Ryan Eastman - Bontrager 2013 February

Shame Grenda wasn't ablet to reach the Top 10, a decent result by the team though. Gallopin has shown all his talent and Orica has simply dominated the NC.

The Emerald Race

www.realroadracing.com/images/Newsdesk_Forum/2012/EmeraldRoadRacing-01.jpg

Just like last season I will participate in The Emerald Race in Australia. But this year it will be my season opener and my form is obviously not very good yet. The race is a mix of a sprinter and puncheur race, so maybe I can repeat my good performance of last season, where I finished 12th.

But our main leader will be Ben Grenda. The Australian comes with a better form after San Luis and even if he isn`t the best uphill sprinter we hope for a good result. Jacob Rathe is another rider, who wants to step up this season and will get a free role today.
Brown, Leonard, Lawrence, Atkins and Wilson complete our 8-rider squad here.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/PCM0003.jpg

Rohan Dennis is back to defend his win from 2012. He surely is one of the biggest favourites once again. Other riders to watch are Geraint Thomas, who was going down to CT this season, Van Poppel, Porsev, Sulzberger or Lloyd.

Our goal for this race is to get a top15. To reach more we all need a very good day. My personal goal is a place in the top25, which would mean a good start into the season.

A nice ride from Dale Parker Wink

You do realize that this is the result from last season?
Parker meanwhile is riding for Orica GreenEdge. The 2013 report will come tomorrow I guess.

The Emerald Race

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Emerald2013_1.jpg

Finally the season starts for me. And in late January it`s a big advantage to be here in Australia, where it`s 35°C. A big difference to California in the last weeks.
The race has quite a lot of hills and it will give me a good impression on how far I am that early in the season.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Emerald2013_4.jpg

Our goal was to be in the breakaway and so Atkins and Brown both tried it several times. The early Mur with ~15% looked perfect to attack and so Atkins is trying it. Also nice to see that some US fans are cheering on the road sides as well.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Emerald2013_6.jpg

But unfortunately all our attempts had no success and so we saw a group of 6 forming the breakaway without any Bontrager appearance.
Watson (Jayco)
Davis (Genesys)
Menville (NSP)
Poorseiedi (Rabobank CT)
Bacon (Auber)
Vervaeke (Jong Vlaanderen)

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Emerald2013_8.jpg

146km to go and the peloton slowed down a bit. The breakaway was allowed a 5min gap and so it was time to have a small talk with Ben Grenda. So far I haven`t met him very often before as he wasn`t in the winter camp in California. But he will definitely help us as he is our only real sprinter. Something that was surely missing the last season.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Emerald2013_10.jpg

The breakaway was caught with ~10km to go and the sprint preparation started. Rabobank CT and Sunweb are forming their trains and while Grenda takes probably the best position behind Van Poppel, I was able to get behind Sulzberger with Rathe behing right behind me. So far my legs are feeling quite well and hopefully I can hold on on the uphill sprint.

Rohan Dennis, winner in 2012 is also in a good position and is surely a rider to watch as well.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Emerald2013_12.jpg

But it`s someone else. Sérgio Ribeiro from Efapel was creating a decent gap and wins this sprint easily. Dennis can`t defend his title and finishes on the 2nd ahead of Dupont and Van Poppel.

For us the sprint wasn`t good at all. Grenda couldn`t stay behind Van Poppel on the uphill part and I lost my energy on the last 2km to finish on the 40th only. It was definitely too long in the end and shows me that I need a bit more training before my next race in South Africa.

Pointwise this race was surely a disappointing without any reward. But that early in the season we didn`t expect much more and my legs were feeling quite well in general and give me hope for the next races.

A very quiet day. Unfortunate that you couldn't get anyone to break away.

Miguel98
You couldn't get anyone into the break wich his sad. Still, Sérgio Ribeiro won. Cool

roturn
Indeed a rider in the breakaway would have made it more successful. Still. Just a first race of the season. Next will hopefully be better. Wink

Nanjing GP

Ben Grenda was leading our team in China. The parcours should suit him much better for him than the Emerald Race. He was mainly supported by Rathe, Atkins and Brown, who was actually the lonely breakaway rider for most of the race. After a ~150km solo he was caught with 7km to go and couldn`t make the big coup.
Still in the flat sprint this time Grenda was able to get a good wheel behind CT sprint star Van Poppel and Emerald winner Ribeiro.
In the end it wasn`t enough to top 5 here, but with a 8th it was about what we had expected from him this season. Definitely a success for our team in a race with lots of good sprinters.

