Volta a Catalunya
Stage 4
Today is the first proper mountain stage of this year's ProTour. All the climbers will be eager to show how much they've improved during the off-season. This is the deciding stage of the race. Anyone hoping to finish on the podium will need to finish in the first few today.
With the break almost caught Spilak launched an aggresive attack, we were still 9km from the finish.
A gew km's later race leader Jurgen Van den Broeck showed his intentions to defend his lead. He attacked and caught up to Spilak with ease before going right past him.
Spilak never really built up a decent advantage and was caught by a stretched out bunch. As they streched out even further groups started to form. Spilak was leading the front group of 7 or 8 riders.
Joaquin Rodriguez decided it was time to make his move.
Our man Spilak continued to set a fast pace on the front, many riders couldn't keep up. He eventually formed a small four man group, which soon became two.
Out in front, Jurgen Van den Broeck wasn't seen again today. The Belgian takes his second stage win in a row. In the process he cements himself at the top of the overall standings, only bad luck could deny him race victory now.
He tired near the finish, but Spilak still did enough to finish 9th on today's stage and move himself into 8th overall.

He sure is, guess he must be in top condition.
Volta a Catalunya
Stage 5
First flat stage of the race..., first real chance for the sprinters..., smells like a mass sprint to me...
Andrea Grendene, our best sprinter at this race had a hard time staying in the peleton. He fell off the back of the race and would have to ride a lonely ride to the finish. We wouldn't be represented in the expected sprint.
After failing to podium at Milan - San Remo, Oscar Freire was looking to do better here. He was unbeatable in the sprint, comfortably taking the stage.
There were a few suprising results with Samuel Sanchez taking 2nd and Bradley Wiggins riding home 7th. Simon Spilak was once again our best placed rider, he finished in 14th place.
Stage Standings

^ Thanks.
Volta a Catalunya
Stage 6
Another day for the sprinters...?
The break got away and built up a big advantage. The peleton weren't responding, Spilak saw it as an opportunity to try and win some time back and attacked!
Unfortunately for us the peleton were very alert and made sure he was never too far ahead. From this point onwards the peleton set a furious pace ensuring Spilak was caught soon after, he hadn't used too much energy and could comfortably stay in the peleton.
The breakway, which looked almost assured of victory a few minutes before when they held a 7 minute lead, were now under pressure to hold on.
It was still looking good for the break With 20km to go, the margin back to the peleton was over 5 minutes.
Ever since the Spilak attack, the peleton seemed determined to catch the break.
Just as the sprint started Fabian Wegmann, the last man out in front, was caught to give the sprinters their opportunity. Unfortunately for us, just like yesterday, Andrea Grendene couldn't hold his position in the peleton and we wouldn't be featuring in the sprint.
At the finish Oscar Freire took a dominant victory, making it two in a row for the Spaniard. He won ahead of Robbie McEwen and Greg Henderson.

Catalunya in PCM09 seems to be much better than in PCM10.
There the winner in the prologue has big chances to win the race if his hill stat is better than 72.
So a 8th with Spilak is quite good actually. I always hated this race in PCM09 as lots of Spaniards were dominating, but this doesn`t happen here obviously |

Volta a Catalunya
Stage 7
Oscar Freire has won the past two stages, can he make it a third here?
We sent Simon Ponzi into the break, he took maximum points on the climb which moved him into equal 3rd position in the final Mountain jersey standings.
The peleton always had the break under control and with 15km remaining the lead for those left in the break was still over 1 minute. Ponzi was caught soon after, leaving Haimar Zubeldia out in front alone against the pack.
He continued to hold a narrow lead as we approached the final km's.
We have a crash! Disaster for Omega Pharma - Lotto, race leader Jurgen Van den Broeck is down! We're still 5km from the line so he won't recieve the peleton's time. His team scrambles to limit his losses. Could he lose overall victory in the most unlucky of circumstances?
Absolute chaos in the peleton, bikes are flying everywhere. More big names are down! Ivan Basso 3rd in the GC and Jacob Fuglsang 4th in the GC are among them. Lampre luckily survived the crash.
With so much going on at the back of the race, it's easy to forget those fighting it out for the stage victory. Haimar Zubeldia is caught as the sprint is opened. For the 3rd day in a row, Andrea Grendene dropped off the back of the peleton. But we still had a very decent sprinter in Danilo Hondo. He wasn't very well positioned however.
Inside the final km Andre Greipel and Robbie McEwen are fighting it out for at the front with Daniele Napolitano ready to pounce. Oscar Freire is well back and wont make it a hat-trick of wins.
Andre Greipel is the fastest man though, taking a comfortable victory. Napolitano has to settle for 2nd, his second podium finish of the race. Danilo Hondo finished well to snatch a great 5th place.
2'46" behind an obviously upset Jurgen Van den Broeck crossed the line. He losses his overall lead and falls down the standings to 7th. Basso and Fuglsang come in with the same group, the two now finished the race 25th and 30th respectively. As a result Joaquin Rodriguez takes the overall victory, but it is sure to feel like a hollow win.
Spilak moves up three places to 5th overall. Obviously he can't take full credit as he was helped significantly by the crashes. But it is still a very good performance by him.

