Stage 4

This stage to Dingle took in the most strategically important mountain pass of the race, the Connor Pass, a steep and unusually long ascent that came less than 50km from the finish line. Another climb around the Dingle peninsula of Mount Eagle gave the opportunity for an attack and it would be interesting to see how the bunch rode.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-118.jpg

Soon enough a breakaway got clear. We were not represented, this time because we had given up hope on it and put all our eggs in Jon’s metaphorical basket.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-106.jpg

Onto the steep pitches of the Connor Pass (up to 20%) and Cofidis were working hard to catch the break, in the process blowing holes in the bunch.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-102.jpg

Although it dropped some rider’s Cofidis’ tortuous pace put paid to any chances of a successful attack and Jon and Tomas Swift-Metcalfe managed to hang on in the bunch, although they were last from the group in the sprint for the line.

Stage 5

The final stage crossed the climb of Crohane before heading to Cork and the legendary St. Patrick’s Hill, who’s monstrously steep slopes would be ridden on 3 laps of a circuit around the city.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-93.jpg

After lots of aggressive racing on the ascent to Crohane, CSC’s Jason McCartney was allowed free alone.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-78.jpg

Kudos to the man, as he spent a long time by himself off the front, but he was pulled back second time through Cork. Despite the tough hill, the group just thundered along again, shelling riders out but not really making any difference to the GC riders. It came down to a sprint again where our riders were the best represented they have been all tour, with 5 in the group, including Jon Dayus, who took 10th behind American starlet John Devine.

In what is one of our most important races of the year for our sponsors, we showed very little on the front. This went down confusingly well with the Litespeed management. Because they were no longer our sponsors.

Litespeed announced to the press on Tuesday evening that they would end their sponsorship of the team at the end of the season. Their budget had been overstressed by such a high-profile sponsorship and they wanted to go back to what they felt they did best – making bikes. As the team’s licence was in the name of general manager, Ian Braithwaite, they would be given the opportunity to find a new sponsor for 2009. Braithwaite said that he and team manager Harry Lodge, who had his full support, would do their utmost to find new backing for the season and would be ensuring that their riders had contracts for 2009.

Tour of Britain 2008

This is the biggest race of the year for us and now has the riders racing to attract new sponsors. It heads from a flat criterium in London, then an easy stage from Reading to Southampton, a tough stage across Exmoor, a stage through the Midlands, 2 hard stages through Yorkshire and then through Lancashire and Cumbria before finishing in Glasgow. Jon will be racing for GC while the 5 others will get opportunities for the breaks.

Stage 1

A flat circuit race around London. We decided to ride ourselves in easily and refrained from the break. A large group went away.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0008-56.jpg

It managed to hold off the bunch who caught them on the line, Samuel Caldeira taking the win from two Brits.

Stage 2

190km separate Reading and Southampton as the peloton will navigate the roads of the Test Valley and the New Forest on their way to the finish in Southampton’s Hoglands Park. The stage is not too difficult but will decide the first wearer of the KOM jersey.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-119.jpg

Rob Sharman went away in the four-man BOTD.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-107.jpg

He couldn’t get the mountains jersey and they were pulled in with 40km left. He was dropped with 20 to go. Geoffroy Lequatre took the honours in the sprint.

Stage 3

The Tour hits the hills today as the route goes from Yeovil, through Taunton and then out to the North Devon Coast, taking in the major climbs of Porlock Hill, Watersmeet and Wheddon Cross before making it’s way back to Taunton. Jon will be protected while some of our other guys have free roles.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-97.jpg

Dave Clarke made a move to escape but his group was pulled back before a big break of 11 riders broke clear.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-94.jpg

However, they made surprisingly little headway as the peloton kept them on a tight leash, riding strongly as they hit Porlock Hill’s monstrous slopes.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-79.jpg

The break were brought back as the bunch split along the undulations up to Wheddon Cross. It was barely a peloton anymore though, as only 35 riders were left up front. Our riders were brilliantly represented and, coming into the finish, no team had taken control of the group. With the pace lulling, Tom Southam launched an attack.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0007-65.jpg

No-one committed to the chase and he made it clear. He was being caught by the sprinters as he approached the line, but there was no way they were gonna catch him. Tom had taken the opportunity and won!