Tour of South Africa

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/RSA2013_Logo.jpg

The Tour of South Africa is a UCI Africa 2.2 race with 7 stages. It`s mainly flat with some tough hilly stages. The team has put trust in me and I will be here to ride for a good GC.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/RSA2013_1.jpg
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/RSA2013_2.jpg
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/RSA2013_3.jpg
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/RSA2013_4.jpg
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/RSA2013_5.jpg
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/RSA2013_6.jpg
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/RSA2013_7.jpg

My focus will be in especially on the 2nd and 6th stage as these look to be the hardest. There the GC might be decided and I want to do well there.
But also on some of the other stages gaps are not impossible as it`s quite hilly in general. As we won`t have a sprinter here, we will try to be in the breakaways quite often.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/RSA2013_Team.jpg

Leonard, Brown and Atkins will be a solid support. All of them will try to help me to be in a good position to fight for a top 15 here. Also these 3 might be the best chances in a breakaway attempt. All of them should get chances for sure. Wilson and Lawrence might struggle quite a bit on the hilly terrain, but they are here to learn mainly. It`s their first season and maybe we might even see Lawrence participating in a sprint here.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/RSA2013_Startlist.jpg

The start list is quite strong to be honest. We have lots of African teams here who should be extra motivated.
Most known names and obviously some of the biggest favourites are Schumacher, Thomas, Van Poppel, Bauer, Roulston or the Van Rensburg brothers. But the race is very unpredictable and it`s quite hard to predict a possible outcome here.

My goal is a top 15. It won`t be easy as my fitness is still not on the best level but I will try everything. Also being in the breakaways must be a team goal as we are definitely one of the weaker squads here and this might be the only way to top 10 on the flat stages.

Ian Butler
Top 15, that's ambitious, but Ryan can do it!

Ambitious, maybe, but the profiles should suit him I hope. On the other hand hilly stages like this in PCM12 don`t always work as you would like. So far I haven`t played more than the first stage and I never played this race before, so I had no idea, what to expect. Wink

Tour of South Africa

Stage 1: Menlyn Park Shopping Centre - Montecasino (155,0km)
imageshack.us/a/img715/7610/rsa201311.jpg

It`s the first stage and it`s already quite hilly towards the end. Still the slopes are not very hard and experts expect a sprint finish here. Bad news for us obviously as we don`t have any sprinter in our squad. So being in the breakaway is needed today.

imageshack.us/a/img545/369/rsa2013110.jpg

Luckily Corey Leonard was able to join the breakaway. The young American is going into his first professional season and is a big puncheur talent.
The other riders are Groen (Metec), Lagab (Algerie) and Homrani (Tunesia).

imageshack.us/a/img515/1324/rsa2013112.jpg

The peloton chased the group a lot and we have a new group of 5. This time it looks to be a success. Good for us that Leonard is still in there.
Leonard (Bontrager)
Homrani (Tunesia)
Ouedraogo (Burkina Faso)
Habiyambere (Rwanda)
Foder (Chrisina Watches)

imageshack.us/a/img507/3044/rsa2013114.jpg

Leonards goal was the KoM jersey. With only one rewarded climb today it was good for him that the others weren`t even challenging him. He would have been the best puncheur probably but this way he was saving energy.
Big success for him as he will wear the jersey at least tomorrow.
Behind him Foder and Habiyambere roll over the line next.

imageshack.us/a/img842/4258/rsa2013116.jpg

The sprint was challenged a lot more. Foder proved to be the strongest this time with Leonard comfortably sitting just behind him and Habiyambere.

imageshack.us/a/img717/3032/rsa2013118.jpg

Rabobank CT and the African Continental Team were doing the work now. With 80km to go the gap is at 5min but slowly going backwards again. No question Danny Van Poppel is the top favourite today. It would be a huge surprise if he won`t ride in the Pro Tour next season as he is one of the fastest sprinters and surely one of the best Dutch sprinters.

imageshack.us/a/img15/4264/rsa2013120.jpg

8,4km left and Leonard is caught. It was a nice ride for him and he will be rewarded with the KoM lead. On the other hand it was quite close to a possible stage win.
Now it`s about fighting to stay in the peloton for him.

imageshack.us/a/img600/9229/rsa2013122.jpg

The two working teams are now also forming their sprint trains. Van Poppel on the right and Van Heerden on the left. In between lots of other good sprinters like Van Rensburg, Haedo or Pedersen.
And as my legs were feeling well today I am also in a front position.

imageshack.us/a/img15/9025/rsa2013126.jpg

It was a very close sprint between the first three. In the end Van Poppel justifies his favourite role and wins ahead of Van Rensburg and Guldhammer. Van Heerden is 4th ahead of Haedo and Berhane.
I finished on the 18th today, which is obviously not a good sprint result for a sprinter. For me it`s probably the maximum and I am quite happy with it. Tomorrow will be a more important stage, where I want to show something more.

