Petronas - Monster Energy; The end of an era
dienblad
2nd stage is from Montfort L'Amaury to Amilly, 199 km, no KOTM.
img109.imageshack.us/img109/1619/stage2x.jpg

Because of a crashing game 2 times, I only have 1 screenshot, luckily I could play it, not simulate.

Of course, there was a breakaway, but it ended in a mass sprint. And Thor Hushovd shows that the curse of the rainbow jersey isn't ment to be for him: he takes the win in the mass sprint. 2nd is Denis Galimzyanov (Kathusha), 3rd Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis). Peter Sagan took 13th place.
Well, I don't wanna complain, but....... I tried to let Sagan take the backwheel of Hushovd, Cavendish or Greipel, but failed every time. I also set up a train with De Maar-De Gendt-Keukeleire-Kittel, but although on dot 95 with more than half of the green bar left, De Maar, got stuck behind one of the breakaways and the entire train fell back to the last part of the peloton...

Stage 3: From Cosne-cours-sur-Loire to Nuit-Saint-Georges, 202km with the 2nd categorized Cote de Bécoup 23 km before the finishline.
img64.imageshack.us/img64/9072/stage3y.jpg

A breakaway takes over 7 minutes. IS 1 is won by Liquigas' A. Marangui, in front of Lars Boom (Rabbank) and D. Vigano (Leopard).
img13.imageshack.us/img13/8547/1is1.jpg

Lars Boom wins the 2nd sprint, Leukemans (VCD) on 2, and Marangui on 3.
img843.imageshack.us/img843/4815/2is2.jpg

One important person has to let the peloton go: Richie Porte, the leader from the Saxobak team! His form must be terrible!
img847.imageshack.us/img847/4958/3porte.jpg

At the summit of the Cote de Bécoup, Alessandro Ballan rides alone in the lead.
img841.imageshack.us/img841/5117/4kotm.jpg

The peloton is in many pieces and over 3'30 back. Except Porte, also riders like Mark cavendish, Tony Martin, Christophe Kern, Laurent Didier and André Greipel are being dropped.
img819.imageshack.us/img819/4089/5peloton.jpg

Alessandro Ballan manage to stay in front, without losing any time in the 25km long descent. What a terrific effort by the former World champ!
img268.imageshack.us/img268/9066/6finish.jpg

Björn Leukemans takes home the 2nd place for Vacansoleil.
img830.imageshack.us/img830/6672/72ef.jpg

Lars Boom manages to finish right before the peloton. The strangest thing is that the peloton hasn't won a single second in the last 25 kilometres. Is it an epic stage by Ballan, or........?????????
img856.imageshack.us/img856/4283/83eenderest.jpg

Well, of course Ballan take sthe yellow jersey!
img10.imageshack.us/img10/1184/9geel.jpg

I forgot to export the results. From the Monster-team, Sagan, Kittel, De Gendt and Poels finished in the 1st peloton, the others lost a amount of time.

Tomorrow (in real life, don't know if I have the time for it in the game) the 3rd stage. Poels wants to conquer the mountain jersey, which he lost against Ballan today (tied points).

Stage 4: From Creches-sur-Saone to Belleville, 191 heavy kilometres with 3 2nd category climbs and 4 3rd category climbs. The last 35km are on slightly ascending roads.
img842.imageshack.us/img842/5406/stage4j.jpg

Today's tactic is to get Wout Poels in a breakaway, so he can take home a lot of KOTM-points. When the group is together after the last climb, Sagan should have some energy left for maybe the stage win in a sprint.

