It could be worse... it could have been the day of suffering real-life Dario had *today*!
Good luck in the Giro - it looks like you've got the form working out just right! |

Thanks a lot everyone. Dario is going into the Giro with 89 Fitness, and his peak is set for the final 2 weeks, so I think he will be in alright shape.
The Giro Preview will be up shortly, and I hope I can get the prologue up tonight.

This years Giro, starts off with a prologue, and then a few days after we have a Team TimeTrial, so being able to race against the clock, and do it well as a team will be vital to any of the team leaders that want to win the race!
However this is not a requirement, so if you dont like that discipline, you can always attack in the mountains, which come in the 2nd half of the race, with some shorter hillier finishes in the first half, to get the leaders climbing legs warmed up for the last two weeks.
This version is expected to be widely contested, with almost every team having a worthy leader, and some who even have two worthy leaders! This should only improve the races excitement, of course in the spectators perspective, because anyone trying to win this race will have an extremely difficult time, no doubt.
The Contenders
Vincenzo Nibali - Liquigas
Nibali is one of the heavy favourites for the win. Why? Well, Nibali has an insanely strong team around him, with the goal of helping him win. Capecchi, Moser, Basso and Szmyd should all be dedicated to him, although maybe not Basso who could turn out to be in more off a Free role. As well as what Nibali's got around him, he is also a good time trialer, a great descender and one of the best climbers participating. He will also get a boost from the home crowd, sometimes known as "tifosi". If you had to pick a rider to get on the podium, Nibali would probably be your safest bet!
Damiano Cunego - Lampre
Cunego, has won the Giro in the past, and while many think he has since then lost his climbing ability, I think he still has it in his legs. He may never be a dominant climber, but on his day, I think he can be up there with the best in the Giro. The shorter climbs which are scattered in the first half of the Giro will suit him well, so we may see him in the Pink early on, although its tough to see him winning the race!
Michele Scarponi - Lampre
And if Cunego is not able to supply Lampre with its goals for the Giro they've got a great back-up in Scarponi. In some of the tune up races for the Giro, Scarponi has been on fire, so we know he is heading into the Giro on some solid form, and with Cunego's form being unknown, Scarponi could be a sleepers choice in making the Top 5. He is also a bit stronger on the longer climbs, but if Cunego was to get Pink, would he sacrifice his ambitions for a rider that probably has no chance at winning?
Ryder Hesjedal - Garmin
Ryder has made the Giro his season goal, and Garmin has finally invested in supplying a team willing to work for him, in his goal of winning a Grand Tour! I really think he will be a strong bet for the Podium, but if he's on good form he could be one of the best climbers in the Giro alongside Nibali. I am excited to see what he might do.
Robert Gesink - Rabobank
I personally dont believe that Gesink is in very good form, but we know he is a very good climber, so it would be wrong to forget about him as a favourite for the race! He is known for crashing his bike at crucial times in a race, so lets hope he can stay upright, and then maybe he'll be in this with a fight.
Thibaut Pinot - FDJ
Pinot is maybe the most promising climber in the world right now. He has proven to be a very good one already as well. If he's in good fitness I can see him being in the lead group on the climbs. A Top 10 is very possible for him, although I dont see him really giving it his all, when the Tour de France is probably his goal.
Outsiders
Ivan Basso - Liquigas
He has won the race before and we know he is a great climber, but I suspect he will be working for Nibali, and that means he will be sacrificing his own chances.
Thomas De Gendt - Vacansoleil
De Gendt may squeak into the Top 10, and we know he is great in final week TT's so that plays into his advantage. If he can limit his loses, he may be able to fit in the Top 10 by the end.
Igor Anton - Euskaltel
Anton has done well in GT's in the past, but he's very inconsistent and usually when he comes to the Giro he prefers to target the KOM, meaning it will be hard for him to ride a good GC as well, assuming he does go for the KOM.
Rigoberto Uran - Team Sky
Uran is looking at his first real opportunity as Team Leader in a GT, so I think he will have a slow learning curve to this Giro. Still by the third week we could see him up there, but he isn't that great at TT's either.
*Dario Cataldo - OPQS
Dario is coming into the Giro on decent form, and we know he wants to do very well at the Giro this year. He can probably get a Top 10, but apparently he wants a Top 5 at worst, which will be tough for him with the field we have here this year. He has a good team around him willing to help and he is a good climber and TTer so he will probably only ever lose about 30 seconds on a day, and with consistency can make that up.
Domenico Pozzovivo - Colnago
Pozzovivo may become more of a stage hunter in this Giro, but with his natural climbing ability we may see him do a great ride from time to time, but he will probably find it hard to get a Top 10.
Tejay Van Garderen - BMC
He is well known for his TTing ability, but recently he has been discovered as a strong climber as well! Of all the outsiders he is one of the more likely candidats to get a Top 10, because he will be able to keep up on the climbs, and any time he does lose, he will easily make up in the TTs.
Podium Prediction:
* Vincenzo Nibali
** Ryder Hesjedal
*** Michele Scarponi
Cataldo Prediction:
7th Place

So it is finally here, good luck in Italy, you will need it against the strong opposition. Personally i think that top 10 would be a nice success for Dario.

Good luck. The start list looks like a realistic Giro startlist. 7th place would already be quite a success I guess. |

@ freitas: In that case I will try extra hard to reach the goal
Giro d'Italia: Prologue
Full Startlist
Cataldo's Report
I started out the ride in good time. I was really enjoying my time in Denmark and the ride was quite fun. I had obviously done it a few times already, but its one of those riders that gets better each time, in time as well. I could tell I was going to put in a good time.
I crossed the 1st Time check and I was 12 seconds down, in 12th! Great time I thought, not many GC riders going to be ahead of me!
I got to the finish, and thought I would have put in an even better time, but turns out I lost some spots. However, I only lost one second and thats all that really matters!
Later in the day, Tejay Van Garderen came blasting by to win the prologue, and start off the race in Pink! I think he'll be a threat, but I dont know how strong he is in the high mountains!

Dario started well, and he's even in front of Nibbles. Not that it is relevant in the first stage, but oh well. |

@ all: thanks a lot. It was indeed a nice start for Dario!
Giro d'Italia Stage 1
Race Report
The stage was quite dull, and my job was to sit inside the peloton anyways! I think the team did well to protect me, but I think Chicchi would have liked a Top 5 today. Still, a good day, and nice win for Hondo in the sprint. Lampre surely happy with the triple!
