Stage 19 brings the riders for the first time in the Vuelta over 30 years back in Basque country. The 158.5 kilometres from Noja to Bilbao brings us a hilly road, with the Alto el Vivero twice in the last 50 kilometres.
img829.imageshack.us/img829/5910/219perfil.jpg

But strangely, no rider from Euskaltel - Euskadi in the attack today.... They are disappointing all Vuelta and also in their own region. In the ascend of the first climb of the day, the Puerto de la Granja, Julián Sánchez Pimienta from Caja Rural attacks. Because he can win some KOTM-points, Wout Poels counterattacks, but has to let the most point to Sánchez Pimienta. To their own surprise, the 2 riders have a gap bigger than 1'30 at the summit, so they decide to continue their adventure. Poels wins the second KOTM-sprint, at the Puerto de las Munecas. With 92km to go, they have a 5'28 lead to the peloton.
img94.imageshack.us/img94/8378/3kotm12.jpg

In the streets of Bilbao, they still are 4'45 in front of the peloton, when they start the last 2 local laps. The domestiques of Katusha and Lampre are in front of the peloton, setting a high pace.
img100.imageshack.us/img100/4946/4is2.jpg

The riders have to climb the Alto El Vivero twice. The climb is 7.3 kilometres long and has an average gradient of about 7.5%.
img249.imageshack.us/img249/5607/altoelvivero.jpg

Poels is the first on the summit while climbing the Alto El Vivero for the first time. The peloton follows at 3'24, with 39km to go.
img291.imageshack.us/img291/8346/5kotm3.jpg

Sánchez Pimienta sets a high pace in the second ascend and Poels is struggling. He sees the Spanish rider slowly ride away, metre by metre...
img254.imageshack.us/img254/8665/618km.jpg

With 17km to go, there is the first action in the peloton. GC's 3 Joaquim Rodríguez wants to secure himself of the third place in this Vuelta and attacks. He is 1'38 behind Sánchez Pimienta.
img847.imageshack.us/img847/327/717km.jpg

Robert Gesink counterattacks Purito and is firstly only followed by Denis Menchov. Damiano Cunego makes a strange move by staying behind in the first place, but then accelerates like no one can do this Vuelta and closes the gap to the chasing group, jumps over them and creating a small gap!
img339.imageshack.us/img339/6528/8145km.jpg

But at the summit of the Alto El Vivero, the group comes together: Sánchez Pimienta and Poels are joined by Gesink, Cunego, Rodriguez and Menchov. Luis León Sánchez and Jelle Vanendert follow at '25, and another group consisiting of Peter Sagan, Leonardo Bertagnolli (Lampre), Javier Moreno (Caja Rural) and Rubén Plaza (Movistar) at '50.
img266.imageshack.us/img266/6149/9kotm4.jpg

In the descend towards Bilbao, the 12 riders join each other and with less than 5km to go, all is open for the stage win.
img856.imageshack.us/img856/3599/105km.jpg

We decide to ride for the chances of Sagan, being the best sprinter of our team. He has a small train of Gesink & Vanendert in front of him. But Rodriguez and Cunego are close.
img37.imageshack.us/img37/2854/112km.jpg

Sagan hasn't got the legs to win this one, so again it's a battle between Purito and Il Piccolo Principe.
img191.imageshack.us/img191/8387/121km.jpg

And the Italian makes it 3 stage wins in a row! He's truelly amazing right now. Sagan sprints to the 3rd place.

Word from the DS: We really tried to bring Sagan to the win today, but apparently he lost too much energy in the last ascend of the Alto El Vivero and the chase in the descend. Cunego looks unbeatable, but tomorrow is a better opportunity for Sagan, because the last summit is about 50km before the finish.

unfortunally you don't win with Sagan and that you lost the point jersey but 3 riders in the top 10 is very good

Stage 20. The penultimate stage of this years Vuelta a Espana brings the riders over Basque terrain again. The start is in Bilbao and the finish 185km later in Vitoria. The terrain is very hilly, with lots of steep climbs, but the last 46.5km is flat.
img11.imageshack.us/img11/4165/2perfil.jpg

After a small breakaway group, no Euskaltel-riders in it, has been caught, it's polka dot Wout Poels who attacks 3 kilometres under the summit of today's first climb, the Alto de Karabieta. 2 riders react, Laurens ten Dam (Rabobank) and Valerio Agnoli (Liquigas), but they can't keep up with Poels in the ascend. The Dutch rider has a gap of '35 to Ten Dan and Agnoli at the summit and 2'13 to the peloton. 137km to go.
img341.imageshack.us/img341/6731/1kotm1.jpg