Wout Poels takes home the most points of today's first mountain sprint (Col de Grand Vent, 2nd, 599m). Euskaltel's Egoi Martinéz looks like having the same idea as Poels and takes 2nd, 3rd being Movistar's Gutiérrez.
img24.imageshack.us/img24/6731/1kotm1.jpg

Because of the high pace of the Movistar-team everyone gets together again. Martinez wins the 2nd KOTM of the day (Cote de Propieres, 3rd, 660m), in front of Michel Albasini (HTC) and Poels.
img545.imageshack.us/img545/4319/2kotm2.jpg

With the 3rd KOTM-sprint (Col des Escorbans, 853m), the riders reach the highest altitude of today. Again, Martinez wins in front of Albasini and Poels.
img821.imageshack.us/img821/9527/3kotm3.jpg

Again, Movistar brings the peloton back because of it's high pace. SO, a big group can sprint for the 1st Intermediate Sprint. Samuel Dumoulin wins it, with Alan Davis and Thor Hushovd on 2 and 3.
img27.imageshack.us/img27/8458/4is1.jpg

Then Kevin Seeldraeyers (Quick Step) attacks. The young Belgian rider is the first to reach the summit of the Col du Joncin (2nd, 699m). More then a minute behind him, Martinez comes up in 2nd, in front of Albasini and Poels.
img62.imageshack.us/img62/2177/5kotm4.jpg

And what we feared happened. Suddenly, no team wants to chase Seeldraeyers, and everybody starts attacking. Poels has given to much and has no energy left to counterattack. Seeldreayers stays up front alone and wins the 6th KOTM-sprint (forget that there was a number 5, so no results and ss of that one), Mikel Nieve (Euskaltel) is 2nd, and Cyril Gautier (Europcar) as 3rd (Col du fut D'Avenas, 739m).
img94.imageshack.us/img94/9930/6kotm5.jpg

Of course, Seeldraeyers is the first one at KOTM-sprint 7 (Col de Fontmartin, 3rd, 663m). Nick Nuyens (Saxobank) and Ruben Plaza (Movistar) are 2 minutes back, the peloton is 5'12 back, and again a breakaway will succeed in this Paris - Nice.
img215.imageshack.us/img215/5900/7peloton.jpg

Nuyens and Plaza gain ground in the descent and close the gap to Seeldraeyers. At the last Intermediate Sprint, 15km before the finish, the gap has decreased to 20 seconds. The peloton is 3'50 back.
img89.imageshack.us/img89/4354/8is2.jpg

The three come together and settle for a sprint in Belleville. Then a shock in the peloton: GC-favourite Roman Kreuziger has crashed, together with Rein Taaramäe and Yuri Trofimov.
img855.imageshack.us/img855/6429/9val.jpg

Which one of the three upfront will win the sprint? Seeldraeyers has been solo for a long time, Nuyens has done the most work in the chase, so it is the wheelsucking Ruben Plaza who takes home the victory. Well, the tactic of Movistar of chasing everyone in the beginning of the race has turned out great for them. Nuyens finishes 2nd, an exhausted Seeldraeyers as 3rd.
img807.imageshack.us/img807/7421/10finish.jpg

2 minutes and 2 seconds later, the peloton crosses the line. Sagan finishes in 10th place.

The GC will probably shaken up in tomorrow's stage, with the summit of the Col de la Mure 9km before the finish line. Can Ballan hold on? From the top 10, Sagan is the best climber, but there are 30 riders in the same time, and some of them are real contenders: Andreas Klöden, Marzio Bruseghin, Jakob Fuglsang, Bradley Wiggins, Christophe Le Mével, Ryder Hesjedal, Thomas Löfkvist and good-old Chris Horner.

Stage 4 from Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise to Vervoux-en-Vivarais, 193km with again a lot of climbing: 4 times 3rd category, 1 of the 2nd category and two 1st category climbs, the Col de la Croix de Chabauret, alt. 1201m after 54km and the Col de la Mure, alt. 765m with the summit only 9 km before the finish.
img62.imageshack.us/img62/3097/stage5d.jpg

Of course, Wout Poels try to get in a break with the goal of collecting KOTM-points. He reaches the first climb in 2nd position behind Cyril Gautier (Europcar).
img228.imageshack.us/img228/6731/1kotm1.jpg

The peloton, again led by Movistar, catches them in the descent. This gives Peter Sagan the oppurtinity of winning 3 seconds in the first Intermediate sprint.
img836.imageshack.us/img836/5144/2is1.jpg

