Saur - Sojasun
Tuco the Ugly
@ valverde321: Thanks. And fixed Embarassed

@ FreitasPCM: Yeah, it was a pretty strange race with those three riders attacking.

Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne: Kuurne - Kuurne; 191.6km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/168.jpg

The team will stay in Flanders to take part in another cobbled semi-classic, Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne. The race is a bit flatter and does not feature as many cobbled sections as Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, but that doesn't mean it is easy. Like the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the race has been dominated by Belgian riders, although no rider has taken both in the same year, bad news for Wouter Weylandt. His teammate Tom Boonen is defending champion, something no rider has successfully defended since the 1970s.

As for contenders, the start list is very similar to that of the Omloop. The major differences are the inclusion of Cervelo and Rabobank, who are led by new Australian champion Heinrich Haussler and Nick Nuyens respectively. It'll be interesting to see what they can inject into the race.

Status quo for the Saur - Sojasun team who will again be "led" by Jimmy Casper. Again, nothing much was expected from the team.

Today, Saur - Sojasun wanted to get a rider into the break, if for nothing more than TV exposure. Stéphane Poulhiès was the lucky rider selected for this duty.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/169.jpg
Poulhiès was the first to break from the pack on the first cobbles.

He would be joined by Nikolai Trussov (Katusha), Stéphane Rossetto (Vacansoleil), Luis Pasamontes (Caisse), Laurent Didier (Saxobank), Sérgio Paulinho (Radioshack), Jussi Veikkanen (FDJ), Alberto Losada (Caisse), Serge Pauwels (Sky), Guillaume Bonnafond (AG2R), Kevin De Weert (Quickstep), Sven Renders (Verandas Willems), Egoi Martínez (Euskaltel), and Sam Bewley (Radioshack).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/170.jpg
Not exactly organized; the break.

The weather played a big factor in the day, as behind the breakaway riders, the peloton would split in two. Most of the major riders were unharmed by the split, but among those left behind were Stuart O'Grady (Saxobank), Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil), and Wouter Weylandt (Quickstep).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/171.jpg
Heavy winds caused the peloton to split.

As the breakaway arrived at the second cobbled section, they had an advantage of 3'22". On the cobbles, it was clear that Poulhiès was the strongest rider. He upped his pace and only Pauwels could go with him.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/172.jpg
Poulhiès and Pauwels alone against the field.

The two riders worked well together on the paved roads, but on the cobbles, Poulhiès ended up doing the bulk of the work. On the last section of cobbles on the day, the Saur rider would drop Pauwels. He was clear ahead of the field, with a lead of 4'16". However, with over 60km of flat ground left, it was highly unlikely he could maintain such a lead.

Poulhiès was doing an admirable job, but the advantage dipped under a minute with 25km left. He would be caught, presumably by the peloton.

But no! It would not be the peloton, as even at this distance, the contenders started to attack. Fabian Cancellara was the first to move. Tom Boonen countered.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/173.jpg
Spartacus attacks far out.

Juan Antonio Flecha (Sky) would get on Boonen's wheel and make the move. Leif Hoste (Omega Pharma - Lotto) would react a bit latter, but also make the select group.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/174.jpg
Hoste did well to make up this gap.

The big guns would catch and pass Poulhiès at the 23km mark.

The four had a solid 50" on the main field, but perhaps made their move too early. This was confirmed when the Cervelo led peloton caught them with 11km left.

More attacks would come with 6km left in the stage. This time, the protagonist was Filippo Pozzato (Katusha). Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky), Frederik Willems (Liquigas), and Hoste, who recovered well, followed.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/175.jpg
Pozzato made a strong move in the last kilometers.

However once again, the move was chased down, this time by Quick·Step. Unlike the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the race would come down to a sprint from a group of around 50 riders. Saur - Sojasun had 4 riders in this group (Jimmy Casper, Jimmy Engoulvent, Cyril Lemoine, and Laurent Mangel), although none were in any position to sprint. All were just trying to hang on.

The sprint opened up with Matti Breschel (Saxobank) at the head, with Boasson Hagen and a Cervelo sprint train behind him.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/176.jpg
The rainy finish.

As Boasson Hagen moved out of Breschel's slipstream Haussler fell off the pace. With the main Cervelo threat out of the way, it looked like these two would decide the win, when strongman Philippe Gilbert came up extremely fast on the right.

But Breschel would not be detered, and managed to hold off the field in a very strong display. Today, the young Dane definitely asserted himself as a true contender for the big classics to come.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/177.jpg
Breschel managed to avoid the car to take the win in Kuurne.

