Team Augantis 2012 - Wikipedia 2013 (Down Under)
The Rider
Season 2:

"Out with the old in with the new"

img109.imageshack.us/img109/5729/imagescaliur62.jpg

From now on Augantis will be known by there main sponsor, world renown, Wikipedia. The team will be American backed but will not forget the ties made with lithuanian cycling, under the aegis of the Augantis brand.

What to expect from Wikipedia in the coming season. I hear you ask?

Snazzy new outfits YES Attacking riding YES
But most importantly there will be a roster of 29 immense riders ready to ride.

The Team

The Leader:

img837.imageshack.us/img837/273/pcm0007.jpg

The team will be spearheaded by American vet Levi Leipheimer. With a strong squad Wiki should hope to get invited to some major races, grand tours, (fingers crossed) where Levi can compete against the best over three weeks.

Goals for Levi:
- Top ten Tour de France
- No.1 Tour of California
- Become face of Wiki cycling
- Don't burn out before big races!

The Dark Horse:

img834.imageshack.us/img834/4773/pcm0008l.jpg

Augantis possess a squad with proven riders such as Valjavec, Popovych and David Rebellin, so to highlight Mauro Finetto may be a bit odd. He only had one victory with Augantis and was often by the rear of the peloton. However, Wiki believe he has the skills to become a great classics rider, he has a great sprint coming on and has the ability to get over hills, when on form.

Goals for Mauro:
- Top 10 Milan-Sanremo
- Win two races
- Increase sprint quality
- Complete one grand tour

The Prospect:

img850.imageshack.us/img850/9729/pcm0009a.jpg

At 25, Alex Howes is one of the youngest riders on the roster. Wiki have informed Howes, that there is no pressure on him to perform, hoping this tact will see him further develop. It will certainly be interesting to see if any results come from him in the coming season.

Goals for Howes:
- Ride in the Tour de France
- Multiple Top 10 finishes
- Develop multiple attributes
- 70 Days of racing complete

At the October 25 deadline Wiki had 29 riders signed for the season. But then a massive name rider became available, Wiki increased the budget and signed.............

img692.imageshack.us/img692/7231/pcm0006bv.jpg

SAMUEL SANCHEZ

After not signing a new contract with Euskadi, many people thought he had retired, however, he accepted a paycut and has signed with pro continental Wiki. His main goal will be the Vuelta, unlikely at this point if he will race the Tour.

The full squad (30):

img444.imageshack.us/img444/5771/pcm0001s.jpg

img38.imageshack.us/img38/228/pcm0003p.jpg

Notes on other less known riders:
- Pawel Cieslik - 16th world championships 2012
- Mantas Bliakevicious- Lithuanian champ 2012
- Aivaras Baranauskas- Will retire at end of season
- Andy Jacques- Maynes- USA road champ

Some goals there are a bit unrealistic, everyone apart from the grand tours are achievable realistically.

Personal Goals:

- Gain promotion (finish in top 2 for continental teams in superprestige rankings.)
- Develop riders
- Scout new riders into the team

The main competition for promotion will come from:
- FDJ- Fedrigo and Demare
- Aqua & Sapone- Gadret and Garzelli
- Greenedge
- UHC- Tony Martin and Sutherland
- Team Type 1- El Fares- Callegarin

Some good news.

Wikipedia have successfully gained entry to the Tour down under. Wiki will send an all American/Lithuanian team there as it is the first race. All 30 riders are on training camps: in Australia; Malaysia or France.

In other news Floris Goesinnen has had some Angina!

The first of many races for Wikipedia is at the Tour down under. The 2013 course is not overally testing and it looks as if a sprinter could claim the overall honours.

Prominant riders taking part include:
Mark Cavendish
Rigoberto Uran
Alessandro Ballan
Chris Froome
Sky may also want to send Richie Porte who just wrapped up both National championships.

Team Wiki:

With many riders out of shape, the fittest will be the ones fighting it out for victory.

