Tour de France - Stage 7
Hilly stage today. Dont know quite what to make of this one. Granted, it is a decent sized hill with a long downhill on the other side. But the top is 40km from the line. We'll see what the other favorites do and try to make the best of it.
Again, small scattered breakaways is the order of the day. We're not doing much in the form of breakaways at the moment. This is because it's all so nervous up untill now, and i prefer having the guys around sanchez, just in case. With92km to go it's Astana and Liquigas up front.
Astarloza seems to be having a really good day today. We might be tempted to try him out on the biggest climb today and see what happens.
Lotto have put themselves up front now. 65km to go.
7km from the top of todays biggest difficulty Astarloza follows Sauniers Camano on the attack!
They get a good gap to the peleton. Pereiro, Moncoutie and Frank Schleck move with 1.6 to the top. Evans, Leipheimer and the rest are still happy to sit still. Sanchez stays.
900m to the top and Evans is off! Sanchez counters, no response from Astana! Menchov goes too when he sees Leipheimer not reacting!
A group of 5 gather on the descent. Moreau, Fothen, Garate, Evans and Sanchez.
Close behind are Kirchen, Menchov and the Schleck brothers.
15km to go and the end of the downhill. Moreau tries to go on his own. Schleck counters him along with Mauricio Soler who came out of noweher on the downhill.
They are quickly brought back though.
With 4.8km to go Sanchez and Fothen have a small gap of around 15 seconds to the chasing pack. They're coming fast though!
Fothen has to give in and drops a little behind, Menchov and Kirchen come flying up from behind and take the lead. Evans comes up to Sanchez! It will be between these 4!
And it's Krichen in front of Menchov, Evans, Sanchez and Fothen. They have a small gap back to the peleton. We will claw back a few seconds on the riders who are not at the front today!

Great story, and it's nice to see the game in action whilst some of us are still waiting.
What still appears to be happening in the new game, though, is that all the favourites attack on anything that vaguely resembles a mountain - there's no chance of a repeat Gerdemann in the tour last year, say, or Schleck up d'Huez a couple of years back. Any mountain stage is one for the favourites, and it means that big attacks come in from the beginning of the tour/s. Perhaps something that PCM09 will sort out... |

Actually, it happens. Just yesterday I was playing the Vuelta stage to La Rabassa in which there are two major climbs. halfway up the first one, entering the steepest section, Valjavec attacked and nobody followed. that's around 40 kms from the finish.
The favorites dueled all the way up the 20km final climb. Contador destroyed the pack and won almost 3 minutes (it's an extremely hard and long stage). Valjavec won the stage 45 seconds ahead.
Overall, the AI is much better.

I agree about the new AI - its good and varied. In the Australian championships outsiders broke away and stayed away. The favourites came in about 7 minutes aftter the winner. I have seen a 150km solo attack win by 10 seconds and another where a group of 25 were chased down in the last km. |

Tour de France - Stage 8
Stage 8 is a transitional stage between the Massif Central and the Pyrenees. Tomorrow is the first of two stages with high mountains, where we'll get the first good look at who is the strongest and who will not perform. So today it's just staying nice and snug in the pack and avoiding accidents.. we've had enough of those. Yesterdays stage saw us come a little closer to the front again, and Sanchez is actually not that far from the top5. I've full faith in him and that he will contunie to perform as his form peaks within a few days, and then hopefully stays up for the remainder of the race.
4 riders lead the way with 88km to go. Mondory of AG2R is stuck in between the groups here, and the frontrunners have about 6 minutes advantage at this point.
41km. The pack has the breakaway in sight, Milram and Liquigas lead the chase for Zabel and Bennati.
With 21km to go it's all over for the break. Kreuziger puts in the last effort to reel in Schierlinckx of Cofidis. It'll be a sprint!
6,4km to the line and there is a mass crash. It starts with Popovych taking out Klier and Albasini!
Then Ardila bites the dust taking down Flecha, Brard and Contador! A lot of other riders are crashing. But the peleton is so stretched they might not get clocked on it!
Up front, 3500m to go and Galdos just can't keep up with the front. Astarloza has trouble too, while Sanchez is advancing to stay out of trouble.
2100m to go and Pozatto is leading out Bennati, behind Bennati are Zabel and Hushovd. Haussler is in the middle and doesn't mess around with launchers and that sort of pansy stuff and goes full out from the front!
Again the main sprinters are too focused on eachother and stay on Pozatto for too long! Haussler has a several lengths on them when they realize their error.
Zabel does his best to cover the ground lost but Haussler wasn't going to get caught today. Hushovd doesn't have it in him to go past Zabel and the german adds to his tally of points.
6km from the line is Devolder. He was involved in the crashes and he is trying to get on his bike and ride the last stretch but he's in too much pain. He gets picked up by the Quick Step car and his tour is over.

