@TrekMadone: Ongi etorri!!! Eskerrik asko!!! Now in english (let's follow the forum rules), thank you very much!!!
@tsmoha: Thanks! It was not the best result for us, but there were so many big names here and all of them pushed really hard every stage. I need to be more quite (not attack from the firsts kms) and try attacks like Lastras one.
@martinartola: Yes... it was his first race of the season, but he felt really well (+5) in the last day. I think Lastras was smarter and kept his power to the last climbs. Welcome and thanks for your comments! |

@martinartola: It's just an image i uploaded to photobucket. There is a chance to make a new nationality but then you have to change all the basque riders. I took them out to avoid any kind of problems. |

Very nice reports so far. Great screenshots and nice writing.
Also, I really like your flags. Have you created them yourself?

February 17th - 21st, 2011
(2.1) Volta ao Algarve
It's time for the Volta ao Algarve in Portugal. The team brings a good team but without any of our leaders. There are five stages, the last an individual time trial, with lot of hills and of course the last one who probably decide the GC winner. There are many big names here such as, Kreuziger (Astana), Hesjedal (Garmin), Löfkvist (Sky) and Sergio Paulinho (RadioShack) that will sure fight for the win in Portimão.

Stage 1
Estadio Algarve - Albufeira (154kms)
Noone could with Tyler Farrar in the first stage of the Volta ao Algarve decided in a mass sprint.
Result
1 | | Tyler Farrar | Team Garmin - Cervélo | 3h53'27 | 2 | | Francisco José Ventoso | Movistar Team | s.t. | 3 | | Mirco Lorenzetto | Pro Team Astana | s.t. | ... | 29 | | Gorka Izagirre | Euskaltel - Euskadi | s.t. |
18/02/2011
Stage 2
Sagres - Lagos (206kms)
After a hard stage, Garmin pushed so hard and splitted the group. The sprinters in the front group were too tired to fight for the win, and Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin) took the victory in front of local heroe Sergio Paulinho (RadioShack). Two of two for Garmin.
Result
1 | | Ryder Hesjedal | Team Garmin - Cervélo | 5h46'31 | 2 | | Sérgio Paulinho | Team RadioShack | s.t. | 3 | | Roman Kreuziger | Pro Team Astana | s.t. | ... | 66 | | Egoi Martínez | Euskaltel - Euskadi | + 1'45 |
19/02/2011
Stage 3
Castro Marim - Malhão (166kms)
We tried with Jorge Azanza and Jonathan Castroviejo in the breakaway but the favourites gave us no chance. Azanza took the lead of the KoM classification, a good news for us.
Paulinho took revenge of Hesjedal and won the stage. With Kreuziger they took 22'' to the other GC contenders.
Result
1 | | Sérgio Paulinho | Team RadioShack | 4h29'36 | 2 | | Ryder Hesjedal | Team Garmin - Cervélo | s.t. | 3 | | Roman Kreuziger | Pro Team Astana | s.t. | ... | 23 | | Jorge Azanza | Euskaltel - Euskadi | + 1'34 |
20/02/2011
Stage 4
VR St Antonio - Tavira (166kms)
Azanza went in the BOTD to protect his green jersey. Nobody threatened him, so that secured the first position in the KoM classification.
The peloton did a good work today to get the breakaway before the end, and local Cândido Barbosa was strong enough to take the victory. No changes in the GC with the last ITT (16kms) stage.
Result
1 | | Cândido Barbosa | Tavira - Prio | 4h22'28 | 2 | | Mauro Finetto | Liquigas - Cannondale | s.t. | 3 | | Heinrich Haussler | Team Garmin - Cervélo | s.t. | ... | 40 | | Egoi Martínez | Euskaltel - Euskadi | s.t. |

21/02/2011
Stage 5
Lagoa - Portimão (16kms)
David Millar (Garmin) had set the fastest time so far with 22'01. Vasil Kiryienka sets a good time (22'19) but Thomas Löfkvist beats him with (22'10). It's time for Roman Kreuziger in P3 who breaks the watch and put lot of pressure to Paulinho and Hesjedal. 21'43, 18'' faster than Millar and the young czech is looking good to take the overall classification.
Sérgio Paulinho giving it all to reach the Astana leader, but in the end it wasn't enough for the local rider, 22'20 for the portuguese.
The first sector for the Hesjedal was 40 seconds slower than Kreuziger, so he needs to improve so much in the last part. In the last straight he knows it's over but still sprints to keep the second place. 22'14 for the canadian who lost the yellow jersey but not the second place from Paulinho.

