Giro d'Italia Stage 16

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2016/Profile.jpg

Race Review

The day Andy has been fearing, the time trial. The only thing going for him that it is going up. How much time can Scarponi take out of Andy today?

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2016/10-Sella.jpg

We start with 10th place in GC, Emanuele Sella. He is the best place Androni Giocatolli rider ahead of Jose Serpa. But Serpa closes that gap today, as Sella doesn't have the best time trial.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2016/9-Arroyo.jpg

David Arroyo is next out the starthouse, and he was been everywhere over the last two weeks. David was an okay day, eventually finishing 14th and keeping his 9th place.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2016/8-Pinotti.jpg

With big time gaps there is really no movement around this guys, Pinotti takes 11th and retains 8th overall.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2016/7-Nieve.jpg

Igor Anton's helper Nieve is next up. And he also finishes near everyone else at 12th, and also keeps 7th.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2016/6-Evans.jpg

The Aussie Evans takes to the course on fire. He sets the new best time at 29'20''.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2016/5-Garzelli.jpg

The old veterian Garzelli is unable to beat Evans, and moves into second by 9 seconds. But it's the next man Ivan Basso who breaks the time by 5 seconds.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2016/3-Anton.jpg

3rd in GC, Anton is next up. He slides into 4th, 17 seconds behind Basso.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2016/2-Scarponi.jpg

Scarponi looking to gain time on Schleck, is surprised when he comes to the line 2nd. With the same time as Basso.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2016/1-Schleck.jpg

All alone against the clock, Schleck is actually looking really good. In fact ...

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2016/Podium.jpg

He surprises everyone. He takes the stage, beating Basso by 52 seconds! They say wearing yellow can make you do wonders ... I guess Pink does the same thing for Andy.

Giro d'Italia Stage 17

Race Review

With a downhill finish Schleck's hopes for another stage win might be hindered, but keeping his leader jersey should be no problem.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/Breakaway1.jpg

Gerdemann gets into the first breakaway attempt.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/VoigtAttack.jpg

With Gerdemann being pulled back, Voigt finally gets a chance to ride for himself.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/Breakaway2.jpg

Voigt is all alone, with Petrov chasing in the distance.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/TopofClimb1.jpg

At the top of first huge climb Voigt still holds a 4 minute lead to Petrov, who is 2 minutes in front of the peloton.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/FirstAttacks.jpg

Is we start the last climb, Igor Anton makes the first move. Followed by Scarponi and Schleck.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/Overview.jpg

Don't look back now but Scarponi and Schleck are closing in on Voigt.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/20kmtogo.jpg

Voigt is caught with 22kms to go, setting up an attack from Ivan Basso with 20kms to go.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/SchleckAttack.jpg

With Basso caught, Schleck finally makes his move a kilometer from the top.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/TopofClimb2.jpg

At the top Andy has created a gap.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/Gaps.jpg

On the downhill clear splits are forming. Schleck leads with a four man chase of Garzelli, Arroyo, Nieve, and Basso. They are followed by a big group containing Scarponi, Anton, and Evans.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/5kmtogo.jpg

The road looks the same with 5km to go, but the road goes flat. Can Andy hold on?

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/1kmtogo.jpg

Schleck can see the finish, but the four man chase group is closing fast.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/Sprint.jpg

And they have sprinted past Andy, and now the second group is closing as well.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2017/Finish.jpg

Nieve takes the win, Schleck comes in fourth (And not 3rd, again.) But the bigger news is the Scarponi group is given the same time on the line.

Unlucky for Schleck, but he'll win it Grin

Kentaurus
Wow great reading, really impressive how strong Andy has been without brother Frank around to help for this tour. The ITT was incredible, gaining huge time on everyone. Looking forward to see how Andy does in the TDF where Contador will be lurking, and I'm going to assume Evans isn't in form for this one based on his ITT. He will be for the TDF.

Giro d'Italia Stage 18

Race Review

After all the mountains, today is classified a step lower as hilly. That being said, Schleck still comes in as a favourite next to Evans and Scarponi.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2018/Breakaway.jpg

Leopard-Trek tries a different gameplan today by chasing the breakaway instead of being in it.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2018/LucaAttack.jpg

A few riders try to jump groups halfway throughout the stage, including Di Luca.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2018/BreakawayCaught.jpg

In the end it wouldn't matter, as Voigt works hard to bring them back before the climb.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2018/FugslangAttack.jpg

At the start of the climb, Leopard makes their first moving sending Jakob Fuglsang.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2018/EvansAttack.jpg

With Fuglsang getting away, Cadel Evans makes the next move. Andy is right there to counter.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2018/Overview.jpg

Fuglsang leads, Evans and Schleck +50 seconds, Anton and Basso +1'55''. Then it was the remaining peloton with Scarponi.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2018/TopofClimb.jpg

At the top, Fuglsang still leads by 40 seconds. It will be up to Evans if he wants to put in the effort to chase for the stage win.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2018/10kmtogo.jpg

And Evans does make the effort, Schleck is having problems keeping up. Still no word on Scarponi.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2018/1kmtogo.jpg

Fast forward to 1km to go, Fuglsang is going to give Evans a challenge for the win. Schleck is still in contact. While over race radio it sounds like all the other climbers are together in a group two minutes behind.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2018/Finish.jpg

Evans edges out Fuglsang. Schleck takes another 3rd. But wait ... in the distance Scarponi has broke away from the others to take 4th. And stranger yet he will get the same time as the leaders with Schleck. I guess the race organizers want to keep Scarponi as close to Andy as possible.