Close to the summit of this tour's highest point, the Col de la Croix de Chabauret, Poels tries to escapes again. Albasini (HTC) is the first to reach the summit, in front of Poels and Gautier.
img850.imageshack.us/img850/2397/3kotm2.jpg

And as expected, Movistar brings it all together. Then Gautier jumps away and reaches the 3rd KOTM as the leader. Poels tries to follow, but hasn't got the legs anymore.
img808.imageshack.us/img808/4249/4kotm3.jpg

Than we make a jump in the stage of 70km. Gautier stays up front, wins 3 KOTM-sprints, and the IS, and starts the ascent of the Col de la Mure with 3 minutes advantage of the peloton.
The Monster-riders keep the pace up high, but early in the climb, Daniel Moreno (Kathusha) is the first one to attack.
img841.imageshack.us/img841/8260/5moreno.jpg

Thomas De Gendt accelerates and closes the gap. Only Radioshack's Chris Hrner can follow the 2.
img64.imageshack.us/img64/8627/6degendtenhorner.jpg

Gautier still leads at the summit, and ensures himself of the KOTM-jersey.
img143.imageshack.us/img143/4527/7kotm7.jpg

1'21 behind, De Gendt, Horner and Moreno reach the summit.
img832.imageshack.us/img832/9846/8achtevolgers.jpg

A 6-man group is 2'25 back: Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin), Thomas Löfkvist (Sky), Marzio Bruseghin (Movistar), Leandro Bertagnolli and Simon Spilak (Lampre) and Peter Sagan (Monster).
img84.imageshack.us/img84/9040/9groep3.jpg

Gautier succeeds in defending his leads, although he loses 27 seconds in the last 9km. What a great ride by the young French rider!
img31.imageshack.us/img31/2322/10gautier.jpg

Horner wins the sprint for place 2, while De Gendt gets a fantastic 3rd place, just in front of Moreno.
img828.imageshack.us/img828/5924/11horner.jpg

Hesjedal finishes in 4th place 2'08 back, together with Bruseghin and Löfkvist. Bertagnolli and Spilak finish in front of Sagan 2'21 behind Gautier.

GC:
Ballan stays in the yellow jersey, but Horner is only 31 seconds back in 2nd place. De Gendt is in 3rd place, 33 seconds behind Ballan. Sagan is in 8th place, 2 minutes behind Ballan.

Gautier wears the KOTM-jersey with 43 points. Poels is in 2nd with 27 points, Seeldraeyers in 3rd with 22.

Tomorrow is the ITT to Aix-en-Provence. Thomas de Gendt will take a sht at the yellow jersey. He should be able to close the gap to Ballan, but we think Horner is the storngest opponent.

Stage 6 is a 27km hilly-ITT from Rognes to Aix-en-Provence.
img843.imageshack.us/img843/4582/stage6.jpg

The first to set a good time is German's Tony Martin: 38'15.
img833.imageshack.us/img833/8929/1martin.jpg

Jack Bobridge comes close to the German champ, but is 17 seconds short.
img580.imageshack.us/img580/3021/3bobridge.jpg

Then Roman Kreuziger crushes the time of Martin. He has recovered very well from his crash in an earlier stage and completes the ITT in a great time of 37'56!
img696.imageshack.us/img696/7707/4kreuziger.jpg

GC number 10 Marzio Bruseghin can't beat Kreuziger and finishes 11 seconds behind.
img683.imageshack.us/img683/1816/6bruseghin.jpg

Peter Sagan starts a little bit slow, but rides an astonishing 2nd part and is even one second faster then Kreuziger: new best time, 37'55!
img202.imageshack.us/img202/5430/7sagan.jpg

Then comes the top 5 of the GC. Yesterday's winner Cyril Gautier loses time, 1'24 behind.
img692.imageshack.us/img692/9813/8gautier.jpg

Daniel Moreno is one second faster than Gautier, but 1'23 behind Sagan.
img827.imageshack.us/img827/1525/9moreno.jpg

Thomas de Gendt is on a mission to conquer the yellow jersey. He finishes in a time of 38'12, the 4th time so far.
img200.imageshack.us/img200/1483/10degendt.jpg

But Chris Horner was already fast halfway, and keeps up the pace to the wire. Fastest time in 37'53, 2 seconds faster than Sagan.
img38.imageshack.us/img38/5924/11horner.jpg

Alessandro Ballan needs a time of 38'23 to stay in the lead, but doesn't make it: 38'44.
img546.imageshack.us/img546/858/12ballan.jpg

So Chris Horner wins the ITT, just 2 seconds faster than an incredible Peter Sagan. Thomas de Gendt takes the 5th place.

