Stage 4
lh4.googleusercontent.com/-CJJ-DluDF9I/T_3U6HcKQvI/AAAAAAAABH4/rd8nRArF2cw/s250/4.profile.jpg
Foligno - Monteluponi - 171km

lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Pj5MwwXU8Dc/T_ss0pzetwI/AAAAAAAABDo/LkPOzWvOGiw/s20/audio-input-microphone-4.png Comment
Things start to get a little more serious today. This stage could challange a few riders and the late short, steep climbs could be used as a springboard for attacks.

lh5.googleusercontent.com/-bv5VioVWR0w/T_3U5a62QkI/AAAAAAAABHg/Uhv6Dbhxfhw/s400/4.nibali%2520froome.jpg
Today Nibali and Froome decide to play their cards early. Far too early.

lh4.googleusercontent.com/-H2hFSKzmNns/T_3U4l-YPVI/AAAAAAAABHY/BL5Xahn0bhA/s400/4.ballan.jpg
Ballan makes the first serious attack on the penultimate climb.

lh5.googleusercontent.com/-pu8DHMij6Ys/T_3U5pWpg6I/AAAAAAAABHk/VrV76FRI0dg/s400/4.nuyens.jpg
Several others respond, one of them Nick Nuyens. Will The Missile fire today?

lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AR7c5jJwPzA/T_3U4-PqgbI/AAAAAAAABHo/CegWpJoD40U/s400/4.ballan2.jpg
The peleton is all brought back together over the top, but Ballan clearly hasn't learned his lesson and sets off again as we approach the finish. Actually, his attack is shaping up quite nicely as we hit the climb...

lh5.googleusercontent.com/-vGNsHBZktAk/T_3U6Glz8QI/AAAAAAAABHw/E_iLSTQW_SU/s400/4.nuyens2.jpg
Amongst others, Cancellara and Visconti respond, which Nuyens feels obliged to counter.

lh4.googleusercontent.com/-i3r6E31zeNA/T_3U6hEABmI/AAAAAAAABII/h7lKXTmjDD8/s400/4.sprint.jpg
As we approach the finish on gradients of almost 10% a five-man 'sprint' is shaping up between Cancellara, Visconti, Oss, Nuyens, Ballan and Hincapie. The readers will appreciate that there is surely only one outcome of this scenario...!

lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RqRZpJCkgto/T_3U4thr3II/AAAAAAAABHc/H2Z93ok7i_k/s800/4.finish.jpg
However The Missile fails to fire up his cylinders and lets Visconti off the hook to take the stagewin and please the Italian crowd.

lh6.googleusercontent.com/-c6M_rCN843E/T_3U6FVAklI/AAAAAAAABIE/crReoYQ4Xss/s800/4.nuyensfinish.jpg
A promising 3rd place for Nuyens, which moves him into 4th in the GC ahead of tommorow's time trial.

Stage 7
lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TnlVImcMsMI/T_86VSPOXSI/AAAAAAAABJ8/GoS3rLyT1t4/s288/7.profile.jpg
Manosque - Fayence : 191km

lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Pj5MwwXU8Dc/T_ss0pzetwI/AAAAAAAABDo/LkPOzWvOGiw/s20/audio-input-microphone-4.png Comment
This penultimate stage could prove to be an uncomfortable one in the saddle for many, including us as we look to conserve Moerenhout's top 10 GC placing on unpredictable terrain. The extreme winds today add to the strain.

lh4.googleusercontent.com/-k9LYyJP6cv4/T_sr-sjecOI/AAAAAAAABDQ/JqmUfVsy87s/s800/newspaper_16.png Race Report

lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G_O-5RpAxAs/T_86ULK7kII/AAAAAAAABJg/h1tWdtZDcig/s400/7.break.jpg
The day's break - Dessel, Barry, Russ, Righi, Pujol Stangelj, Uran, Morizot and Romain Feillu, who are later joined by Dyachencko, Morabito, Vaugranerd, Buffaz and King of The Mountains, Jerome Pineau.

lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1as04aLeD5g/T_86WL-x_nI/AAAAAAAABJ4/UOiK5ANo1mw/s400/7.split.jpg
Then something peculiar happens, as the severe crosswinds are exploited by Lotto riders. As you can see several of our riders make it across the split, but leader Moerenhout does not rank amongst their numbers..!

lh3.googleusercontent.com/-is9s5MH53Ps/T_86T1VUY3I/AAAAAAAABJc/SXcAfaJ3Xgo/s400/7.bbox.jpg
Thankfully BBOX soon solve our dilemna by pulling the rest of the group back together.

lh5.googleusercontent.com/-bpiiwY6iV7k/T_86XoWXOMI/AAAAAAAABKY/KMa7RrhAxyM/s400/7.moeren.jpg
On the day's major climb, Moerenhout stays alert to moves from the likes of Contador and Gerrans, but nothing comes of it.

lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9YZLex0hp7M/T_86ffs4NwI/AAAAAAAABKg/kd6nLrocE_A/s400/7.uran.jpg
Escapee Uran fights hard but the wind buffets him back to the peleton. An 89-man group now prepares to take on the uphill finish.

lh3.googleusercontent.com/-D47AZ4RD5DU/T_86UKf7QtI/AAAAAAAABJY/MmMdN0djcXU/s400/7.attack.jpg
Gilbert, Contador, and Pellizotti shoot off before we can begin! Not for the first time today, Moerenhout is caught off guard in the bunch, but Tankink helps him launch a counter move.

lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C_AGD1_wH8g/T_86VFobrfI/AAAAAAAABJw/js8Pz24VRqE/s800/7.finish.jpg
Gilbert streaks off into the distance and soars to the victory and likely race leadership.

lh6.googleusercontent.com/-olK3-lsB_lU/T_86U253iHI/AAAAAAAABJk/ylOlpssOOfk/s800/7.fin_moerenhout.jpg
Somewhat stupidly, we have told Moerenhout push on after Gilbert. He is caught and crosses the line empty in 8th place, alongside the frantic Maillot Jaune of Voeckler.

lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Pj5MwwXU8Dc/T_ss0pzetwI/AAAAAAAABDo/LkPOzWvOGiw/s20/audio-input-microphone-4.png Comment
Despite making 15 seconds on the peleton, Moerenhout's 8th place is snatched by Pelizotti by a single second. Still, we would be happy to retain this placing as we head into Nice for the race finish tommorow.

Nice ride by Nuyens in Italy Wink

Another new story and evidently another story-telling failure.

Ah well, maybe in another 5 years I'll save up for a new laptop and write a story about this mythical PCM12 they speak of...

But otherwise I'll resolve not to bore the site with any un-engrossing (gross-ing?) stories of ages past and forgotten any more Pfft

The good news is that I can go back to winning races with crappy teams on easy mode now haha! Angry
