Tour of Qatar Stage 6
Sealine Beach Resort - Doha Corniche
Snazzy jpeg^
Favourites: Contador, Schleck..no just joking. Farrar, Bennati, Petacchi
Final stage, can we actually achieve something in this tour?
Kittel sitting next to Farrar in the white jersey, which he was aiming to take home.
The BOTD included 13 riders, one of which was again Alex Dowsett and for a while it looked good to make it to the end.
Sprint Results
Spoiler 1st Aldo Ino Ilesic (Type 1)
2nd Vidal Celis (Endura Racing)
3rd Iñaki Isasi (Euskaltel)
Spoiler 1st Aldo Ino Ilesic (Type 1)
2nd Iñaki Isasi (Euskaltel)
3rd David Hesselbarth (NetApp)
However, as usual Garmin set a ferocious pace and the break got reeled back in, but Dowsett wasn't finished. He and Stijn Vandenbergh gave it one last go and they held on for 10km before falling back into the peloton.
As the sprint got underway, Haussler was unbelievable and his leadout destroyed the peloton leaving Farrar and Hushovd almost alone to take a Garmin 1-2 but Bennati also finished strongly to take 3rd. Our best finisher was again Cancellara although Thomas was right with him. It goes without saying that Kittel lost Thomas' wheel. Back to leadout training for Marcel!

Farrar was simply unbeatable here with Garmin bringing pretty much their strongest team for flat stages. Kittel started well but was a huge disappointment at the end and he will have to improve if he wants to earn a place at the big races this season. Fabian took 5th and Terpstra appeared from nowhere to get 8th.
Farrar unsurprisingly won the points rankings aswell. Kittel was 12th
However, Kittel did take home the white jersey, with Dowsett 5th and Granqvist a solid 10th.
All in all a pretty disappointing tour in terms of results, but we didn't come here with any real goals other than to build fitness and get in as many breaks as possible. Now we're off to Oman. See you there.

Meanwhile back in Europe, our eight man team for the Vuelta Ciclista a Andalucia has been announced. The tour has a prologue, a medium mountain stage and a hilly stage as well as two flat stages. Therefore the squad is quite balanced even though we are not taking a sprinter. We are hoping for a good performance from Luis Leon Sanchez, although, as this is his first race of the season his fitness is very low. His main support will come from Kennaugh. Check the full squad below:
Spoiler Luis Leon Sanchez ESP
Ruben Chumillas ESP
Dan Fleeman GBR
Peter Kennaugh GBR
Dan Lloyd GBR
Alfonso Montanaro ITA
Alexander Muhr SUI
Calvin Sandell NZL
Good Luck to all the lads taking part there.

I like your story very much! Keep it up! (And make Geraint win something)

Thanks. And don't worry, he will. He had the yellow jersey in Le Tour for 10 days last year. It was like Voeckler this year. He just kept battling, it was quite emotional when he eventually got dropped at the very top of the Tourmalet.

can you please post team's sky roster? It seems they lost a lot of riders to your team.

Yeah, I kind of raped their team of all the Brits
Here you go, sorted by average attribute. Obviously they've made quite a few signings.

Another 6-stage race held in the Middle East and it starts out the same as the Tour of Qatar, but, shock, horror, it has actual hills in it. Infact, one fairly big climb up the Green Mountain on Stage 4 and a hilly TT on Stage 5.
Because of this, quite a few GC contenders use this as a warm up for the early season races like Paris-Nice. This year Contador himself is in Oman to prepare. We have Brad Wiggins starting his season here and of course those guys who have already done some racing will have a better chance than Brad but he should perform well. Cancellara is also here to try to win the time trial, while Boasson Hagen will make his debut as our sprinter.

