sutty68 - I agree. Basso worked well, but Contador was just unbeatable.

dienblad - Only the final climb is really, really hard. The AI decided to give the same time to everybody on that group, but Gárate in 14th was not that far away to have 3 minutes on the main group.

Selwink - I believe he can, but Contador is also a very good time trialist.

SSJ2Luigi - Last time CSC made him lots of offers and he never accepted. And then he signed for Rabobank for less money. Basso is also on his last year so...

Giro D'Italia Stage 13


On the 13th stage we had climbs all day, progressively harder, with a finish downhill. A very dangerous stage where the favorites needed to be alert and their teams needed to work a lot to control the race.

With 33 km to go and right after the penultimate descent of the day, Simoni, Contador, Moncoutié and Gadret attacked. Two more strong groups are ahead with riders like Ullrich (finally!), Evans, Jaksche or Cioni.

With 4 km to the end of the climb Julich and Valjavec had brought Basso on the front of the Group as Contador and the late escapees had been caught. The early BOD was on sight and more attacks were to come.

While Gárate attacked, Basso's pace created him a gap to the other favorites. Could he increase it?

Basso reached the escapees at the top of the climb with only Ullrich at the front.

And Basso decided not to stop and trying to reach Jan Ullrich.

With no major changes on overall, today another 2 riders abandoned including CSC Martin Pedersen. It was too hard for the young danish who worked a lot on the last days.

Giro D'Italia Stage 14


Today we had one of the crucial stages of this year Giro. 245 km with two 2nd category climbs on the first 20 kms then two huge 1st category climbs on the second half before the final climbs, a 3rd category and the final climb to the finish on Plan de Corones. A huge task that the riders had in hands before a flat stage and the deserved rest day.

On the last 1st category climb to Passo Delle Erbe and with still 45 km to go, Basso decided to increase the rhythm and immediately created a gap. That caught his opponents by surprise.

The other favorites had to respond and caught him with 5 km to the end of this hard climb. A very small group of riders managed to follow them with Rabobank with 3 men and Discovery with 2.

With 20 kms to go and after Zubeldia and Gadret attacked on the downhill attacks came on the favorites group. Kashechkin, Leipheimer, Parra Pinto and...Contador!

The 6 formed a group and only 9 men were after them and with Contador ahead, the 2 Rabobank didn't cooperate. Cunego needed to chase, his lead was in risk.

With 9 km to go the gap was still open and Basso decided it was time to go to the front. Only Cunego, Popovych and Simoni followed his pace.

And Basso work lead him and Popovych to drop Cunego. Now only Kashechkin, Contador, Zubeldia and Parra Pinto remained ahead.

Contador was now alone with Kashechkin, while Basso dropped Popovych and was trying to reach Zubeldia and Pinto.

Contador dropped Kashechkin with 1.5 km to go.

Reporter - Hi Ivan, what do you have to say after today's stage?

Ivan Basso - Everything is very complicated now. Today it was a very hard day, maybe the tougher on this years Giro. Almost 8 hours on the bike, i'm very tired.

R - Winning the Giro is now a miracle?

IB - Not a miracle, but certainly is very hard. With over 3 minutes down i'll need 2 or more excellent days. I can only say i don't surrender. There are still 4 mountain stages and a time trial. It is possible.

R - That attack so far from the finish was a good idea?

IB - I couldn't just be waiting for the other guys to preserve their energy and then attack me. I was trying to see what would happened and i forced the other favorites to work to go after me.

R - Why didn't you follow Contador when he attacked?

IB - When both Cunego and Popovych stayed i decided to preserve my energy for the last climb. Maybe i did wrong, but i think i worked a lot later and to drop 2 of the first 3 is not easy.

R - Yes, but you couldn't reach Contador. Is he unbeatable?

IB - It's true he is very strong and he's making one hell of a Giro. But their team has the hot potato now on their hands. With a small team to control everyday they can't be on the last climbs of the day with him. So, i still have chances!

Meanwhile Tour of California ended with the victory of Gianpaolo Caruso with Vandevelde in 5th place and Zabriskie in 10th.

Giro D'Italia Stage 15


On the paper Stage 15 was for sprinters, but after yesterday's effort and with the two 4th category climbs on the way, the faster GC contenders might also be involved on the bonus seconds fight. Bettini, of course, has won three stages and wanted to win here.

Jakob Piil was on the break of the day. They got 7 minutes before the peloton started to chase.

Lotto, Milram and Quickstep controlled the gap, working for McEwen, Petacchi and Bettini. Rabobank had the day off.

Giro D'Italia Stage 16


After the rest day the peloton started today's stage by climbing Passo Di Stelvio. And that was just the first of 4 climbs, including one leading to the finish. Another hard day in the mountains.

CSC let Rabobank do all the work on the first two climbs of the day. Menchov and Landis had to work from early on. The gap to the BOD got to 20 minutes.

With 7.5 km to the end of the penultimate climb Mancebo, Leipheimer, Zubeldia and Cunego attacked. Rabobank continued their work.

Moving downhill to the last climb the peloton was reduced to 26. Ahead the late attackers and the BOD, who seemed to have the victory assured.

The final climb was just 9 km and Basso had Valjavec with him.

Rabobank gave no chance to any dangerous guy to get away and it will be very hard to counter their work. Today another significant amount of riders have abandoned including Petacchi and McEwen. There are only 138 men left on 2007 Giro.

If we had difficult stages until now it's hard to name what the riders had ahead today. 266 kms! 7 climbs including two long 1st category. The last climb finishes 42 kms from the finish with a long descent on the way.

Andreassen was on the BOD. With 94 km to go they had 14 minutes on the peloton, but with everybody already very tired.

Basso wanted so hard the top 3 that he fell to 5th place! That final effort together with the the strange criteria to decide the time gaps made Parra Pinto and Cunego passed him again on overall. Tomorrow he has a final chance to get closer to Contador and gain time to the other three ahead of him on GC with the long time trial.

Rabobank showed again their strength and they seem unbeatable.

You should do a detalied simulation instead of a quick simulation to gain much time to other rivals.