Team Report
We couldn't get a stage win, but Jorge Azanza was strong to win the KoM classification. It's always nice to see the sponsors in the podium, even more at the top.
Next post: Vuelta a Andalucía
Hope you like this format to summarize the less important races. For me it's faster and more fun. I will describe stage by stage UCI Pro Tour races, GT and goals. |

@Pellizotti2: Thanks, i think it would be easier for me and you. I don't have too much time to play, and don't want to play 20% and write 80%. This way I could focus more on playing.
@tsmoha: Thank you very much! |

February 21st - 25th, 2011
(2.1) Vuelta a Andalucía
The last stage race of the month and we travel to the south of Spain, may be looking for some warm, but mostly to improve the form of our riders. Again no leaders here for us, but strong riders such as Juanjo Oroz, Egoi Martinez and Romain Sicard. It's going to be a hard race, starting with an uphill TT, and hilly stages. Big names here in Andalucia, Rabobank brings Barredo and Gesink (Freire as leader but with no chance to win), Astana with Vinokourov and RadioShack with Popovych and Brajkovic.

Stage 1
Benahavís (ITT) (6.8kms)
Beautiful landscapes here in Andalucía while the riders turn the hairpin and start the uphill finish of the ITT. Ivan Velazco did the exploratory job and the rest of the team did an incredible effort today. Sicard (12'24) was leading with Bilbao (+ 3) and Sesma (+ 4) in 2nd and 3rd when the last riders where on the road.
Janez Brajkovic stopped the clock with the same time as Pello Bilbao but Juan José Oroz was driving himself to his first victory this season and the first victory of the team too. 12'19 and waiting for Popovych and Vinokourov to arrive, we knew that Freire was not going to fight for this stage win. Both ukranian and kazakh riders couldn't beat Oroz and we complete an historic stage... 7 of 8 riders in the top10. Oroz 1st, Sicard 2nd and Bilbao 3th.
Result

Stage 2
Almuñécar - Adra (161.8kms)
This doesn't happen everyday, all the leaders' jerseys belongs to us. A great day for Euskaltel - Euskadi. The team had to do a great job to keep the breakaway close in the mountains and a group of 60 riders would fight for the stage win.
In that group, Fredrik Kessiakoff was the strongest man and took the sprint. He put a lot of pressure on us moving to the second place in the GC only 1 second behind Oroz.

Stage 3
Otura - Jaén (175.3kms)
We wanted other teams, specially the sprinters team, to do a bit of work. Last day was really hard for our riders but this day was awful for us. The breakaway succeed and we lost the leader's jersey at the hands of Otavio Bulgarelli who won the sprint between the escapees.

24/02/2011
Stage 4
La Guardia de Jaén - Córdoba (174.1kms)
Colombian Leonardo Duque won the fourth stage in the mass sprint ahead of Patrik Sinkewitz and Alexandre Vinokourov. Bulgarelli could hold the leader's jersey to the last day.
Result

Stage 5
Córdoba - Antequera (163.5kms)
We tried to split the group in the final kilometers, the race leader Otavio Bulgarelli lost the main group but it was impossible to leave behind the other 4 riders who were above J.J.Oroz. Barredo took the stage and Edward King (Liquigas) took the GC unexpectedly.

Team Report
After an incredible first TT, we made a mistake and couldn't get the breakaway in stage 3. We reach our goal, but we leave Andalucia with a bad taste. I think we could have won the GC, with Oroz, Nieve or Sicard, but this mistakes will serve to the future.
Next post: Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Clásica de Almería and GP di Lugano. |

Too bad you lost your lead because of a breakaway.. two riders within Top-10 isn't that bad for a race without ambitions

Great start of the race with domination in the prologue. Too bad you missed the break on stage 3, but still nice with two riders in Top 10.

@tsmoha: We took advantage probably of some AI problems with uphill TT but as you say we finish with 2 top10.
@Pellizotti2: Like @tsmoha, we didn't expect to fight for the GC but we couldn't also control the race.
@Neillster: Thank you very much!

(1.HC) Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
Gent - Gent (200.8kms)
This race probably won't help us for anything but I still wanted to race it. Cobblestones are not the speciality for basque riders so we won't fight for the win, but the strategy is to show the team colors in the breakaway. All the specialist are here, Cancellara, Gilbert, Boonen, Devolder, Hushovd, Flecha, Pozzato, Ballan and the list goes on.

We fight hard to reach the BOTD and we did it with 2 riders, Azanza and Gorka Izagirre. George Hincapie (BMC) was allowed to go in the break but the pack always had control of it.
The rain started and three dangerous riders joinned the BOTD. They were Nuyens (SBS), Elmiger (AG2R) and Hoogerland (VCD). They got out of the rest of the breakaway riders and tried to stay away from the favourites. The attacks started in the peloton with Cancellara, Flecha and Ballan but Hushovd and Katusha guys working for Pozzato didn't let them go.
All would be decided in sprint and World Champion Thor Hushovd was the strongest man of the pack in front of belgians Gilbert and Devolder. Koldo Fernández was the first Euskaltel rider to finish in 60th place 4'42 behind of the winner.

A shame you didn't win Andalucia, if there is a breakaway while I have the leader jersey I start riding from the moment that the breakaway happends. Just so that they don't get further then 2'00" or so... But well, you write a great story and for the Basquen riders the more import races will come!
Succes!

Chanceless at Omloop, but especially Clasica Almeira should bring more Euskatel-action at the top of the peloton!