@ Roturn - yeah suprisingly only 1 Spaniard made the top 10.
@ FreitasPCM - I agree. He was easily the most dominant rider and really deserved the victory. |

2010 Gent - Wevelgem
Gent - Wevelgem isn't always won by an elite cobble rider. With only two cobbled sections, but many short steep hills, man riders have a chance here. Anyone who survives to the flat last 20km in good shape is a chance.

Fabian Cancellara chose to tackle the Volta a Catalunya and will not start this race. Saxo Bank are still well represented with Matti Breschel getting his chance to lead the team. Tom Boonen goes into this race as favourite, with no Cancellara this might be the best chance the Belgian has this year to take victory. Other strong cobbled riders in attendance are Juan Antonio Flecha, Leif Hoste and Martijn Maskaant.
There are many sprinters here who can survive the cobbles and should feature prominently if the race comes down to a sprint. The best of these are Gert Steegmans, Alan Davis, Bernard Eise,Grega Bole and of course Tom Boon and Matti Breschel.
After losing Alessandro Ballan at the end of last seaon, we don't really have a strong cobble rider. However Grega Bole is in top form and we are confident he can suprise a few here. |

Sorry for the lack of updates, hopefully they'll be coming more consistently in the future.
Gent - Wevelgem
With Fabian Cancellara skipping this race, an opportunity opens up for many other riders who otherwise wouldn't have a chance againt Spartacus. We'll support Grega Bole the best we can but with a very weak cobble team it will be difficult.
Martin Elmiger was the first rider to make a move, we haven't even reached the cobbles yet, he probably knows that he can't compete with the favourites on the cobbles.
Up the Kemmelberg for the first time and Bole is sitting comfortably in the pack with his teammates around him offering support.
And as we go up the Kemmelberg for the second and final time we still haven't had any attacks from the favourites. By this stage Martin Elmiger had built up a large lead of almost 5 minutes, he was now looking like a serious contender.
But the peleton didn't remain calm for long, as soon as we'd passed the Kemmelberg the favourites started to make their moves. Among those attacking were Leif Hoste and Matti Breschel who was obviously trying to make the most of having the full supoort of his team in the absence of Cancellara.
The attackers started gaining ground on Elmiger. With 5 km to the line the chasing group of three , consisting of Hoste, Breschel and Flecha who had just joined them, were breathing down his neck.
But then something amazing happened, just as the catch was about to be made the chasing group took their foot of the gas. Elmigier kept going and before long he was pulling away again. He approached the final km with a healthy lead of almost 50 seconds.
Despite a late surge from behind, Martin Elmiger held on to take a brilliant solo victory. His brave attack had worked to perfection.
Whilst all this was happening Bole was riding a nice race, approaching the finish he was sitting in 10th position on the road, but a large group behind him was closing fast. Could he hold on to take a fantastic top 10?
Unfortunately for us he couldn't, but he can be very happy with his 12th place finish. This is a fantastic result for us considering we don't really have any cobbled classics contenders since the departure of Ballan last year.

Just a couple of questions:
1. Does anybody know how to bold a whole row in a results table? I seem to have to individually bold each column (eg. name, team, time).
2. Is there a way to wrap text colour around selected text without having to do it manually by copying and paste the code?
Thanks |

Grega Bole out for the spring
31.3.2010
A fractured thigh sustained at the KBC Driedaagse van De Panne-Koksijde has put a halt to Grega Bole's spring classics campaign. In top form after winning a sprinters jersey at Tirreno - Adriatico, a top 10 finish at Milan - San Remo and 12th place at Gent - Wevelgem, Bole headed to the short Dutch stage race to prepare for the upcoming Ronde Van Vlaanderen and Paris - Roubaix. But those plans were turned upside down when Bole fell during stage one of the race, suffering a broken thigh bone.
Lampre released a statement late yesterday:
"Grega has sustained a broken thigh bone in his crash, unfortuanately he will be unable to take any further part in our spring campaign. We have one of the best doctors in the business, Emmanuele Bombini helping him during his recovery. Emmanuele has estimated he'll be back training late April, however we'll rest him over May as well before he builds up his fitness during June for the Tour de France."
It remains to be seen who will now take on leadership duties for the remaining cobble races. |

Oh no Will Danilo Hondo now be the leader for the cobble classics? |

^ He might have to be, his cobble stat is actually the same as Bole's, but Bole is much better on the hills and therefore better suited to Gent - Wevelgem and RVV. |