In by far our biggest result of the season, Tom had won the stage and taken the yellow jersey with it. Could this attract any new sponsors?

wackojackohighcliffe
Stage 4

The team have to look after Tom on this flat stage from Worcester to Wolverhampton. He will probably lose the leaders jersey as Lequatre is equal on time and a better sprinter but keeping him in contention is important.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-120.jpg

We couldn’t prevent this very large break going away.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-108.jpg

It soon became clear that they would probably stay away so we commited ourselves to the chase.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-104.jpg

Up front, it would be two British stage wins in a row as James Jackson of Plowman Craven took a sensational solo victory.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-95.jpg

Disaster struck for us as our entire team was taken down in a crash. Alex Coutts sustained quite a bad hip injury as other riders rode into him from behind.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-98.jpg

Thankfully it was within the last three kilometres so they were given the same time as the rest of the group.

Stage 5

Today’s racing cris-crosses Yorkshire from Rother Valley Country Park to Bradford’s Lister Park. The climb of the Cow & Calf comes close to the finish and could well decide the winner.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-80.jpg

Another large breakaway left the bunch early on.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0007-66.jpg

They were still just clear on the slopes of the Cow & Calf above Ilkley as George Hincapie led the attacks from the peloton.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0009-56.jpg

Both Tom and Jon were among the swarms of riders attacking but only Hincapie forced himself clear. He opened a massive lead on the roads into Bradford and took the win and a large lead on GC.

yeah, i have no idea how there wasn't a time gap.

Stage 6

This could be another decisive stage that heads from Liverpool to Kendal, at the edge of the Lake District. It’s 4 categorized climbs and numerous others may find the winner – and if they don’t, the steep finishing burst of Beast Banks will surely decide it.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-121.jpg

Another large break went away.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-109.jpg

They built up a large gap and it was only by the hills that the peloton started chasing. The pace was enough to drop half the bunch but not enough to catch the break as Marcel Beima took a stage win to add to his mountains jersey, with a 40 strong group led in by Hincapie just behind. In another great ride, 4 of our riders made the main group, Tom and Jon included.

Stage 7

The final stage of the tour heads through Scotland, from Dumfries to it’s biggest city Glasgow.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-99.jpg

Despite his injuries, Alex Coutts desperately wanted to lead the race through his home country. After many attempts, he managed to get away with Ciaran Power. His Scottish fanclub were out in force and cheered them on.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-96.jpg

They had a long day ahead of them and worked well together. But 2 people were never likely to hold off the whole bunch and the gap was dropping fast with 30km left. Alex decided to go down fighting and attacked away from his Irish partner. He got free and powered on towards Glasgow alone, with the bunch bearing down.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-81.jpg

In a fantastic show of strength, both physical and mental, he was still clear with 10km to go. However, it was not to be a fairytale ending for Alex as he was caught under the 5km banner.

It came down to a sprint and Kristof Vandewalle won (usurping Tom in the overall classification).

Richmond Grand Prix

Straight on to the season-ending Richmond Grand Prix around the countryside surrounding said town. Early on it takes in the tough climbs of Buttertubs and Scarth Nick before heading on to the laps of a circuit based around the ascent of Waitwith Bank before heading back to Richmond for the finish. The team hopes to capitalise on their form from the Tour of Britain to end the year on another high. It is Hamish’s first race back since his crash.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-122.jpg

Alex Coutts got in 3 separate moves before deciding to make a move solo. He was riding free on the steepest pitches of Buttertubs.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-110.jpg

A group of 9 others bridged up to him and it seemed highly probable that the winner would come from that group.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-106.jpg

The gap was big as they raced round the Waitwith circuit. Alex rested at the back for a bit before kicking away on the final ascent of the ‘Bank.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-97.jpg

He was over his injury and riding brilliantly. There was a big distance between him and the chasing group, while Dan Lloyd was leading the attacks from the peloton. Jon Dayus tried to follow but couldn’t, although Dave Clarke was on the verge of catching one of the chasing groups as Alex turned onto the road to Richmond.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-82.jpg

The rest of the team readied themselves for the sprint while Alex maintained his ferocious pace. He blasted into Market Square with no-one else in sight and his arms held aloft!

What a way to end the season. A great result for Alex after being so close all year; a good enough result to earn him a place in the World Championships (alongside Tom Southam) after Geraint Thomas and Russel Downing came down with a virus.

wackojackohighcliffe
With no concrete lead sponsor offers for 2009 and riders becoming uneasy, Ian Braithwaite and Harry Lodge decided that the riders should be allowed to find new contracts and offered to help them. Despite a brilliant season and an expanding market in Britain, no sponsors want to take over so the team will disband. The two are very disappointed themselves and offer apologies to the riders and other staff.

That’s it; the dream year is over and so is the team.