Typical Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne. All attacks will be caught and the strongest spritner/cobble rider not having attacked wins most times.

But nicely written.

I bet Boasson Hagen would have won without a car stopping him before the line Wink

Le Samyn: Dour - Fayt le-Franc: 190.6km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/178.jpg

Named after Tour de France stage winner José Samyn, Le Saymn is the next race on the calendar. Held in Belgium, the peloton will travel nearly 200km on the day. Given the terrain, there are likely two endings possible; a mass sprint or a rider breaking away towards the end. Both have been seen in recent years as the past two winners are Wouter Weylandt and Philippe Gilbert. In 2007, Jimmy Casper won with the now defunct Unibet.com team. While neither Weylandt or Gilbert are here, Casper will be on hand to lead the Saur - Sojasun team.

The start list isn't overly strong. Along with Casper, the main sprint contenders most likely hail from Sky Professional Cycling in the forms of Russell Downing and Christopher Sutton. Bobbie Traksel of Vacansoleil and Gianni Meersman of FDJ also have to be watched.

There are not many riders capable of breaking away on one the last hills. Perhaps the exception is Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil).

As stated, Saur - Sojasun will be led by Jimmy Casper, who is the odds on favorite to take the win. He will have his sprint train from Oman and Qatar with him with Jimmy Engoulvent being his lead-out man once again.

4 riders would make the seemingly futile move of breaking away from the peloton. The riders in the move were Artem Ovechkin (Katusha), Thomas Degand (Verandas Willems), Xavier Tondo (Cervelo), and Michael Kurth (Team Kuota - Indeland).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/179.jpg
The break moves into a Belgian village along the course.

Saur - Sojasun took the responsibility of pace-setting for most of the day. Cyril Bessy, Cédric Coutouly, Laurent Mangel, and Yannick Talabardon sat on the front of the group, controlling the break.

They would allow the break to gain a decent sized lead, but did not want to make the chase too hard. The finish was uphill with a 4% incline a couple kilometers out. By constraining the breaks lead, they would make the ending easier for Casper, who is allergic to climbing.

Even so, the break had a lead of 4'14" halfway through the day.

An Post - Sean Kelly would join the Saur - Sojasun riders in helping chase down the break. This surprised many in the field, although it was clearly an indication that team leader Nico Eeckhout was feeling good.

As expected, the breakaway did not make it, being caught with 18.7km left on the day. Despite all the work the Saur - Sojasun riders had done, they needed to remain on the front a little while longer, in order to keep the pace high to dissuade any attacks.

They were successful in this, as no rider tried to initiate a late move. It would come down to a sprint finish.

Saur - Sojasun had played their tactics well as Casper and his sprint train were fresh heading into the line.

The Saur train on the right amongst most of the sprint favorites.

Stéphane Poulhiès did not do a great job for the first time all season, having to drop off earlier than expected. Thankfully, Romain Matheou was able to pick up where his teammate left off, in sharp contrast to his efforts in Qatar. As the sprint started, Engoulvent deftly moved Casper up the right and launched him perfectly.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/181.jpg
Casper moves past Peter Wrolich (Milram) as he leads the field in.

Casper opened up his sprint from much further out than he had been earlier in the season, an indication of his growing form for Paris-Nice. Oh wait...

Earlier in the season, this may have troubled Casper, but not today, as he would utterly dominate the final straight, moving away from the competition to easily take the win, his 2nd of the season and at Le Saymn.

Sky would complete the podium with Downing and Sutton.

The field was no match for Casper on this day.

Tuco the Ugly
Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen

Three Days in West Flanders is a recent addition to the Saur - Sojasun calendar. After the disappointment of being rejected from Paris-Nice, the team felt some riders needed additional racing to maintain some fitness. All of the stages are flat, while the first one has the added difficulty of cobblestones. The eventual winner will undoubtedly be a fast classics specialist. Jimmy Casper has won this event in 2007, but will not be attending. Neither will reigning champion Johnny Hoogerland.

However, 2008 champion, and teammate of Hoogerland, Bobbie Traksel will be leading the Vacansoleil team. Sébastien Chavanel is probably the leading French contender from the FDJ team. Nico Eeckhout won the 2006 edition and will be leading the An Post - Sean Kelly team.

Saur - Sojasun do not bring a very strong team to the race, and will be co-led by Stéphane Poulhiès and Cyril Lemoine. Great results are not expected, but it is nice to give some of the domestiques an opportunity to lead the team.

Stage 1: Kortjik - Bellegem: 199.0km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/183.jpg

The first stage of the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen would likely be the hardest and most decisive. Nearly 200km in distance and with 8 cobbled sections.