yeah, but national championships where there's a hilly circuit course have always been like that in previous PCMs and still are. I won the dutch championships by 11 minutes on a solo break with Tjallingii in top form

Tour de France - Stage 9
Welcome to the Pyrenees! today is a monster of a stage with 222km and 3 classified climbs. The last 2 you'll most likely allready be familiar with as we are going over the Col d'Aspin and the Col de Peyresourde today. It's a downhill finish, which will suit us just fine. IT will probably prevent big gaps but we should at least be up the for the sprint when it ends.
8 riders broke away early tday. With 127km to go they have no more than 5'30 on the pack. They'll get their sponsors some time on the telly but that's probably it for them today.
On the smaller Col des Ares the gap has allready begun to drop. And there's still a 100km to go and two 1st category climbs to negotiate!
Gerdeman, Suitsou, Horner, Brajkovic and Camano uses the small obstacle to launch an attack. Double Astana and Double Columbia with 94km to go.
60km. We've begun the climb up the Pyresourde. It's beginning to dawn on us what kind of power the other teams posses as Dekker, Gesink, Van den Broeck and Popovych are allready setting a killer pace.
At the top of of the climb Moreau gets up to his usual antics and launches an attack with Jens Voigt. They have't got a very big gap though and Lotto/Rabobank will reel them in quick.
46km to the line. Astarloza is doing his job for Sanchez without making a fuss. Bringing him some water as we near the bottom of the descent that will more or less lead directly into the climb up the Col d'Aspin. The pack has been reduced to around 70 riders now.
And we're on our way up the final climb. With 8.2km to the top Robert Gesink is really putting his strength into it now. It's starting to show as more and more riders drop! Small attack are launched but immediately reeled back in.
5.3km to the top and here we go! Menchov attacks and Leipheimer counters him. Evans has sent Popovych to the front and he's still rather fresh. Sanchez will get some carbs in him and wait it out just a little more.
4.4km to the top and Kirchen attacks. Sanchez counters, Evans counters!
At 2.1km to the top it's Sanchez and Evans in front! Sanchez is making sure he doesn't overextend himself so he'll come over the top with the other favorites.
And we're on our way down. 23.6km to go and it's all downhill. Sanchez should be able to recuperate a little as this is his terrain. Everyone is here except Fothen! That means one less rider in front of us in the GC!
4.2km left and everyone is just sitting tight. Sanchez will try and grab this stage as he's gotten a little strength back and can probably get a gap before the sprint!
2,7 to go, only Garate in front of us.. this is it, here we go!
1500m, Evans is awake and tries to go with Sanchez but Sanchez is faster!
And we have a gap! 700m to go for Evans, 400 for Sanchez. We'll take this!
And he crosses the line first in the first mountaintest of the tour! Evans tried a last ditch effort to catch up but there was just no way! Smart riding Samuel Sanchez!

That was just fantastic for us! We've moved up to 6th in the GC, and Forthen is still ahead of us. I'm sure we'll take him in the mountainstage tomorrow. We have several dangerous riders looming behind us in the GC, and we still have to account for a long TT at the end of the tour. But all in all, we're happy and confident right now. |

I'm absolutely loving it right now It's brough him a lot of wins this season. It's a luxury you don't get a lot. But when you have it, it's worth so much. |
