Academica had a crappy second half against Plzen but dominated the first half and lost two points with Hapoel at the end of the match on the only real shot on goal the Israelis had all match. They also had a great showing in Madrid (as did Plzen). I can't agree Plzen is "clearly" the 2nd place on the group, neither because of the quality of the game both teams have played nor the probable results in the two last rounds. If Academica win at home with Plzen and in Tel Aviv, Plzen has to at least draw with Atletico Madrid. And don't expect Simeone to put up a disconnected team again. He was beyond pissed with the team last night and they actually need the points because of next year's seeding in the CL.
Plzen is through...
And Sparta Prague too, i hope they will get Chelsea or City.

And suddenly, Basel crush Sporting with a 3-0 result. Sporting are out of Europa League, in their most EASIEST GROUP OF THE PAST THREE YEARS.
Racing Genk leading the group Well, they deserve it! The only team doing Belgium some honor at the moment

In a game where they were the worst team, not exactly supporting your argument that they were "clearly" the 2nd best team in the group, which was what I was discussing
It depends what you think is a worse team. You can think i am biased, but for me, Plzen is twice as good in football quality than Academica. In the last match, the portugese were pretty much focused on agression and dangerous tackles, rather than football itself. One can call Plzen lucky, but 5 point differential is clear enough imo and dont forget Plzen too lost to Atletico thanks to 94th minute goal.
So maybe not clearly, but at least still 2nd best team in the group imo. Academica got their only win against B-team of Athletico...
Offside position
It is not an offense itself to be in an offside position. A player is in an offside position if:
- he is nearer to his opponents' goal line that both the ball and the second-last opponent
A player is not in an offside position if:
- he is in his own half of the field or
- he is level with the second-last opponent or
- he is level with the last two opponents
Offense
A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by:
- interfering with play or
- interfering with an opponent or
- gaining an advantage by being in that position
I wonder if being outside the bound of the playfield means that he never can be offside. Because if that is true, then every team could position a player behind that line. The player would just have to wait until the ball has been played, then run onto the field again. But as far as I know, it is not allowed to enter the field unless the ref allows it.
I cannot think of any other explanation because he obviously was "gaining an advantage by being in that position". I know the rules mention the "opinion of the referee" but can the ref really have another opinion? That guy scored the goal.
at euro 2008 The Netherlands scored a goal because an Italian player was behind the goal which made the offside rule invalid. so that guy who scored was offside so it shouldn't have counted

I don't know how it is with an attacker but a defender outside the limits of the field cannot be considered for offside purposes. However, if the player exits the field intentionally, the ref should then consider his position to be on the line.
On the cenario you described, if a player intentionally leaves the field to exploit the offside rule, not only does he still count as being on the line but also receives a yellow card for it.