Stage 1:
img705.imageshack.us/img705/3798/pcm0013m.jpg

Stage 1 is one of the more difficult stages, although sprint bound, an attack in the closing kilometers could work out.

Early on plenty of riders tried to get away. Kuyckx (lotto) took the mountain sprint from an early break before being reeled back in. 1 nine man break was established with Galimzyanov, Jetse Bol and Julian Dean (who took both sprints.)
Much of the day Project team and Vaconsoleil were riding on the front.[/center[center]]img694.imageshack.us/img694/4683/pcm0018y.jpg

Wikipedia's riders were taking it easy in the bunch today, until with 50km to go Ben Jacques-Maynes fell whilst on water bottle duty! Sky started the chase with 30km to go and the break was caught with 9km to go. All the sprinters were to the front in the finale, as a short climb before the end saw Gerald Ciolek accelerate away from everone else. Kroupis (8th) was wiki's best result, a good result as he wasn't in the top 15 fav's.

Stage 2:
On this day it took 45km into the race before a break was established properly. It was Wiki's Ben Jacques Maynes (the only rider more than 10 seconds down) started it. It looked like he was going for a lone break untill blue mountain jersey wearer Kuyckx(Lotto) joined in.
img339.imageshack.us/img339/1809/pcm0024.jpg

This was another flat stage with a few lumps in the middle, Kuyckx went on to take all 2 bonuses and further consolidate his lead in the mountains classification. With 20km to go the gap back to the peloton was 2 minutes, but with Sky driving the peloton the twosome were always going to be caught.

img98.imageshack.us/img98/9130/pcm0026k.jpg

Feelin good Chad Beyer (Wiki) and Yuri Trofimov countered when the break was caught with 5km to go but never really made a gap. Cavendish took the sprint after an exceptional lead out by Berny Eisel. Wiki's best finisher was Kroupis again finishing 8th after some decent wheel hopping. Goss moves into the lead

Stage 3:
img217.imageshack.us/img217/7669/pcm0027.jpg

This is the stage that is likely going to decide the GC. Enrico Rossi(Lampre) and Bookwalter (BMC) attacked right from the start and where joined by O'Grady, Duque, Minard and Haller for the break of the day.

Rossi took both sprints and O'Grady took the mountain sprint but had no impact on the jersey and comps and the break was caught with 8km to go. Much of the day Astana, Vacansoleil and Project were riding, as Leipheimer was one of the fav's along with roche and uran, Wiki put some men on the front but took them off as Levi was n't feeling great at the final.

At the summit of the penultimate climb Matty Goss (1st) attacked, he joined up with the break at 9km to go and then attacks from Marcato, Ricco, Rui Costa and a whole bunch of riders lifted the race on the final climb. Feillu had a amazing speed as he timed his attack perfectly to take the win and the overall jersey, Zaballa came from nowhere for a second. Levi Leipheimer was wiki's best finishing 24th at 13 seconds in a large group Ched Beyer crashed with 15km to go but continues on.

Stage 4:
img10.imageshack.us/img10/34/pcm0036h.jpg

After some big time gaps opened up yesterday a large 14 man break was able to get away, the best placed man in it was Manuel Belletti (AG2R) at 1:48. Vacanoleil were controlling the race for much of the day.

img163.imageshack.us/img163/9184/pcm0037x.jpg

With 30km to go Sky and Astana really started to reel in the powerful break. But that didn't stop Sebastian Chavanel from trying to attack. The peloton was been driven along by Eisel and Hammond and in the closing kilometeres the break was caught. Kroupis could not handle the pace being set by Eisel well, and was empty by the time he got to 300 meters to go. Cavendish was a class apart winning by a distance, Feillu consolidated his lead finishing with almost a time gap over the rest of the bunch.

Not the best of days for Wiki Kroupis (37th) was the best finish, whilst three riders were caught up in crashes in the closing kilometers.
