought Haussler in a perfect position but when the other sprinters started from his wheel, he reacted a small moment too late. Although the Australian had by far the highest end speed, he had to settle for the second place, just behind Giacomo Nizzolo.
Nizzolo had the better timing and defeats Haussler to take the ochre jersey.
1 | Giacomo Nizzolo | Leopard – Trek | 3h23'57 | 2 | Heinrich Haussler | UniCredit | s.t. | 3 | Davide Appolonio | Sky Procycling | s.t. |
Stage 2
Another break, another day for Juraj Sagan. He secures the maximum of points and therefore his jersey for at least another two days.
The final 10 kilometers were very hectic, with lots of attacks. Our team stayed calm until the last four kilometers, when Marco Marcato followed an attack of David Le Lay and Jan Bakelandts. He soon overtook them and was in the lead, but the sprint behind began: Michael Matthews had an amazing pace and overtook Marcato, but in his slipstream, he pulled Heinrich Haussler with him. Haussler tried to overtake him, but Matthews was able to hold him off. The two Australians were credited with a 12' gap to the next group, in which Marco Marcato was edged out by only some centimeters and lost the third place to Grega Bole, who brings Ferrari their first World Tour points.
Another second place for Haussler brings him in the overall lead.
1 | Michael Matthews | Rabobank Cycling Team | 3h40'08 | 2 | Heinrich Haussler | UniCredit | s.t. | 3 | Grega Bole | Ferrari Cycling Team | + 12 |
Stage 3
No break for us this time, with the ochre jersey on our shoulders we took control of the peloton. Without too much trouble, we brought the escapees back.
Again, our sprint train was predominant. And this time, Heinrich Haussler made no mistake! He went for it early enough and won the sprint with a comfortable margin in front of the strong Matthews and Anthony Geslin (FDJ).
First win with the ochre jersey, advantage increased!
1 | Heinrich Haussler | UniCredit | 3h09'51 | 2 | Michael Matthews | Rabobank Cycling Team | s.t. | 3 | Anthony Geslin | Saur - Sojasun | s.t. |
1 | Heinrich Haussler | UniCredit | 10h13'34 | 2 | Michael Matthews | Rabobank Cycling Team | + 6 | 3 | Giacomo Nizzolo | Leopard - Trek | + 24 | 4 | Anthony Geslin | Saur - Sojasun | + 30 | 5 | Grega Bole | Ferrari Cycling Team | s.t. |
1 | Heinrich Haussler | UniCredit | 20 | 2 | Travis Meyer | Team Garmin - Barracuda | 16 | 3 | Michael Matthews | Rabobank Cycling Team | 14 |
1 | Juraj Sagan | UniCredit | 32 | 2 | Chris Froome | Sky Procycling | 16 | 3 | Travis Meyer | Team Garmin - Barracuda | 14 |
1 | Michael Matthews | Rabobank Cycling Team | 10h13'40 | 2 | Giacomo Nizzolo | Leopard - Trek | + 18 | 3 | Juraj Sagan | UniCredit | + 27 |

This is a great start into the new season. Excellent results with the whole team so far. Marcato a bit unlucky but sure you will finish with at least 2 in the top10/5 again. |

Very good results in australia, Haussler has to hold that jersey to the end
