And in the other news..
Tour Down Under Stage 6
Adelaide - Adelaide
The crowds turned up in great numbers to get a chance to watch our mean machine at work. With the pressure off, we've decided to let the breakaways go and enjoy a bit of afternoon sunlight.
Riders jumped from the pack the entire time, but Astana's workers Vinokourov and Armstrong pedaled hard to pull all the breakaways back.
When Vino and Armstrong got tired, Hansen got to the front to do a little work.
Astana and Vacansoleil seemed eager to prepare the sprint for Richeze and De Haes.
I did want to let them enjoy their day in peace, but when I remembered that I haven't won all stages in one race ever, a train was in order. Now was the time.
4km to go and Van Garderen has done his share. He can go back and celebrate.
I should have probably brought Renshaw for this race, Haussler is definitely a cut above the rest. One more for the road.
And there we are, 2012. Tour Down Under ends in celebration. 4th stage win and 2nd place overall for Heinrich Haussler!

So as the first stage race of the season slowly grows smaller in our rearview mirror, we signed the third and final secondary sponsor.
They say that good things come to those who wait. I've decided to wait for a sponsor who's race of choice would be Giro d'Italia, and Fiat has come knocking at our doors.
The Torino car manufacturer has offered us 150.000 Euros if we manage to win the Italian Grand Tour.
Ricardo Ricco will have a chance to rule the spring once again, and he will have all the help he will need. Kanstantin Sivtsov, Morris Possoni, Franco Pellizotti and Tony Martin are almost 90% certain for the race, rest of the squad will be decided based on their form during the months of March and April. As I only send one sprinter to "less important" Grand Tours, Mark Renshaw will probably go to Italy. Boasson Hagen will go with him to provide help in the sprints, and possibly win another breakaway like last year. Albasini and Devolder are also an option, but Devolder will be needed in Tour de France even more.
If offense is the best defence, does it mean that defence is the worst defence?

To conclude the activities in the month of January, I've asked some of our most important riders to extend their contracts with the team for 2 more years. The ones who signed so far are Ricardo Ricco, Thomas Lovkvist, Mark Renshaw, Kanstantin Sivtsov and Tony Martin.
Contracts of Edvald Boasson Hagen and Maxime Monfort are yet to be renewed, but probably will be in the next couple of months.

Yeah, writing is very nice but you really should limit yourself somehow. As Columbia is a young team, could you not sign riders over 30 (or better not renew many of their contracts at all)?

Great story, more thorough than any other that I have read. It is too bad that you ability to win races makes other s not want to follow. I guess you are supposed to not win to attract people. Yeah, that would be interesting. Thank you again. |

to set things straight, I shall qoute a passage from my introductory post:
Deda wrote:
Seasons passed, victories came, riders evolved, some of them started to fade away, sponsors started expecting more and more, so basicaly, the most important goal of my team for this story will be to match the last season score of incredible 104 stage, overall gc, and points classification victories.
my team will not be satisfied with nothing but victories. of course we won't win everything, as it surely isn't possible with just 26 riders
also, a response to Bosskardo's (good) suggestion:
so as you see, I only have 4 riders over 30 years of age, although Van Summeren, Hansen and Kolobnev will turn 31 this season.
every year, 4-5 riders don't get their contracts renewed and I always bring some new young riders. for the next season I have in mind a couple of Italian prospects which I'm sponsoring.
the only thing I'll be willing to change, if I dominate Tour of Qatar, will be the difficulty of the game.
if we win 5 or 6 stages, I'll go extreme.
reports from ToQ will be posted in the next two days as I have a tight schedule with my lectures (6 hours tomorrow, 6 hours on thursday), and I have to study a lot.
in addition, a great thanks to all of you who think my writing is good, I've been looking for a chance to practice it, and I hope I can only improve!
cheers!

does huge number of absolute leaders any negative effect for riders? I expect it is overchanged by power of your victories though |

only Devolder sometimes says he's unhappy when he is set to free, but noone besides him. have in mind that Haussler and Cavendish can be set as sprinters

you just have to minimise the number of race whit to leader of the same speciality. Exemple, when Cavendish is there, don't have Haussler too.

I'm a little reluctant to switch to extreme, because when I look at the startlists of Tour Down Under and Tour of Qatar, there were simply no other clear favourites in other teams.
2012. Tour of Qatar
Race organisers have accepted to offer 10.000 Euros to our rider Mark Cavendish to be a part of this year's edition of the race. He was reluctant to go, but as a true professional, he agreed to lead the way. My original idea was to send Renshaw as a leading sprinter, but he will have to wait for Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca to be the main sprinter.
In any case, we've fielded a strong team expecting strong competition on the roads of Qatar. Either they were affraid to show up, or just noone cares for this race anymore, none of the leading Pro Tour sprinters decided to show up.
Tour of Qatar startlist:
