Bennett was part of the breakaway today and managed to win his first climb of the race on the second category climb. That would be all that the Kiwi could do today as the breakaway was caught on the final climb
The final climb was once again one that did not produce big gaps between the favorites and saw a sprint between them for the stage win. Latour was been looking really good the past couple of days and today it was his turn to take a victory

Setting up the sprints without Jansen has been quite challenging, always having to improvise something, but things looked good today as Teunissen led Van Poppel under the 1k banner
Van Poppel did not have the speed to deliver today and was overtaken by both Ackermann and Magnus Cort, who had a very close sprint between themselves, with the German winning the photofinish

As we await the big climbs of this year's Vuelta, Bennett joined the breakaway from some more scrap points. He failed to gain the polka dots jersey even though he had the opportunity to take it as he was not as strong as Valgren and Uran on the final climb
Bennett and the rest of the breakaway would be caught by the pack after the last climb, while Valgren and Uran would go on to contest the stage victory. The Dane was clearly the superior sprinter and had no problems taking the win to his name

First category 1 climb of the race meant that Bennett couldn't miss out on the day's breakaway. And he didn't, coming quite close to actually win the stage after a very good attack on the final climb. Sadly, he'd be overtaken by Pello Bilbao on the very last slope of the stage which was just too much for a very tired Bennett, who would have the polka dots jersey to keep him warm tonight though
Pogacar looked very strong today and actually looked like he could finally gain some time on Lopez, but the Colombian had an amazing burst of speed on that last slope that sealed Bennett's faith to catch up with the UAE rider as the duo caught some of the escapees to put a few seconds between themselves and the other favorites in the process

The last couple of days and today saw Hernan Aguirre become Bennett's main rival for the polka dots jersey as the big mountains seemed to be a hat to big for Kochetkov. The Colombian rider would go on and take a very impressive stage on one of La Vuelta's key climbs on Lagos de Covadonga
Bennett came very close to finish second for a second day in a row, but he was beat to the line by a slightly fresher Mark Donovan, with the Brit also looking like a potential rival for the polka dots
In the pack, Lopez was on a completely different level compared to the other favorites as he managed to put over a minute between him and his closest rival, Pogacar. The first Grand Tour victory seems closer than ever for the Deceuninck rider

Today's stage might be very well the key in the fight for the polka dots jersey and Bennett did very well as he increased his lead by 20 points up to a total of 27 points over Aguirre.
Aguirre missed the first attack of the day, which saw Bennett working really hard on the first climb of the day as to not allow the Colombian to score any points. Georgie would go on to win the first two climbs of the day and be second at the summit of the third. He will not score any points on the next climbs, but the day had been a very successful one for him
Lopez was once again on fire today as he put in a very strong attack, which left the other favorites without reaction as they watch him fly away from them. He would catch the last survivor of the breakaway inside the last kilometre to take the stage win from him as he extended his lead in the GC to over two minutes
Sivakov didn't have a good day and lost the contact with the main favorites group and as a result lost the place on the podium that he had gained in the previous stage. Also, with Lopez' current form it's highly unlikely he will be able to get the green jersey back either

Deceuninck are definitely making up for a series of weaker Grand Tours here as even Lopez' team - mates are collecting wins as displayed by Enric Mas today. The favorites stay together until the last kilometre when Mas, Pogacar and Sivakov slightly broke away from the others
While the group that contained Lopez didn't lose a lot of time to the leading group today, a few others did and Adam Yates lost more than half a minute today, which means that Sivakov is back on the podium

So close for Danny, but it's great to see Sivakov on the podium!

Yes, it would be great to keep him on the podium. And the gap to Yates, although not big is still pretty important.

This year's route seems to favor the sprinters more and as a result Calmejane and Alaphilippe tried a long range attack, but with Jumbo still having a good number of riders in the main group, their action did not succeed
Gesink and Van Aert set things up perfectly for Grosu on the last uphill section and the Romanian sprinted away from everyone else when the road started flatting out to take the victory

It looks like everybody has given up on the polka dot jersey except for Hernan Aguirre. He continued his battle with Bennett on the two categorized climbs of the day, but both times Bennett got the best of him
Letting them go away on the last climb was a mistake by the other escapees as they would not be able to bridge the gap back to the duo. Sadly, Bennett lost the sprint as Aguirre gets his second stage win of the race.
Bennett will have the polka dots jersey and a jump into the top 10 of the GC to console him. With the last stage being a time - trial, Bennett only has one stage left to stay away from trouble before completing the triple crown of Grand Tour KoMs.

Aguirre's last chance at the polka dots jersey was to win all of today's climbs. And he was on target before being dropped from the breakaway group quite early on the last climbs. Those previous acceleration ended up hurting him quite bad
The rest of the breakaway wouldn't make it too far either as Lopez wanted to throw one last mountain party before tomorrow's time - trial as he attacked the favorites group and then started picking the escapees one by one
His main chasers were Adam Yates (4th in the GC) and Sivakov who was determined to just follow Yates in order to defend his place on the overall podium. Pogacar, 2nd in the GC, was having a really bad day and was even further behind
A fantastic way for Lopez to seal off his Vuelta win by showing everyone once again who was the strongest climber in this year's race. Sivakov ended up losing a few second to Yates in the end, but he keeps his place on the podium before the final time - trial, with second place also being on the table after Pogacar's off day

The climbs here were a bit more intense than those in Quebec and Grosu didn't have enough energy left to actually get the double and he had to settle for second place, behind Calmejane, who continues a very good Autumn season for Total Direct Energie in World Tour one day races.

Good results in the Canadian classics. In the Vuelta Sivakov should be able to jump to second in the last stage, Pogaçar looking slightly weak. Still a great result nonetheless. |

Pello Bilbao lost his place in the overall top 15 yesterday, but today he will make up for it with an even bigger achievement as he was the fastest rider today and took the stage win in Vuelta's epilogue
George Bennett completes his KoM triple crown today. And he tops with an impressive 8th place in the GC, becoming the first Jumbo rider to finish two Grand Tours in the top 10 in the same year for the last 3 years
Sivakov lost 10 seconds today to Yates, who was the closest rider to beat Bilbao today, but it was enough to keep his place on the podium, still keep 3 seconds (three!) in front of the Giro winner in the GC. The green jersey battle had been lost by the Russian after Lopez took the stage win the previous day, but it was been a very successful race for him nonetheless
Pogacar finished with the same time as Sivakov today, which means he keeps both the second place overall and the white jersey in front of the Jumbo rider. It's the second white jersey in a Grand Tour of the Slovenian after winning the youth classification in the Tour last year
Lopez only finished 25th today, but it didn't matter, his maiden Grand Tour victory had already been well established days prior. He also won his second green jersey, repeating his 2019 performance, when he also won the white jersey. This means that he is only missing the polka dots jersey in La Vuelta for his showcase

Thanks. It didn't really happen in the end. It would have been nice to get the white jersey, more than second place actually. Finishing second in two classifications is a bit heart breaking for Sivakov, but a podium and a stage win definitely makes it up for it