Almost immediately after the descend of the Karabieta, the next climb shows up. The Alto de Elosua is a first category climb with the summit 121km before the finish. Of course Poels takes the 16 points. Ten Dam and Agnoli follow at 2'33, Marcus Burghardt at 4'46 and the peloton has taken an off day and is 9'30 behind!
img254.imageshack.us/img254/4319/2kotm2.jpg

The third climb of the day, the Alto de Kanpazar, is the easiest of today's categorized climbs. Poelshas extended his lead and with 73km to go, he is 5'37 in front of Ten Dam and Agnoli, 9'45 to Burghardt and an immense 17'55 to the peloton!
img411.imageshack.us/img411/9527/3kotm3.jpg

In the descend to the town of Elorrio lies the line of the 2nd Intermediate sprint, 66km before the finish. Poels maintains his gigantic lead, 5'23 to Agnoli and Ten Dam and even 19 minutes to the peloton!
img848.imageshack.us/img848/4946/4is2.jpg

Last climb of this Vuelta, the Puerto de Urkiola. 5 kilometres with an average gradient of almost 10%. The summit lies at an altitude of 700 metres.

Poels extends his lead to Ten Dam and Agnoli even more in the ascend of the Puerto de Urkiola. At the summit, 46.4km to go, it is 8'07. The peloton is 17'41 behind.
img853.imageshack.us/img853/2177/5kotm4.jpg

Although he is pretty exhausted, Poels is able to maintain his lead in the last flat part of the stage. With 20km to go, Ten Dam and Agnoli follow at 8'20 and the peloton at 16'16. This one is in the pocket!
img21.imageshack.us/img21/8610/620km.jpg

Wout Poels can start an early celebration in the streets of Vitoria. After a solo of 140 kilometres, he takes his first one of the season and the biggest in his career so far. Also, he assures himself of the KOTM-jersey!
img715.imageshack.us/img715/6512/7finish.jpg

Laurens ten Dam takes 2nd place at 8'21, Valerio Agnoli third at 8'37. There have been no attacks out of the peloton, so they will sprint for the 4th place. But there are no trains being formed and at 2km before the finish, even nobody has started to sprint. So we see this as a given opportunity to regain the points-jersey. Sagan starts to sprint with Gesink in his wheel. They take 4th and 5th place, in front of Galdo, Rojas, Boasson Hagen and Cavendish. Because of this result, Gesink jumps over Cunego in the points-ranking.

Today's winner:
img848.imageshack.us/img848/3891/13poels.jpg

Word from the DS: Wout Poels gave us our 5th stage win this Vuelta with his epic win in Basque country. We even are in the lead for all the rankings, just as in the Giro. Amazing..... We just have to stay on the bike tomorrow in the last stage to Madrid.

The 21st and last stage takes the riders from the Circuito del Jarama to the Plaza Cibeles in the Spanish capitiol Madrid.
img196.imageshack.us/img196/6140/221perfil.jpg

9 riders find each other in the BOTD and are the first ones to pass the finish line for the first time: Fabian Wegmann (Leopard), Mauro Da Dalto (Liquigas), Richie Porte (Saxo Bank), José Luis Roldán (Andalucia), Addy Engels (Quick Step), Bjorn Selander (Radio Shack), Michael Barry (Sky), Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil), Víctor de la Parte (Caja Rural). With 61km to go, they have a 4'30 lead.
img215.imageshack.us/img215/3306/361km.jpg

29km to go, and the lead is brought back to 1'47... Looks like this is going to be a mass sprint.
img705.imageshack.us/img705/2719/429km.jpg

5 riders escape out of the BOTD: Engels, Roldán, Porte, Wegmann and De la Parte. Within the last 10km, the lead is 36 seconds.
img27.imageshack.us/img27/6092/59km.jpg

But then a crash in the peloton, with 10km to go. It happens right behind Robert Gesink, so again the tactic of Gesink being the last man in the sprint train proofs to be the right one.
img265.imageshack.us/img265/3460/6val.jpg

4 riders have to abandon, only 10km before the finish of this Vuelta: Carlos Barredo, Azan Bazayev, Vlad Buts and Mauro Da Dalto. Surprisingly not Vicente Reynes, who almost got cut into two pieces by John Degenkolb in this crash....
img407.imageshack.us/img407/2133/7degenkolb.jpg

The crash causes the peloton to slow down. With 5km to go, the lead of the 5 is still '28. 29 men are in the chase, and we decide to take the lead in the peloton, hoping to bring Sagan the lead.
img198.imageshack.us/img198/8848/85km.jpg

