Danny's Plan

I will just sit back and relax in the peloton today. If I have to I will chase the breakaway, but if not, it should be a relaxing day.

Race Report

The race began with a large break getting free, containing our own Christian Meier.

I was enjoying my time in the peloton. Despite the strong winds, I was comfortable letting the break get a large gap, which was at about 4'40" at it's peak.

But suddenly the relaxation was over as I was called to the front of the pack, as the break, which was set to be caught, had suddenly extended it's lead to over 2'00" with only 12 kms. We were struggling to get a train going due to the gusty winds.

And now with 2.5kms the break has a short lead over the pack, will they hold on? Goss was trying to get on Bennati's wheel.

But the break held on! With no time gap, Alfredo Balloni (Farnese - Vini) sprints ahead of Martin Maaskjant (Garmin). Meier was nowhere to be seen, while Goss wasn't having a great day (-4), and sprinted to 28th.

Post-Race Comment

This was not our stage. Although we got a man in the break, he couldn't hold on in the windy conditions. And of course we excpected more from Matt, but it wasn't his day so he couldn't do much more. Atleast he held onto the GC lead.

Bad stage for everyone.

I like the use of the jerseys in the results. Haven't seen that since Squire's story.

The stage begin with a flurry of attacks to form a large group, containing mainly riders looking to get bonus sprint seconds.

Along with Svein Tuft and Jens Mouris we eventually brought the group back, but not before Alexandre Blain (Endura) could take the 9 points.

The next and final break to get away was a 3-man group. They developed a decent lead, and with 28kms left were 2'10" in front.

Several teams had decided to chase now, including us. They were on the brink now though, a sprint finish seemed like a safe bet.

They were soon caught, and with 7.5kms remaining, we started our train of Albasini, Langeveld, Lancaster and Goss.

Langeveld was out of gas, and Lancaster took over, 3kms from the line.

We did all we could for Matt, I think he kicked just a few seconds late. But 3rd is still solid, and he is still holding the yellow jersey.

Tomorrow the race will be decided, we need to bring our A-Game!

Danny's Plan

Today is the queen stage of the tour, with the first real MTF of 2012. Despite his seemingly poor fitness, Albasini has been given the leader role. I will just relax in the peloton, until the final climb where I will do my best to keep up.

Race Report

Almost immediately, the pack allowed a large break t get a large gap, at about 5 minutes with 80kms to go.

The landscape of Oman was suddenly far more bumpy, and the riders were catching a glimpse of some of the more beautiful parts of the desert.

As the break was about to start riding up the climb, their gap was almost completely distinguished.

And the first attacks come! They are from Nicolas Roche (AG2R) and Hubert Dupont (1t4i), but the Irishman looks better off and gets a gap while Dupont evaporates into the group.

I was struggling to hold on. I was doing my best to get to the front, but I was stuck in the pack, and going backwards.

And Roche was riding strongly, with less than a kilometer remaining he had a sizable gap!

And he takes it! Great win, and the overall win is in his grasp!

As the following riders sprint in, Daniel Moreno (Katusha) takes 2nd, with Dan Martin (Garmin) rolling over in third. GreenEDGE's best rider is Albasini at 49th! Not the best for us..

Exhausted, I cross the line in 82nd place. The fact I was riding next to J.C. Peraud over the line gave me some confidence though.

Well what did we expect. We have no real climber on the team, so really we can't be too dissapointed. We have to focus now on the time-trial tomorrow, and then getting Goss another win on stage 6. Heads high.

Very nice reports from Oman. I think you have screenshot paranoia Pfft You screens are as good or better than mines Wink It was always going to be tough on the Green Mountain. Now just hope Goss can get a stage at the end and overtake Rojas in Points Classification.

I can tell you one thing, your screens are actually so nice. Maybe it's just me but I love them. Mine are looking better ( Pfft ) but still not as good as yours.

Anyway back to the racing, thank you, I am very confident Gossy can win that points class. Wink

Danny's Plan

Today is the time-trial as you can see, and at nearly 20 kilometres it can create some decent gaps. I will just ride 100% and try my hardest, but I'm not expecting anything amazing. Svein Tuft is probably our best rider for today

First notable rider to set off is J.C. Peraud of AG2R. He is a terrific time-trialist, but is obviously in poor form. He would finish 22nd today.

Svein Tuft was off. He's a great time-triallist and set the best time yet, but would finish the day in 11th. Well done for him.

I rolled off the start block fast, but my day wouldn't be my best. I rode the hills well, but lost time on the downhills. I finish 38th, not too bad.

The US-Champion Dave Zabriskie was the last notable rider on the road before the real favourites start. He rode a great race, finishing 4th.

Astana's leader Janez Brajkovic had a slightly disappointing day yesterday, but was more convincing today finishing in 2nd place.

Time-trialling has been an eternal struggle for the Schlecks, and this time it's Andy on the road. He has a mediocre day, but not too bad as he comes in 17th.

With 6 KoM points on offer, lots of riders were trying to join the break. A 4-man group were the only ones to get ahead though.

The now 5-man group rode uphill once again. The eventual winner of the points was the Canadian François Parisien from SpiderTech.

Move ahead 75 kilometres, and the break still has a 2'00" lead with just 18kms remaining. I was sent to the front to chase, and I got a small gap.

And now, I was in the group! My gap grew and I, along with two others, joined the group. The gap was closing though...

And we were caught, as the trains sped things up, Koen de Kort was left alone up front, but he would dissolve soon.

And Matt Goss kicks at a perfect time, and he takes an early lead. Another perfect lead out from the specialist Brett Lancaster.

And he wins it! Another dominant win for Goss! Unfortunately Rojas came 3rd, meaning he keeps the points lead ahead of Goss.

And just a little further back was another GreenEDGE rider celebrating! It was me! I was so happy for Gossy, and to finally finish my first race for the season! A great feeling!

Overall, I would say a good race. We had no real chance in the GC, but did what we could taking two stage wins with Goss. Shame he couldn't grab the points lead, but no biggie. Daniel T impressed, as did Svein Tuft and of course Brett Lancaster was a terrific lead-out.

Monthly Review

Although we got no overall wins, we earned two stage wins in Oman with Matt Goss. Langeveld dissapointed slightly in the Omloop, but bounced back with a 7th place in KBK.

In other races, Mark Cavendish began his MSR warm-up with three wins in Qatar, David Arroyo continued his strong early season with a win in Portugal, and Fabian Cancellara and Tom Boonen showed their ambitions for the cobbled classics with wins for each of them.

Sacha Modolo had an amazing month, winning a total of 7 (!) races! He dominated in Malaysia, then continued throughout Europe.

Young Fanelli had strong performance throughout races in Europe, but didn't earn a win.

What's going on guys?
Welcome to my first blog since Oman, and speaking of Oman, the race was awesome, great to finally be back on the bike.

I've been hanging out in Paris with some of the guys, and it's great to be able to relax before I start racing again. I went sightseeing with Svein, who's been a really great mentor for me so far, and we're becoming good mates too! Paris is such an amazing city. When I saw the Champs-Élysées it was really encouraging to think I might be here one day after riding 21 days at Le Tour!

Anyway, here's my schedule for the month of March:

As you can see, I'm in Paris for a reason, as the race starts tomorrow! I will just be a domestique, but it should be great. And of course the Tour of Catalunya starts about a week after that, so a busy month.
