IKEA-Bianchi - Tour Down Under
Christer
I am not complaining about you putting in 85 in STA on Christer Terjesen, but I think that's a little high. This looks good so far. When it comes to races, I would really like going for the gold in Norwegian national championships (if it's in) and Post Danmark Rundt (Tour of Denmark). Other than that, I will do whatever the team needs me to do. Smile

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Our goal for today will be to get Lachlan Saunders the win, from previous experience the breakaway is the way to go. Greg Bailey will try for the break just in case they get away, Saunders may get over Goss and it will be close with Haussler should it come to a bunch sprint.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0035.png

Fitted with Bianchi Oltre frames, Shimano C-50 wheels and Giro Ionos helmets the boys looked sharp as they all will throughout the whole season.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0036-1.png

With 133km to go two breakaway groups join together and have a 2 and a half minute gap, riders in here were Mcewen (Shack), A.Davis (Astana), Rensahw, (HTC), Hayman (Sky) and IKEA's own Greg Bailey. Due to the high calibre it looks unlikely Bailey will win if this break makes it, luckily we have Saunders in the pack doing no work.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0038.png

With 100km to go the breakaway has 4mins and no real chase from the pack on this dangerous group. Could these guys stay away?

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0039.png

After Michael Matthews made a solo break and rode across to the break Garmin have decided to start a bit of a chase for their man Haussler. The gap is hovering around 5mins and if anything coming down slightly with just 55km's to go.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0040.png

With 20km to go there is 3 groups on the road. The original break, 1min behind them is Simon Gerrans (sky) and Stuart O'Grady (leopard), and a further 1min40 back is the peleton. This one is going down to the wire!

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0041.png

On the outskirts of town Greg Bailey has gone for it alone! This is a crucial move.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0042.png

It's between the breakaway riders of the day now. Bailey does have a minute advantage with 9km left but this group can close in, will he survive up the hill or not?

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0043.png

Yep, thats right, this photo i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0044.png(sent in from a fan) shows that in their first ever race IKEA-Bianchi have won! It's Greg Bailey who crosses the line first with a gap of 27 seconds to Michael Matthews in second, 43 seconds to the chasing breakaway riders led over by Mark Renshaw and the peloton a further 2mins down.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0045.png

The sponsors will be happy with this photo on the back page of every newspaper in Australia. Maybe it will encourage people to go out and buy DIY shelves and cupboards.

INTERVIEW WITH GREG BAILEY
Matt Keenan (Aussie cycling reporter): Greg, wow! This is your first race with team IKEA-Bianchi, how did the ride go?

GB: Well Matt, I was instructed by my DS to get in the breakaway in case they survived, as you probably saw I didn't do much work as I didn't fancy my chances against blokes like Mcewen and Allan Davis. I felt strong on every hill today so I went for it just before the last climb and luckily JUST had enough energy to hold on to my lead.

MK: Will we see you at the Tour Down Under in your new jersey?

GB: Yeah, I think you will, with it being our home race I think both Lachie (Saunders) and I will be there.

MK: The rest of your team is enjoying the sun in Monaco, would you rather be there or here in chilly Melbourne?

GB: Definitely here Matt. I'm only 18 and I did leave the country 2 years ago to train more but I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be right now. Plus DS Oscar Richards is a pretty tough bloke I don't think the boys will be enjoying their time in Monaco.

MK: Haha, alright Greg, thanks and once again congratulations on your first professional win and hopefully more come your way.

Yeah, I choose the team name after looking through the jerseys and picking IKEA as the best one Smile

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS ITT
NOTE- I have no Bianchi TT bike in the db i use so i will use the Giant chrono.

Today's objective is just ride and gain form. Not even joking. With Evans, Porte and Roegrs we have no hope even if Greg Bailey is reasonably good at timetrialing but with the DS's appalling TT coaching skill Greg may struggle. A top 10 would be nice. Saunders is expected to do nothing unfortunately.

We have literally no goal for Lachlan today but he rides anyway. Here he is in full stride.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0046.png

Unfortunately Lachlan had the great timetrailist Jack Bobridge starting behind him which meant he got caught with about 3km's left.
i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0047.png

Saunders crosses the finsh line provisionally in 13th place. He would later finish in 37th.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0048.png

But now it's road race champion Bailey's chance!

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0050.png

Greg crosses the line and he won't do the double, he is in 4th for now but will finish as 10th.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0051.png

And the winner is Cadel Evans from BMC by a mere second over Richie Porte (SaxoBank).

That's some quality racing by the two Aussies, right there. Good tactics, too. Looking forward to the next races.