More good news for us that Leonard was able to hold contact. Due to the 4 bonus seconds in intermediate sprint he will move to the 5th in the overall now. In general a very good stage for us.

Right tatic to put Leonard in the break, now he's 5th in GC. About Ryan i don't think he can do a lot more in the sprint; 18th for him is good though.

sutty68
Ryan looking comfortable at the moment Wink

Ian Butler
Van Poppel with a close sprint there Shock
Come on Ryan, almost your time.

roturn
Thanks for the comments. I wanted to test what Leonard is able to do due to his low flat/stamina. Quite a lot obviously. Wink
Van Poppel became a beast. He is 80 or 81 in sprint and 70 or 71 in hills. Perfect combination and definitely the strongest in the CT.

Tour of South Africa

Stage 2: Montecasino - Montecasino (156,6km)
imageshack.us/a/img706/5568/rsa201321.jpg

It`s the easier of the two hilly rated stages. Still we hope that riders like Van Poppel will lose time today. Otherwise it will be difficult to distance him with all the bonus seconds he might collect.
Our goal is to be in the breakaway again and stay as long with the best as possible with me and Leonard, who has a good GC position after yesterday.

imageshack.us/a/img707/224/rsa201322.jpg

We haven`t formed the breakaway yet but Nathan Brown is always jumping with the attackers and taking the first KoM points ahead of Pena Pena and Gomez Colinas.

imageshack.us/a/img577/7748/rsa201324.jpg

It seems like the peloton is finally allowing them to create a gap.
Brown (Bontrager)
Pena Pena (Tunesia)
Gomez Colinas (Gabon)
Belhoucine (Algerie)

imageshack.us/a/img197/1353/rsa201326.jpg

Christina Watches and Rabobank CT are doing the pace at the moment for their hilly leaders Schumacher and Van Poppel.
110km to go and 4'30 gap for Brown.

imageshack.us/a/img132/6426/rsa201328.jpg

Brown also takes the next KoM points and takes over the jersey from Leonard. Pena Pena again 2nd ahead of Belhoucine this time.

imageshack.us/a/img833/5661/rsa2013210.jpg

As Pena Pena wins it the next time ahead of Brown and Gomez Colinas it will be very close and the last KoM will decide it.

imageshack.us/a/img27/8205/rsa2013212.jpg

The gap is down to 2min with 50km to go. More riders decide to attack and all of them are dangerous riders
Kireyev (Cote d'Ivory)
Kachelhofer (Jo Piels)
Baez (EPM)
Lang (Rwanda)

imageshack.us/a/img547/1733/rsa2013214.jpg

Good news for Brown. As the late attackers just caught the former breakaway ahead of the last KoM Pena Pena isn`t getting any more points and Brown will wear the jersey tomorrow. Kachelhofer, Lang and Baez are the first over the line this time.

imageshack.us/a/img248/5066/rsa2013216.jpg

With 34km to go Brown and his former companions are caught. Only the 4 late attackers are still having a 1'40 lead.
But the peloton is really going fast now.

imageshack.us/a/img832/8242/rsa2013218.jpg

19km to go and all riders are caught. I am still in the first rows having good legs today, while Leonard is a bit struggling but still doing well in the middle of the peloton, which reduced to the half now.

imageshack.us/a/img577/9938/rsa2013220.jpg
imageshack.us/a/img690/2033/rsa2013221.jpg

We see more and more attacks. But always Rabobank CT is chasing them down. Next to Van Poppel, who is not looking that good today it`s Daan Olivier, who could be their leader today.
And good to see that Leonard recovered a bit from his struggling and is back at the front.

imageshack.us/a/img706/9881/rsa2013223.jpg

Again several riders attack on the flatter part before the final hill.

imageshack.us/a/img21/9338/rsa2013224.jpg

And this time I decide to follow. Only 3km left and not every second can be import.

imageshack.us/a/img707/8898/rsa2013226.jpg

But unfortunately we late attackers were caught in the sprint again. But I have still a good position at the moment.

imageshack.us/a/img839/285/rsa2013228.jpg

Very close sprint and in the end it`s Lammertink on the right winning even though Diaz is celebrating on the other side. Too early. Jack Bauer, Berhane and Schumacher are good riders finishing the next.
I lost some ground in the end after my attack but still finish on a decent 14th counted the same time.

Leonard also finished in this group of 52 as 22nd and keeps his good GC position. And even better, Nathan Brown takes over the KoM lead.