Saur - Sojasun wanted to get a man into the breakaway today. However, attempt after attempt from the riders was pulled back by a very anxious peloton. Yannick Talabardon, Laurent Mangel, and Cyril Bessy all tried, and did not succeed.

Saur - Sojasun was very active in the early moments of the race, but to no avail.

Eventually, a group of 12 riders made it clear of the group, no Saur - Sojasun rider was present...

The break of the day.

By the time they reached the first cobbled section, the breakaway had a lead of 4'45" over the peloton.

Back in the peloton, Stéphane Poulhiès decided to do what any good French rider with no chance of victory does. He attacked 120km from the line.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/186.jpg
Poulhiès was 5'15" back of the break when he attacked.

The peloton would Poulhiès go. The French rider was moving very quickly, as by the 2nd cobbled section, around 25km after he attacked, Poulhiès was only 3'24" down on the break. The peloton was 6'12" behind the break.

In the peloton, Romain Matheou crashed and decided to withdraw.

Poulhiès would continue to ride strongly, and make the connection with the break with 72km remaining. The group, now 13 riders was 5'41" ahead of the main field.

Poulhiès would immediately go to the front of the group and push the pace on. Gil Suray (An Post - Sean Kelly) was the strongest in the group and the only rider able to keep up on the cobbles.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/187.jpg
Poulhiès and Suray would push ahead of their breakaway companions on this cobbled section.

With 50km left, the two lead riders had a 4'26" advantage over the peloton, which was now being lead by Vacansoleil.

The lead would start to come down fast, as Suray broke and stopped working. Poulhiès decided to attack the dead weight.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/188.jpg
Poulhiès was very strong on the day.

Unfortunately, Poulhiès was caught with 9.3km left on the day, just before the last cobbled section of the day. It was a very strong ride and a performance to be proud of.

The peloton was still fairly large despite the terrain, and it looked like the stage would be a mass sprint. But on the last hill, Traksel attacked.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/189.jpg
Traksel puts in a strong attack in the closing kilometers.

The Dutch rider found himself with a sizable lead heading into the finish. With 5km left, he had a gap of 26" on the peloton. It seemed as if this would be enough of a lead to take the win, until Traksel eased off the pace and allowed himself to be caught. A very strange move.

In the sprint finish, Gorik Gardeyn would save the day for Vacansoleil, taking the win ahead of Eeckhout and Christopher Sutton (Sky).

Gardeyn takes a closely contested sprint.

Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen: Stage 2: Handzame Koerse: 228.4km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/191.jpg

The second stage would be much easier than yesterday, being relatively flat and without cobbled roads to navigate. However, being 228.4km long, it would take a strong effort to take the win.

Saur - Sojasun were able to get into the initial break today, something they failed in yesterday. Cédric Coutouly, normally nothing more than a water carrier, was allowed the rare opportunity to stretch his legs. He was joined by Björn Glasner (Team Kuota - Indeland), Pieter Vanspeybroeck (Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator), Bert De Backer (Skil -Shimano), and Nikolai Trussov (Katusha).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/192.jpg
The break on another rainy day in Flanders.

Due to the length of the stage, the small group was given a lot of freedom by the peloton. By the first sprint point of the day, 70km into the stage, the break had a 5'12" advantage. This would continue to grow steadily, until it maxed out at 8'11" with about 120km left on the day.

Then, Vacansoleil took to the front to protect Gorik Gardeyn's jersey.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/193.jpg
So far, Vacansoleil have totally controlled the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen.

The lead would come down, although it took a lot of effort by the Vacansoleil team to reel in the riders. The breakaway was caught 27.8km from the line.

The pace was kept rather high, and the peloton succeeded in holding off any adventurous late attacks.

As the mass sprint began, there was little organization, apart from two Quick·Step teammates. Nikolas Maes was able to set up Iljo Keisse at the front of the group.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/194.jpg
Keisse is in excellent position, but Robert Förster (Milram) is in 4th wheel.

Battling the headwinds down the final straight seemed hard for some, but Keisse was able to hang on and hold off the rest of the field to take the win. Förster came close, but didn't have the power to pass the Belgian Keisse. He woudl have to settle for 2nd on the day. Russell Downing perhaps finished the quickest, but timed his sprint wrong and would take 3rd.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/195.jpg
Keisse takes the win just ahead of a charging Förster.

Tuco the Ugly
Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen: Ichtegem - Ichtegem: 99.8km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/196.jpg

The small Belgian town of Ichtegem would play host to the final stage of the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen. The peloton would race through the streets in a criterium. With virtually no separation in the GC, a victory here could seal the title.

A small breakaway formed early on, but given the length of the stage, they never had much freedom.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/197.jpg
The break of the day.

As the chase took place, Pieter Vanspeybroeck (Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator) punctured and fell off the back. This was bad news for the rider, as he was sitting in 9th overall, and 3rd in the youth competition. He would never regain contact with the group, and ended up losing over 10 minutes on the day.

With the break easily caught, a third sprint finish would decide the race.

Much like yesterday, there was little organization, which saw two teammates capitalize. This time, it was Denis Galimzyanov and Luca Mazzanti from Team Katusha.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/198.jpg
Mazzanti leaves Galimzyanov's slipstream, as Christopher Sutton does the same behind him.

Again, a Sky rider would leave it too late. Mazzanti powered through the finish line to take a dominant victory.

But who take the overall title?

Gorik Gardeyn, winner of the first stage, who finished on the same overall time as Mazzanti and Iljo Keisse for the race.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/199.jpg
Mazzanti was able to celebrates the stage win, but not the overall victory.

Grand Prix de la Ville de Lillers Souvenir Bruno Comini: Lillers - Lillers: 179.5km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/200.jpg

A small race in France, the Grand Prix de la Ville de Lillers will be the last race for the Saur - Sojasun team before a two week layoff. The layoff was not planned, and changes have been made to the squad to accommodate the circumstances.

The race itself is only a recent addition to the UCI calendar, as until 1995 it was a U23 event. Its 1.2 status means it is a good opportunity for smaller teams to find success. Jimmy Engoulvent was the runner-rup back in 2002.

Française des Jeux and Bbox Bouygues Télécom both are led by capable sprinters in the forms of Anthony Geslin and Yukiya Arashiro. After that, the quality of rider does fall off, however a team to note is Roubaix-Lille Métropole who have both Alexandre Lemair (runner-up in 2009), and Benoît Daeninck (winner in 2007, runner-up in 2008).

Originally, this race was going to be an opportunity for Engoulvent to lead the team, but given the teams exclusion from Paris-Nice, management felt the need to bring Jimmy Casper.

Saur - Sojasun sent Jérémie Galland into the break in order to control things and protect Casper's interests. He was joined by 10 other riders, some looking for individual glory, others on similar orders as Galland.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/201.jpg
The break with a bridge up ahead.

The breakaway got a solid lead, but nothing dangerous, as Saur - Sojasun, FDJ, and BBox all worked together to set the pace of the peloton. With 70km, the breakaway's lead maxed out around 5 minutes.

Before the last little climbs on the day, Tony Gallopin (Cofidis) and Andrea Masciarelli broke away from the peloton. Given that the main field was chasing the original breakaway, the two riders never got more than one minute of an advantage.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/202.jpg
Gallopin and Masciarelli weren't able to make their attack really stick.

As expected, the peloton would eventually bring every rider back into the fold, and the riders were headed for a sprint finish.

The Saur - Sojasun train did an okay job, but as the sprint opened up, Casper found himself farther back than he wanted.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/203.jpg
Casper sticking to Engoulvent's wheel, with Lemair on his.

Casper remained patient and did not panic. He dutifully followed Engoulvent who did a magnificent job bringing his team captain up towards the front. When the main sprinters made their move, Casper found himself in pole position.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/204.jpg
Casper shoulder to shoulder with Lemair, and Guiseppe Palumbo. Arashiro is a bit behind on his left.

With the finishing line in sight, no one could match Casper's speed, as he began to pull away in the closing meters. He would take the win by around a bike length. This win was largely due to Engoulvent's great work.

Lemair would hold on for 2nd place, again.

Casper begins to celebrate his 3rd victory of the season.

Haha, no cheating. Being a 1.2 race, it was a really average field, no one in the class of Casper. He also was a 97 fitness as he was peaking for Paris-Nice. Anything less than a win there would've been disappointing.

Nice win (and nice 4th for Arashiro) Wink

Congrats Nice wins, so far this story is amazing.
Wishing good luck for the next race.

Paris Nice is going to be interesting one. A top form Casper probably has two really good oppurtunities there (stage 2 and 6) and just maybe stage 3 as well. Of course it depends who turns up though a rampaging Boonan or Dumoilin may make things a bit trickier!

Great story though, this is a nice French team. Are you aiming for a TdF entry?

As beagle stated, I didn't get accepted into P-N. Kind of messed up my early-season plans as I had based the early part of my season with Casper and Joly peaking for it. It was also going to be Coppel's debut as I wanted him to do well in the Criterium International.

I'm hoping to get an entry into the TDF, but am not sure I'll get one. Surely Cofidis and Bbox will get in ahead of me.