Ah well, not a good TTSad
But at least we have the National Road Race Champion in Greg Bailey

First stage of the Tour Down Under! Today we will look for a top 5 result with strong sprinter Mike Pye. This goal is very achievable and maybe we can podium or win but we will set realistic goals to start with.

The team consists of i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0060.png

The big American James Hawksea got in the breakaway for IKEA-Bianchi today, along with Ian Stannard (sky), Viviani (Liquigas) and Eldridge from Team Type 1. James decided to go for the BOTD so we didn't have to chase all day to bring Pye to the finish. With 68km left they have a 4'27" advantage.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0055.png

Past the finish line for the first time and it's BMC strangely who decided to chase, with no sprinter they are setting up for Ballan or Kroon to attack late? They have decreased the gap to 4mins now and it looks safe the break will be caught.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0056.png

This picture was captured from a camera we put in Jakab Zoltan's sunglasses, we can clearly see with 3km to go Mike Pye on the wheel of Tyler Farrar who is getting led out by Julian Dean.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0057.png

Boy was it close on the line! Breschel just pips Mike Pye to the black stripe, 5 more metres and Pye would have won. That's cycling for you though, you win some, you lose some.

A very successful day for IKEA-Bianchi! Pye will certainly aim for the win in every other bunch sprint this race. Next stage is another easy, flat one.

Stage 2 is all flat. We will look to stay safe in the peloton and win with Mike Pye in the end.

A group of 14 with no notable names got away and built up of lead of 5'30" with 90km left.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0061.png

The gap was getting too large for our liking so we chose to drive the peloton for a bit.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0062.png

Sepp Forcher, James Hawksea and Ruben van Weerd did an incredible amount of work pulling the large breakaway back.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0063.png

Attack! A late move by Leif Hoste and Simon Spilak will cause some controversy, the break away is still a fair way up the road. Will they take the win?

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0064.png

And it's Tomas Vaitkus (Astana) who beats his breakaway companions today.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0065.png

A bit of a mix up in the chase meant the breakaway lasted by 50 seconds and unfortunately Mike Pye tired and faded out to finish a dissapointing 27th.

A poor day from the perspective of an IKEA-Bianchi fan. Tomorrow is rated as 'hilly' but should end up in a sprint. If it doesn't maybe Jakab Zoltan can do something.

@all Thanks on the kind words, I have enjoyed the first few stages and can't wait to get in to the big races like the cobbled classics and grand tours.

@sutty68 yeah that was intense! i was on the edge of my seat because it goes into slow mo and Pye had the speed but ran out of distance as I said in the report

cavfan8
Stage 3 is the only 'hilly' rated stage but it's not particularly hard. Two options here which are the sprint with Mike Pye and work for hills specialist Jakab Zoltan. To avoid chasing we will look to send someone in the breakaway.

After many attempts a breakaway finally get away. Blanco (Geox), Saunders (IKEA), Klemme (Leopard), Malacarne (Quickstep) and Costa (Movistar) have a gap of 3min with 57km left. Saunders has the ability to win from this group so he will work extra hard. Astana now begin the chase, the breakaway is looking more and more unlikely by the second.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0002-1.png

Saunders attacks from the breakaway, the move looked inevitable but a slight shock to see the Aussie make the move first, maybe a repeat of Greg Bailey's efforts in the national championships?

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0003-1.png

Saunders starts the sprint with 1km to go and behind him it's a mess. Horner, Zoltan and Ballan attacked and caught the breakaway riders but everyone is pretty much together now apart from a few who have been dropped off the back. T.Vaitkus is in the peloton and shouldn't lose his lead today.

i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff469/George_ODonovan/PCM0004-1.png

And it's a win for IKEA-Bianchi! But even more importantly Lachlan Saunders has taken a stage win in his home tour! Jakab Zoltan sweetens the win with second place 22 seconds behind. Zoltan will jump to 10th on GC.

An amazing day for the Swedish team IKEA-Bianchi. A 1-2 was more than we could have hoped for. Zoltan moves into 10th on GC which is promising, Willunga Hill will decide where he ultimately finishes. The sponsor have to be happy with our Australian trip so far.

NOTE- My internet is being a b***h and going really slow, think I hit my download limit woops! I might write reports on word and upload next week when my internet improves or might take a break, dont worry though, I am doing this story and you may (or may not) have a blog from a team rider up soon Wink Thanks for reading guys!

Thinktank
Wow, nice 1-2! How about a Top 10 GC with Saunders? Is that out of reach? And too, may i ask you when Sepp has his greatest form this year?
And don't worry about the Internet-thing...all good things need their time to get even better and as long as you win, noone complains about waiting a day more or not anywayGrin