So, a good day at the office for us. With Sagan in 2nd and De Gendt in 5th, the stage results are fantastic. And De Gendt moves up to 2nd in the GC. The gap of 19 seconds to Horner isn't too big, a lot can happen in the last 2 stages. Tomorrow's stage is very hille again, and the last 6km has an average ascent of 6%. That shouls suit De Gendt better than Horner. We'll see!

Nice results. Hope De Gendt can take some time on Horner

The 7th and penultimate stage, 215 very hilly / mountainous km from Brognoles to Biot.
img833.imageshack.us/img833/4199/stage7.jpg

1 3rd category climb, 2 2nd category climbs and in the middle of the stage 2 1st category climbs, including the Col du Ferrier with it's summit at 1041m, the highest point in this stage. The last km is very difficult, with an average gradient of 6%.
img822.imageshack.us/img822/6656/stage7laatstekm.jpg

The goal in this (and the following) is very clear: gain more than 19 seconds of Horner.
The team makes sure the peloton is together before the first IS1. Then, with 180km to go Thomas de Gendt breaks away and takes the first place in the IS. And more important: 3 seconds!
img710.imageshack.us/img710/8547/1is1.jpg

Approaching the mountains, Wout Poels goes in another attack. And surprisingly, he can get away! He rides together with Richie Porte (SBS), Addy Engels (QSt), and Ruslan Podgorniy (VCD) and crosses the line of the 1st and 2nd KOTM in first place.
img200.imageshack.us/img200/4526/2kotm12.jpg

Poels is also the first in the summit of the Cote de Cabris, 1st category. The breakaway is joined by Christophe Le Mével (Gar), Christophe Kern (Eur), Sylwester Szmyd (Liq) and Michael Albasini (HTC).
img651.imageshack.us/img651/9527/3kotm3.jpg

At the summit of the Col du Ferrier, with 100km to go, the BOTD has an advantage of over 10 minutes. Poels gets tired already and decides not the sprint for the points. Kern is the first on the summit. The same at the summit of the last KOTM of the day.
img189.imageshack.us/img189/2788/4kotm4.jpg

With 20kilometres to go, Kern decides to jump away. He has the best legs of the BOTD and no one can follow him. Will it be enough to take over the lead in the GC? He's 4'50 back in the GC, and his lead is still over 5 minutes!
img215.imageshack.us/img215/5747/7kern.jpg

Then a surprise in the peloton. Roman Kreuziger has jumped away, but Chris Horner goes in the counter attack. With 13km to the finish, can he make a difference?
img202.imageshack.us/img202/9996/6horner.jpg

The answer is no. Thanks to a fantastic Peter Sagan, Horner is taken in. This is a sign for Thoma de Gendt to try it. It's only 3 km to go, and he creates a gap of 15 seconds.
img812.imageshack.us/img812/6530/8degendt.jpg

Meanwhile, Christophe Kern brings it home, and takes the win in a outstanding race! Le Mével and Szmyd finish in 2nd and 3rd with one minute back. Wout Poels ends the stage in a great 5th place at 2'07. But it's not enough for the yellow jersey...
img26.imageshack.us/img26/5584/9kern.jpg

The effort of De Gendt gaining time was fruitless. He got passed in the last metres and finished in 12th. The best uphill sprinter in the peloton was......... Chris Horner. How can a guy with only 59 in sprints, beats guys like Hesjedal, Trofimov, Moreno, Tony Martin and De Gendt in a (uphill) sprint?????