Tour of Oman Stage 1
Al Sawadi - Al Seeb
Favourites: Farrar, Goss, Appollonio
After five flat stages in a row in Qatar, I would love to class that rise in the middle a hill but, no, this is flat. It's difficult to see anyone derailing the Garmin leadout that performed so well in Qatar but we'll see where Eddy the Boss stands at the moment. Not expecting much today.
The BOTD consisted of 13 riders of whom the highest profile was probably Reimer. Here they are at the first intermediate sprint.
Spoiler 1st Andrew Pinfold (UnitedHealthCare)
2nd Tomas Buchácek (Psk Whirlpool)
3rd Martin Reimer (NetApp)
Here, the second intermediate sprint.
Spoiler 1st Stuart Shaw (Drapac)
2nd Ryan Eastman (Trek)
3rd Alan Pérez (Euskaltel)
With 45km to go Rast (Radioshack) attacked out of the peloton and set about trying to bridge the gap to the men ahead.
A few kms later he was followed by Flecha (Sky) and they eventually made it to the break and continued to attack until the very end. But with no success.
As the RAIN started to fall, the inevitable pile up occurred. It involved eight riders and the main casualties were Richie Porte (Saxo Bank) and Spidertech's leader Markus Eibegger.
As the sprint began Eddy wasn't in the best position but he was very fast and made up a lot of ground. But the winner was....yeah, it was that American guy. AGAIN. It's getting a bit boring but he's clearly in very good form. The closest guy this time was unsurprisingly Goss. Eddy got 4th (far right in the Norwegian champion's jersey).

I will pay good money to the person that stops Farrar, even if it's Contador.

Tour of Oman Stage 2
The Wave, Muscat - Al Wutayya
Favourites: Farrar, Goss, Sutton
Can anybody stop Farrar and Garmin?
Again, a big break went away. This time, it was 12 riders including Reimer (NetApp) again and Kuschynski (Sky). First sprint.
Spoiler 1st Filippo Savini (Farnese Vini)
2nd Olivier Clausse (An Post)
3rd Aleksandr Kuschynski (Sky Pro Cycling)
Second sprint.
Spoiler 1st Andrew Pinfold (UnitedHealthCare)
2nd Filippo Savini (Farnese Vini)
3rd René Mandri (Endura Racing)
As yesterday, Rast tried to get away near the end. This time Bodrogi (Type 1) followed. The other two riders are Pinfold and Valgren from the breakaway.
They were brought back fairly soon and in the sprint everyone was battling for Farrar's wheel. Sutton got it but nobody was quick enough. Boasson Hagen got a good leadout from Cancellara and launched his sprint from about 9th position. He zoomed past everybody but Tyler and took a very good 2nd place. Great result for the team.

As you can tell from the results, the sprinters gained 45 seconds on the peloton but that shouldn't be too much of a problem with a mountain still ahead. Eddy is 3rd and easily the best climber of the guys that gained time today.

Tour of Oman Stage 3
Sur - Sur
Favourites: Farrar, nobody else unless a miracle happens
The final flat stage before the tour gets serious, can Eddy get another good result and can Cavendish please fly over from Europe to stop Farrar winning.
Over 20 people were trying to get in to a break today so the pace was very high at the start. When it did form, it had 16 riders in it, including American youngster Amptill. Here he is leading the breakaway. This was brought back fairly soon.
First intermediate sprint:
Spoiler 1st Filippo Savini (Farnese Vini)
2nd Mark McNally (An Post)
3rd Alan Pérez (Euskaltel)
After that a second break went away with just 8 riders in including persistent attackers Flecha and Rast as well as Amptill who was having a fine day.
Second intermediate sprint:
Spoiler 1st Grégory Rast (RadioShack)
2nd Juan Antonio Flecha (Sky Pro Cycling)
3rd Thomas Palmer (Drapac)
Numerous attacks followed from Flecha, Rast and Bodrogi but obviously nothing came of them. HTC and Garmin both had really strong trains today and Farrar wasn't miles ahead of everyone at the flamme rouge. And, what's this, a miracle...
A victory for Matt Goss by half a wheel, his first win of the season. Again Eddy came from far back to pick up 3rd. Another strong performance.

Farrar's lead is cut but it will all change tomorrow anyway.
Eddy will take over a minute advantage into the mountain stage in the youth classification, and could definitely win it due to his amazing time trial ability.

