July 18: Le Tour de France – Stage 10 | Tallard > Marseille – 229,5 km
Stage Profile
The Alps are done, here comes three succesive flat stages for the peloton. Some riders will be happy with this fact, but a guy like Sastre would like to see some mountain very shortly. He’s been at the front on all the mountain stages so far and at some point he’s going to be the strongest on the slopes. I just know it. Today is the first of the trio of flat stages and it ends in Marseille. It’s one of the longest stages of the Tour with its 229 kilometres it is only topped by the stage to Compiegne, which Boonen won. The Belgian could end up winning again today if he and the other sprinters can get over the two sharp hills towards the end of the stage. The first one, the Côte des Bastides, starts with 35 kilometres left and it is a 7,5 km climb with a gradient of 2.9 %. The last, the Col de la Gineste, starts with 18 kilometres left and it is a 7,5 km climb with a gradient of 3.2 %. Both are 3rd category climbs.
A massive group of 12 riders got away after the stage started with excessive attacking. I guess the riders are still feeling fresh after three days in the Alps. We got Cancellara in the group and he told us he was feeling perfectly today. Besides him, the group consisted of Garcia Dapena, Petito, Baldato, Kiryienka, Roesems, Usov, Thijs, Klier, Bertogliati, Wegmann and Mikhailov.
A group of 12 riders got away on today’s stage. Will Caisse d’Epargne and the sprinter teams let them go or do they still have something left after the Alps?
At some point the pack will let a break stay clear, but unfortuneately that point wasn’t today. The gap topped at 10 minutes with 100 kilometres to go. From this point the gap came down steadily and the pack was in total control the whole time. With about 30 kilometres to go, just ahead of the Côte des Bastides, the gap was around 2’30”. Cancellara who was feeling fantastic today decided to attack here. He stayed clear of the pack (which caught the break up the climb) to the summit with about 40 seconds, but he was caught on the descend. But then Schleck attacked on the Col de la Gineste and he got a small gap. But the pack was also scorching up the climb, so Frank was reeled in shortly after winning the KOM sprint. Haedo was gone so we have no chance of winning today.
Cancellara and Schleck both had a go on the two penultimate climbs of the stage, but both attacked turned out harmless as they were reeled in quickly.
After the descent with just over 3 kilometres to go the only rider we had at the front was Frank Schleck and he wouldn’t win this sprint. Basically he wouldn’t win a sprint period (except when he thrashed Gadret in Paris-Nice). Disaster struck for us just ahead of the 3 kilometres mark when Carlos Sastre and Voigt bit the dust. The pack was strung out very much so maybe they would get lucky and recieve same time as the winner if they hauled ass.
Sastre and Voigt crashed towards the end of the stage and they needed to get up quickly if Sastre wasn’t to lose the Tour de France today.
At the front it was Valverde leading out the sprint. He had all the big sprinters in his wheel however, so he wasn’t going to win. Boonen was the first to spurt out of his wheel, he had Haussler, Zabel, Freire and Hushovd following him. None of them could pass him however as Tomekke took his 4th stage win of the Tour and reclaimed his green jersey. Sastre passed a lot later but he didn’t lose time as the pack was very strung out. Let’s hope he’s not injured. He still has two flat stage to restitute before he has to come up big at the time trial in three days.
Boonen wins another stage as he seems to be the only sprinter who can threaten Valverde in the Points Competition.
Tomorrow features another flat stage, where we will try to get Haedo in a position to win the stage. He’s looking incredibly right now and I think he has the power compared to the other sprinters, to win a stage and it would be absolute huge if he was to.

I know it's been a while since the last update, but I've been on vacation the last week and the transfer season has got me worrying about other things right now. On top of that I have an important paper to turn in on Monday, so don't expext a new update before next week.