3 Chris Horner Team RadioShack 13 60
4 Samuel Dumoulin Cofidis, le crédit en ligne 0 52
5 Thomas De Gendt MONSTER ENERGY - FORD 12 48

Looking back, De Gendt has brought back the time gap from 19 to 16 seconds. With the traditional final stage to Nice, over La Turbie and the Col D'Eze, everything is still possible. Even Kern and Ballan are still in the race for the victory.
Wout Poels is in the lead for the KOTM-jersey, and will get a free roll to bring the polka dot jersey home.

Oops, forgot to take screens...... So you have to do with the story and the results.

First of all, we succeeded in our first goal: the mountain jersey. Wout Poels took a few points, although he didn't get in the BOTD. So it's the KOTM-jersey for us!!

Then the race for the GC: Disaster struck for the team: with everything in control (Sagan, De Gendt, Poels, Bobridge, De Maar and Didier in a 30 man lead group), there was a crash in the descent of the Col de La Turbie. Albasini and Wiggins crashed, and De Gendt couldn't avoid them...... Every rider in the team, except Sagan, followed their orders and waited for him. They drove like hell, but couldn't get De Gendt back in the lead group.
A 5-man group got away from the others and started the sprint for the stage win. Chris Horner was in it, and he knew he would win the GC. Luckily for us, Peter Sagan was also in it. He took the wheel of Roman Kreuziger and blasted the others away!!
Sagan got a fantastic victory, ahead of Jens Voigt, Kreuziger, Horner and Egoi Martinez. Because of the victory, Sagan improved to the 3rd place in the GC. De Gendt finished in 37th place, 1'48 behind and got dropped to the 5th place in the GC.

Looking back, we can say that this was an extremely succesful Paris - Nice for our team. We won all jersey (points for Sagan, KOTM for Poels, U25 for Sagan and teams) except one: the GC.
Was it only the bad luck of the crash, or would otherwise Horner be too strong? We'll never know. WIth Sagan in 3rd with a stage win, and De Gendt with a 5th place in the GC, we only can be very happy. And of course all credits to Chris Horner!

Our team:

The route:
img846.imageshack.us/img846/3118/2parkours.jpg

Because we don't feel like chasing a breakaway, we decide to be in it. Lieuwe Westra is the one, together with Zabriskie (Garmin), Oostlander (De Rijke), Bercz (Indeland) and Dupont (Jong Vlaanderen). They get a max. lead of 6 minutes.
img850.imageshack.us/img850/7138/3botd.jpg

With 30km to go, the lead is only 1'50, so Westra decides to go for it on his own. With one lap to go, 15km, the lead is 1'36.
img690.imageshack.us/img690/6320/4westra.jpg

It looks like he's gonna make it, but 750 metres before the finish, he's caught.
img577.imageshack.us/img577/2002/51km.jpg

Leonardo Duque (Cofidis) and Nico Eeckhout (An Post) are in front, but then comes Jens Keukeleire with an amazing jump. And he takes the win!

Well, no more updates the next day. Tomorrow I'm going for a bike ride myself, the tour edition of the Dutch Food Valley Classic, 100km with about 500 height metres in the middle of Holland. And after that, a BBQ!

So I'll be back in a few days (I hope Sunday)

Well, you cant win in a tour run (I don't exactly know the English word for it, a challenge ride?).
But it was fun and exhausting. The hilly part almost killed me but 105km with about 27km/hour average ain't that bad Smile

La Primavera!
img198.imageshack.us/img198/8812/milansanremologo.jpg

Almost 300km from Milan to San Remo. The longest classic there is, with a long, long race to the hills.
img839.imageshack.us/img839/5213/routem.jpg

First Le Manie, then the tri Capi, the Cipressa and a few km befor the finish line it's the Poggio, with it's technical descent.
img543.imageshack.us/img543/5430/hoogte.jpg

Although the final of the race is difficult, it mostly ends in a mass sprint, with last year Oscar Freire who took his 3rd win in Milan-San Remo.

