The races first hilly stage, and its pretty hard to predict just who is going to emerge as the strongest rider. It will also be a first sign of how accurate Appleby's Top 10 aspirations are.
A break went away - briefly including Chris Hoy - before the track rider was dropped - but a monster effort from Russell Downing did much to close down the break's advantage. One of only three Sky riders here, Downing relayed on the peloton for at least 50km - with the odd help from a Sigma Sport rider
Race leader Yanto Barker tried an ambitious move with 27km to go, followed by Metcalfe, Fenn and Dempster - it did not work though.
The attacks came on the penultimate climb. Appleby followed, but Cummings, Lloyd, Fenn and Richardson were strongest.
But all attacks were caught - stupid really, those relaying were teammates of those attacking - except one. Stephen Cummings stayed clear and rode off to the stage win.
A few more attacks came from the pack on the final climb. Appleby could only watch as Bauer and Richardson edged away and took 2nd and 3rd. Appleby 16th.

The final stage of Paris-Nice then. It's hilly but unlikely to be too decisive, with that descent finish. Fleeman starts the day 1 second behind 2nd overall Dan Martin, and theres an early intermediate sprint - so the rest of Raleigh work hard to chase down any attacks
Fleeman duly delivers, to take the bonuses, and move into 2nd overall by 2 seconds
On the final climb of Paris-Nice, Kristian House stretches out the pack - but no attacks, bar Nicholas Roche at the top - which only serves to catch the 3 surviving breakaway riders
A 40 man group heads towards the finish, and mindful that Martin could take some bonus seconds in the sprint, Fleeman - along with Shand - gets himself to the front of the group
And with no other real organisation, it is stage win number 3 for Fleeman, and 2nd overall - a great result, even if it misses the sponsor goal.

The seasons first mountain stage saw a break, including Holohan, gain a huge lead
A group containing the English Peter Williams, the Irish Peter Williams, Simon Wilson and crash victim from earlier in the race Connor McConvey set off after them. Here is the situation with 90km to go as the strongest of the 4, English Peter Williams, crashes.
The break leads the soon to be group of 3 by 8 minutes - and the peloton by 18!
With 80km to go - and the breaks lead now closing on 20 minutes, Barras decides to attack. Riders including Yanto Barker follow - and 10km later on the next climb, seeing the Barrar group get a decent gap, Appleby realises he must also go. This time he is followed by some of the big guns - Cummings, Lloyd, Richardson
The GC riders are now going for it. A long way out but it is vital they do so. Constantly attacking each other helps to drop the weaker, and bring down the gap. With 24km to go, the break still leads by almost 11 minutes, and the early chasing group (Williams/McConvey/Wilson) is still inbetween - but the GC group is now down to 11 riders: Lloyd, Bialoblocki, Barker, Cummings, Metcalfe, Appleby, Dibben, Richardson, Dempster, L Williams and Hampton
The break up front is no longer the size it once was. Holohan has been dropped, with Freeman, Chamberlain, Hatcher, Prendergast and Doull left. Prendergast is best placed on GC, 6'22 down at the start of the day - with Doull a further minute back.
The GC group has caught Holohans group, allowing the sprinter to provide some protection to Appleby for a short while. With 12km to go, the gap to the leaders is 7'20
Up front, Prendergast is making a last ditch efforts to hold on to the virtual race lead
But with 5km to go, the GC group is now less than 6 minutes behind. The good news for Appleby is that both Dempster and Hampton have been dropped, while the group has caught Irish Peter Williams now - with Wilson just ahead, and McConvey also still chasing the break
Back to the break. Just over a km to go, they will at least get the stage. But Prendergast and Doull, the 2 who stood to gain in GC, are both now spent.
Chamberlain and Freeman are fresher, and it shows in the sprint, as the win goes to the Halfords rider.
Hatcher and McConvey take 5th and 6th before the GC group arrives at 3 and a half minutes. A strong sprint from Cummings and Lloyd sees them both gain a little time.
It's been a good day for Appleby though. With a Top 10 being a target for the race, he is now looking very safe in the Top 9 - and 3rd in the Young riders competition, level on time with Peter Dibben and Lee Williams

Theres an intermediate sprint some distance into the stage. But when we get to it, a break of 3 only has a small gap - so Smith helps launch Appleby, taking the 3 bonus seconds, to move up to 6th in GC - and take the young riders jersey
After that, Smith found himself alone up front. So he wenty off on a solo break, won 3 climbs, and took the KoM jersey
6km to go. Richardson, Cummings and Lloyd attack - Appleby follows
A group of 6 forms: Cummings, Lloyd, Appleby, Richardson, L Williams and Bialoblocki - only a small gap - but the sprint is beginning
But as the sprint did begin, Appleby was swamped by riders from the peloton
Only 3 of the 6 remained, and Cummings takes the stage from Lloyd and Richardson