July 19: Le Tour de France – Stage 11 | Marseille > Montpellier – 182,5 km
Stage Profile
Still in flat part of France right now as we today pick up where we left off. Today’s stage features an almost classic finish in Montpellier and because the peloton is more or less following the coast all the way on the 182,5 kilometres route, the cross-wind could be a big factor today.
We tried to get Cancellara in the break again today and it looked pretty good as he formed a 13-man break with a lot of strong riders. But the pack wouldn’t let them go so they turned up the heat, led by Quickstep and soon it was reeled back in. It’s the kind of stage where Voigt would try to join the break but he is injured following his crash on yesterday’s stage where Sastre also bit the dust in Marseille. Luckily nothing happened to Sastre.
Luca Paolini took off in a very optimistic try to take a solo win.
Luca Paolini then got away and three other riders also attacked. These were Guesdon, Leukemans and Etxebarria. Somehow Etxebarria was soon dropped by Guesdon and Leukemans as they tried, almost in vain to chase down Paolini. They did come across, but no until they raced past the 50 kilometres left mark. Paolini was beat at this point though and eventhough the pack was only a few minutes behind, Leukemans soon found himself soloing away from Guesdon and a dead beat Paolini.
Björn Leukemans has had a great season so far and today he looked to add a Tour win to his season resume.
But it wasn’t going to happen for Leukemans and already with 30 kilometres left he was back in the pack and things were yet again set up for mass sprint. In the finale Haedo placed himself very well in the wheel of Allan Davis, who were being led out by Jeremy Hunt and Jimmy Casper of Unibet.com. The train situation is as follows: We have a trailing train of three on the far left with Rodriquez – McEwen – Zabel. The leading train with Hunt – Casper – Davis – Haedo – Valverde – Fernandez. On the right we have a train with Ballan – Napolitano – Eisel – Hushovd – Freire – Haussler.
The situation just before the sprint looked promising for Haedo and he is in peak condition still, can he pull off a win?
Hunt was weak however and Napolitano soon surged forward leaving Ballan’s wheel, with Eisel following him closely. Soon the Austrian found himself to the left of Napolitano and he looked to overtake him and snatch the win, when Thor Hushovd came scorching on the inside and eased past Napolitano took take a great win.
Thor Hushovd won the 6th Tour de France Stage of his career as he claimed victory in Montpellier on the 11th stage of Le Tour.
Tomorrow we have another flat stage before the GC riders have to put some effort into it again as the 13th stage features a 50 kilometres time trial and it is a very important for Sastre where we hope he can gain time on Valverde, but at the same time he needs to limit the loss that he inevitably will get to Klöden.

July 20: Le Tour de France – Stage 12 | Montpellier > Castres – 178,5 km
Stage Profile
Today is the final flat stage before we commence four crucial stages. Tomorrow we have a 56 kilometres individual time trial followed by three Pyrenee stages. Today’s profile hints towards another mass sprint finish unless the sprinter teams finally decides to take a day off and recover a bit. A Group of 8 got away today containing Klier, Quinzato, Rast, Troncoso Sobrino, Lancaster, Chavanel, Bertogliati and Elmiger.
Caisse d’Epargne let 8 riders go clear at the start of today’s stage, will they make it as the first early break of the Tour?
The pack didn’t look like they’d bother reel them in for a short period of time as the gap hit 9’30 with just under 100 kilometres to go, but then Predictor and Quickstep took over the initiative and the gap began coming down instantly. About 60 kilometres from the finish there is a 2nd category climb and as the break hit the foot of this the gap was down to 3’30”. The pack paced itself a bit on the climb eventhough it still gained time the break still had a 50 seconds advantage at the top, where the group now just consisted of Klier, Rast, Elmiger, Quinzato, Bertogliati and Voeckler, who had come across from the pack. He was only interested in the mountain sprint, so he fell back right away, leaving the five riders from the early break in the lead for another few kilometres, before they would be finally reeled in.
The 8 riders from the early break was down to 5 as they reached the summit of Montée de la Jeante.
With 28 kilometres Elmiger, who had gone solo on the descent was reeled in as the last breakaway rider and things was yet again set up for a mass sprint finish.
Fred Rodriquez did a fantastic job today setting up Robbie McEwen. Rodriquez raced off the front with McEwen in his wheel, but McEwen is just not at his peak right now and suddenly Danilo Napolitano came surging by the two Predictor-Lotto riders.
Predictor were in a great position to finally claims themselves a win in thie year’s Tour de France, but McEwen couldn’t come through.
Following Napolitano was a small pack of top sprinter including Boonen, Freire, Haussler and Zabel. Napolitano looked strong but then Boonen came out of his wheel and moved up side-by-side with the Italian, and he looked set to take another stage win. But then an inspired Erik Zabel, in an outstanding effort, came from 6th position or so and worked his way up to Boonen, Napolitano and Freire, passed them all and claimed a phenomenal win in Castres!
Erik Zabel won his 2nd stage of this year’s Tour as ran over his opponents on his way to an outstanding victory.
Haedo wasn’t able to compete for the top 10 today because of the 2nd category climb and I think it has become obvious throughout this Tour that he needs to find his feet in Europe before he can begin pulling off wins frequently. Sastre got through safely and he looks very good ahead of tomorrow’s time trial where he really needs to come through to stay in the fight for the yellow jersey.