Our team:
img641.imageshack.us/img641/6623/1teamq.jpg

Favourites:
***: Oscar Freire, Thor Hushovd, Mark Cavendish
**: Filippo Pozzato, Phillipe Gilbert, Alessandro Ballan
*: Peter Sagan, Alessandro Petacchi, Tyler Farrar

As every year, there is a BOTD who gets about 10 minutes at the top of the Turchino.
I. Rovny (Radioshack), J. Herrada (Movistar), T. Dall'Antonia (Liquigas) and the Quickstep duo D. Malacarne & N. Maes.
img580.imageshack.us/img580/1017/2botd.jpg

With 42km to go, the first attack in the peloton is from the Garmin-Cervélo duo Heinrich Haussler and Thor Hushovd. The BOTD is still 2'30 minutes up front.
img6.imageshack.us/img6/7987/4hausslerenhushovd.jpg

But the attack is fruitless. The next riders are Fabian Cancellara and Alessandro Ballan. 34km to go, only one minute behind the remaining escapee Tiziano Dall'Antonia.
img52.imageshack.us/img52/9756/5ballanencancellara.jpg

They get a gap of almost a minute over the Cipressa. But in the descend and the flat part towards the Poggio, 17 riders come back. In it are Peter Sagan, Marcel Kittel and Thomas de Gendt. Surprisingly, the winner of 2010 Oscar Freire isn't in it,just like Petacchi, Farrar, Cunego and Boasson Hagen.
img27.imageshack.us/img27/363/6voetpoggio.jpg

Strangely, no one attacks at the Poggio (3 have to let the group go), so we expect a sprint of 16 towards the finish.
img812.imageshack.us/img812/2739/7toppoggio.jpg

De Gendt and Kittel try to set up a train for Sagan, but all 3 are exhausted. The distance and the toughness of the race have been too much for them. It's Filippo Pozzato who has the most energy left. He wins the sprint just in front of Philippe Gilbert and Thor Hushovd. Sagan finishes in 7th, and Kittel completes the top 10.

Looking back, I'm satisfied with having 3 man in the lead group. Although they were exhausted after the Poggio, and couldn't take part in the win, the team effort was great!

201km with a lot of climbs that are also in the most important Belgian cobbled classic, the Ronde van Vlaanderen, such as Valkenberg, Oude Kwaremont and Patersberg.
Last year's edition was won by Danish Matti Breschel.
img832.imageshack.us/img832/2773/2010breschel.jpgCan he win again, after his transfer to Rabobank. The competition is huge: Cancellara, Hushovd, Hincapie, etc.

Our team:
img51.imageshack.us/img51/2632/1ploeg.jpg
Our goal is to get in the top 10. The competition is very strong and our riders aren't in the best shape (Terpstra has the highest form with 89), but a top 10 must be possible.

After an early break had formed, Marcus Burghardt (BMC) jumped to them when the hills started, about 100km to go. After the Valkenberg, with 70km to go he was alone up front. With 50km to go, at the Steenbeekdries, his lead was over 5 minutes at the peloton.
img850.imageshack.us/img850/4145/2burghardt.jpg

In between was the Landbouwkrediet-duo Koen Barbé and Frédéric Amorison, with 1'30 back.
img6.imageshack.us/img6/5718/3landbouwkrediet.jpg

After the Oude Kwaremont and the Patersberg, a group of 17 riders is in the chase of Burghardt (who still has a lead of 3'45), and only Sebastien Rosseler is in it! Terpstra, Maaskant en Vanmarcke just couldn't follow at those 2 steep cobbled climbs.
img833.imageshack.us/img833/9116/430km.jpg

With 22km to go, Matti Breschel (Rabobank) attacks out of the chasing group, but is still 3'12 back.
img696.imageshack.us/img696/3919/5breschel.jpg

When he reaches Barbé and Amorison with 19km to go he's got company from George Hincapie (BMC) and Johan van Summeren (Garmin). The leas is cut back to 2'30.
img7.imageshack.us/img7/9251/6achtervolgers.jpg

But they can't catch Burghardt. The German rider can celebrate an excellent effort!
img94.imageshack.us/img94/8417/7finishu.jpg

Breschel follows at 48 seconds.
img716.imageshack.us/img716/2451/82er.jpg

Rosseler is our best placed rider, position 17.