Race Review

Schleck looks to bounce back from another 3rd on Stage 18, and Fuglsang is feeling really good after finishing 2nd.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2019/Breakaway1.jpg

Today everyone wants to get into the breakaway, at one point over 20% of the riders were together. Eventually Leopard gets a handle on it, and everyone is brought back 35kms later.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2019/MollemaAttack.jpg

The next attempt comes from Mollema of Rabobank, and he is followed by Astana rider, Tiralongo.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2019/ArdilaAttack.jpg

At the start of the first climb, Geox sends their man Ardila. Leopard-Trek is controling the front.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2019/Caught.jpg

With Leopard setting a strong pace, everyone is brought back before the top of climb. And now riders tailing off the back.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2019/PinottiAttack.jpg

Now is we reach the gentle slopes that start the climb to the finish, 7th in GC Marco Pinotti decides it is time to attack.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2019/10kmtogo.jpg

Pinotti is still fighting up front with 10kms to go. Andy is looking around and realizes he is down to just Fuglsang.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2019/ZubeldiaAttack.jpg

Zubeldia of RadioShack makes a surprise move up to Pinotti. And Pinotti doesn't like company and attacks right back.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2019/FavoritesAttack.jpg

As Zubeldia falls back into the decreasing peloton, Cadel Evans attacks! He is countered by Basso and Anton. Andy is boxed in by Zubeldia! But Scarponi has yet to move as well.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2019/5kmtogo.jpg

Andy Schleck breaks free! Scarponi is nowhere to be found.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2019/Overview.jpg

Schleck is riding away. Scarponi is in the red trying to follow Nibali.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2019/1kmtogo.jpg

Scarponi has found his second wind, but it is surely to late.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2019/Finish.jpg

Andy Schleck is in a league of his own. His 6th stage win, and he puts the GC, Sprint Points, and KoM almost out of reach for anyone else. Another stage win is possible tomorrow, and he is no longer concerned about the ITT on stage 21 because he now holds a 6'36'' lead of Scarponi.

Race Review

What more does Andy have to prove? Nothing really, but there are still 2 stages left in Giro that have to be completed.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2020/Breakaway.jpg

With a super hard climb at the end of the day, many riders tried to make the breakaway. However the Leopard-Trek boys have no problem keep the breakaway small and close.

At the sprint point 20kms from the start of the climb, Maxim Iglinskiy and Dries Devenyns lead the way. But just by 50 seconds ahead of the peloton.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2020/StartClimb.jpg

By the start of the climb their lead is cut down to 30 seconds, it's game over for them.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2020/VoigtAttack.jpg

Jens Voigt makes a decoy attack for Andy. Will the other teams chase or let him go?

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2020/Overview.jpg

At first they let him go, but now they are unsure. Evans is the only one trying hard to keep Voigt in his sights. His efforts drop everyone but the favourites. Still 15kms from the top of the first climb.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2020/SchleckAttack.jpg

Evans brings Voigt back, big mistake by him. Andy takes his opportunity ...

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2020/SchleckAttack2.jpg

Andy Schleck has hit the favourites hard, nobody had the energy to counter. Leopard-Trek tactics worked perfectly today.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2020/ScarponiAttack.jpg

While Andy is riding away, Scarponi finally realizes the danger at hand. And nobody is willing to help him chase, so he attacks.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2020/TopofClimb.jpg

Andy has an advantage of 3 minutes at the top of the climb. Scarponi is eventually chased back down by the others. If they don't work together soon Andy Schleck is going to win the Giro! (If he wasn't already.)

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2020/10kmtogo.jpg

10kms to go, the gap has grown out another 30 seconds!

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2020/ScarponiAttack2.jpg

Scarponi makes one last attack, since working with Basso and Nieve doesn't seem to be working. But is it too late?

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2020/Finish.jpg

Scarponi is over 5 minutes late ... Andy Schleck rides one of the best stages in his life to secure his first ever Grand Tour! The only thing standing in his way is a 33km ITT tomorrow, an easy victory lap none the less.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/The%20Quest%20For%20History/Giro/Stage%2020/Finish2.jpg

Scarponi takes 2nd, 5'35'' behind Schleck, and Basso beats Nieve for 3rd.

What a stage!!!! I think the Giro is extra secure now! Banana

Mr_Monk
Nice job, I find that the Giro is by far the easiest GT to win in PCM. I don't think you will be seeing this kind of domination in the Tour and Vuelta vs. Contador. Good luck anyways Smile

Pellizotti2
What a time gap! Shock

Great job in the Giro and good luck for the Tour, which will be a lot harder.

Great domination! Smile I don't expect Andy to be this strong in the Tour, because there will be Contador. Good luck. Smile