But because none of the other teams cooperate, and we have to let Rob Ruijgh make the pace, the 5 leaders maintain a gap. 2km to go and still 20 seconds, thanks to the hard work of Addy Engels!
img33.imageshack.us/img33/1959/92km.jpg

The 5 leaders start the sprint for the stage win. Víctor De la Parte (Caja Rural) takes the lead. Can he bring the Spanish team their biggest win in their history?
img851.imageshack.us/img851/5286/101km.jpg

No! Leopard's Fabian Wegmann has timed his jump perfectly and takes the win for Leopard, their 2nd stage win this Vuelta. De la Parte gets 2nd, Roldán 3rd and Greipel is the best of the peloton in 4th place. Sagan finishes in 7th. Robert Gesink finishes safely inside the first group and wins the Vuelta, 32 years after the last Dutch Vuelta-win by Joop Zoetemelk. The crash causes some changes in the GC: Damiano Cunego, Joaquim Rodríguez, Denis Menchov, José Herrada and Ezequiel Mosquera loose 1'14, and because of that, Rodríguez also looses his 3rd place in the GC to Luis León Sánchez.

GC: Robert Gesink wins his 2nd GT of the year, an amazing result by the young Dutch man! Cunego rides his best GT after the Giro win in 2004, with 4 stage wins and the 2nd place. Luis León Sánchez is the lucky guy, promoting to 3rd place after the crash in the last stage that caused time loss for Rodríguez.

Positives:

img811.imageshack.us/img811/9155/1robertgesink.jpg
Robert Gesink wins his 2nd GT in a year. First the Giro, now the Vuelta, with 4 stage wins. The reason he won, is that he was the best climber and he minimized the loss in the stages that suited the puncheurs. Depending on the route of next year's Tour, he is aiming for Le Grande Boucle!

img695.imageshack.us/img695/6902/2damianocunego.jpg
7 years after winning the Giro d'Italia, Il Piccolo Principe finally shows again that he can ride a great GC in a GT. He took 4 stage wins, all of them in puncheur-stages (okay, the finish at the Pena Cabarga is also a climbers stage), but really had no chance against Gesink in the higher mountains.

img715.imageshack.us/img715/2930/3lls.jpg
Luis León Sánchez won one stage, but would have to settle with the 4th place. Thanks to a crash in the last stage, he overtook Rodríguez and became the best Spanish rider in 3rd place.

img692.imageshack.us/img692/4043/4woutpoelsf.jpg
Wout Poels kept on attacking and it paid off. Not the 13th place in the GC, but a stage win (stage 20) and the KOTM-jersey.

Dissapointments:

img195.imageshack.us/img195/5458/5joaquimrodriguez.jpg
One stage win in Valdepenas de Jaen and great attacking style almost brought Joaquim Rodríguez a top 3 position in a GC. But..... a crash in the last stage, 10km before the finish put him back in 4th place. Still a good result, but not when you were in 3rd place with only 10km to go....

img832.imageshack.us/img832/3104/6menchov.jpg
being a double winner of the Vuelta, and getting the opportunity to focus completely to the Vuelta.... With that in mind, the 5th place in the GC and no stage wins (3 times 2nd), it's a dissapointment..

img845.imageshack.us/img845/1586/7tejayvangarderen.jpg
Tejay van Garderen is young. He is a great talent and can climb and time trial very well. But when you finish in 57th place in the GC and never had a chance for a stage win, people start to doubt about the talent. But he's young....

img213.imageshack.us/img213/133/8euskaltel.jpg
An entire team, Euskaltel - Euskadi, was very dissapointing. No stage wins (2nd place for Nieve in the 13th stage was the best result), and the best placed ride in the GC was Nieve on place 20. Okaywith that, but when the Vuelta returns to your own Basque country for the first time in 30 years, and the riders won't or can't even attack...... The region with the world's craziest cycling fans deserved more than that....

What an amazing Vuelta! Gesink, Vanendert and Poels all did really well. Great work, try to keep it up for a long time.

@ all: Thanks a lot! It truelly was a domination, but the field wasn't as string as in the Tour de France.
Next season will be completely on extreme, so probably a lot less wins then.

The following reports of the last races of the year will be a little shorter, except for the World Tour races (I have finished the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec already, with again good results). Then I'll probably take a little break (not for long, as it gets a bit addictive Wink), to make a goos season review, transfers overview (and change some teams/transfers), before the 2012 season starts.

But first the autumn classics!!