Tour of Oman Stage 4
Sultan Qaboos University - Jabal al Akhdhar
Favourites: Contador, Nibali, Wiggins
After 14 flat stages in a row since the mountain stage in the Tour de Langkawi, finally something different. Brad will try his best to stay up near the front with Clentador. He has support from Froome and Ulissi, let's see what we can do.
As usual in this tour, half of the peloton seemed to want to get away from the peloton. Again it was 16 riders that broke free, the strongest of whom were Oroz (Euskaltel), Savini (Farnese Vini) and Carlstrom (Sky).
Sprint 1
Spoiler 1st Michael Valgren (Glud & Marstrand)
2nd John Martinez Montero (Colombia es Pasion)
3rd Gavin Mannion (Trek)
Once they had been brought back, 5 riders went away and formed another break. Flecha was in this break, surprise, surprise.
Sprint 2
Spoiler 1st Luca Mazzanti (Farnese Vini)
2nd Gavin Mannion (Trek)
3rd Juan Antonio Flecha (Sky Pro Cycling)
As the climb approached race leader Tyler Farrar attacked out of the peloton to try to build up a lead before the climbers destroyed him. It didn't work.
As we hit the climb it became obvious that Froome and Ulissi's poor fitness meant they couldn't help Wiggins and it was left to Boasson Hagen. Eventually though Wiggins had to do it himself. He followed Contador when he attacked but his pace was just too high and he dropped back into the second group. Contador took a comfortable win and Nieve of Euskaltel easily won the sprint behind. Wiggins was 4th behind Nibali, just missing out on vital bonus seconds. Cancellara climbed superbly and Goss put himself in a great position by climbing well also.
Spoiler 1 Alberto Contador Saxo Bank - Sungard 3h46'06

It looks like a victory for Contador but it will be interesting to see what Wiggins and Boasson Hagen can do in the time trial tomorrow. And never discount Cancellara.

Tour of Oman Stage 5
Al Jissah ITT
Favourites: Cancellara, Leipheimer, Wiggins
Can Wiggins haul himself up the GC in this time trial. Unfortunately, it's not long enough to gain the time on Contador but a podium isn't out of his grasp. And of course can Cancellara pick up his first win of the season.
Almost immediately, Amptill took to the start ramp, adjusting his earpiece. He set the quickest time when he finished. Quickest of the first five riders anyway.
Next up was Froome, here on the steep first climb. In the distance directly behind him is Ulissi. Neither would be particularly quick.
The first big favourite to hit the course was Leipheimer in his American champion's jersey. He ended the day a disappointing 14th.
Cancellara, Boasson Hagen and Wiggins were all out on the course at the same time and they all did virtually the same time up to the second time check. Here is Wiggins towards the end of the course in his national champion's jersey.
Cancellara set the quickest time and when Wiggins crossed the line 5 seconds down, it looked like he had won. But Contador had been on the beef again and destroyed Fabian's time, clinching an unbelievably comfortable overall victory barring accidents on the final stage. Here he is, almost catching Matty Goss.

A bit of a fail for the team, getting 2nd, 3rd and 4th, but Wiggins looks like he has achieved the goal of a podium place. With a good sprint on the final stage Eddy can move up to 5th, and if he were to win the stage, the bonus seconds would move him up to 4th. He has also secured the white jersey comfortably.

Tour of Oman Stage 6
Qurayyat - Mattrah Seafront
Favourites: Farrar, Goss, Boasson Hagen
Final stage, can Eddy get a win to move up to 4th on the GC?
As we hit the steep climb at the start, Swedish wonderkid Granqvist went on the attack, pulling out 1:30 on everybody else. He was going so well that in the end he had to sit up and wait for the rest of the breakaway rather than actually be caught.
In total, there were 13 men in the breakaway. Their maximium advantage was 7 minutes, but it was pulled back very quickly.
The break was caught with 15km to go, giving everybody loads of time to form their sprint trains. Because it was the last stage, we gave it absolutely everything with Wiggins pulling the train along aswell. Just as the sprint started though, we got boxed in by HTC's train and as Renshaw pulled off, he just sat in front of Cancellara. Boasson Hagen went as early as he could but there was no chance he could fight for the win. Thankfully, he just took 3rd on the line to gain 8 seconds and move him up to 5th overall. Farrar took his 8th win of the season with Goss behind.

All in all, a pretty good tour for us, especially Eddy the Boss looking strong on his debut, Wiggins showing that he can be up there in the early season tours and everyone getting a little bit of fitness.

It's been a long two weeks in the Middle East but now we're back off to cold (and no doubt rainy) Northern Europe for the first cobbled races of the season which we will be announcing the squads for very soon. Then it's Paris-Nice. My colleague will, as ever, keep you up to date with everything going on in Andalucia, but I'll see you in Gent next week.

That's exactly what I thought!
I got some sort of bug where I couldn't 3D race it and it just simmed for me. So no idea, Cancellara was 15 secs down I think.
