South Australia, stage 3
i.imgur.com/wIMMtYX.png
The second chance for the sprinters comes with the third stage. Apart from the very short bump, some kilometers before the finish, nothing seems capable of keeping the generally expected bunch sprint away.

But after the neutralization of the breakaway the pace is upped in a brutal way. Even the short climb hurts quite a lot of riders. Once more our riders are nowhere to be seen near the front. Eventually Barbero would be our top finisher. Disappointing top finisher though in 16th.
i.imgur.com/zfyph0w.png
Australia's champion Michael Matthews won the sprint by a truly huge margin, which allowed him to take back some time and move into the top 5. As Peter Sagan didn't take any boni seconds Matthews might have secured a slim chance to take the overall win at Old Wilunga Hill.

Guess what? Yes, one more chance for the faster guys at stage four. The category one climb may have been placed too far from the finish to help determine the stage result . But who knows what happens, right?
i.imgur.com/MX4kAvC.png
Finally we managed to get a guy into the breakaway, but the story of Zardini wasn't a very succesfull one. He had to let the others go way before they tackled the final climb. None of them would survive though.
i.imgur.com/spGojI1.png
In the end it was the quick Dutchman Moreno Hofland who narrowly outsprinted Caleb Ewan and Michael Matthews in the sunny streets of Tanunda. And at last we achieved a slightly noteworthy stage result.

South Australia, stage 5
i.imgur.com/KStCJmU.png
The fifth stage is the undisputed queen stage of this race. Two climbs of Old Wilunga Hill and the winner of the race should be known already, even with the traditional criterium style stage of tomorrow in Adelaide.
i.imgur.com/V5L39GI.png
After a first ascent, LottoNL-Jumbo's André Looij has already secured the KoM jersey, but he doesn't stand a chance against a chasing pack. Then we still had Ruben Guerreiro and Carlos Barbero near the front.
i.imgur.com/qdsk7LH.png
Andrea Fedi's the first who ups the pace, and everyone struggles to follow. For a moment it seems he won't allow anyone to come back...
i.imgur.com/mTVwkuT.png
But eventually it's not him but fellow Italian Davide Villella who times his move perfectly. He even opened up a time gap between himself and Peter Sagan and Jasper Stuyven. That way he moves into the leader jersey too as Carlos Barbero jumps to 11th place in the GC thanks to his stage finish just outside the top ten on this tricky Australian climb.

South Australia, final stage
i.imgur.com/JvuGhK8.png
The final stage in the Adelaide streets offered one very last chance for sprinters, but quite often a breakaway makes it to the line in the final stage of a stage. Hoping for more, Zurlo joined today's breakaway.

He was strong enough as he didn't even manage to follow the others on pan flat roads. The remaining riders gave the chasing pack a very hard time. With only 3 kilometers to go their story was over as well.
i.imgur.com/ELq3ogg.png
Suddenly the pack was shattered and Barbero was near the front! He dug deep to stay with Fernando Gaviria and Elia Viviani. Could he hold on? Was he on his way to a last minute jump in the GC standings?
i.imgur.com/XYr5lTu.png
Well in the end he had too dig to deep to follow them and had nothing left for the sprint. Barbero came home in seventh as Gaviria won the stage. Several existing time gaps weren't confirmed. That way Astana's Villella took the overall win while Barbero narrowly missed WT points.

Trofeo Palma (1.1)
Baleares
i.imgur.com/Yl3B7KJ.png
Trofeo Palma traditionally is the only race at the island which perfectly suits the real sprinters. We would be happy with a repeat of last year's result, which was a good 2nd place for our sprinter Manuel Martínez.
i.imgur.com/hAkpmiC.png
The day started with an entirely Spanish breakaway as Katusha, Burgos and Movistar sent a guy out front. Afterwards no attacks were allowed.
i.imgur.com/c36qXKP.png
José Gonçalves tried a counter attack with three laps to go, but soon after he had joined the initial breakaway he paid for his effort already.
i.imgur.com/Z2Hm3Es.png
With our first plan failed we tried to set up our sprint train. Federico Zurlo, Aridani Tinajero and Manuel Martínez tried to guide Carlos Barbero towards the front of the pack as the escapees were cooked.
i.imgur.com/ZGW1Bbn.png
We fought a hard battle against Dimension Data's train for Juan José Lobato, but for a moment it seemed like we'd be able to overpower it when Tinajero accelerated. But then a mistake was made as the next and penultimate man Manul Martínez came a tad late with his move.
i.imgur.com/2exQ8C4.png
That way our riders got caught from behind and Bora's Nicola Ruffoni sprinted to the win, being only narrowly faster than Lobato. We have two guys in the top 10 but so much more could've come from this race.

Trofeo Alcudia (1.1)
Baleares
i.imgur.com/QPYfjb8.png
The second race brought us to the very north of the island. Contrary to last year's edition, this time it didn't include any noteworthy difficulties. Only a strong breakaway or a strong sea breeze could prevent a sprint.
i.imgur.com/y1z93d5.png
The breakaway included two Spaniards and a Brit, among whom our former team mate José Luis Campos. They enjoyed the area about the seaside resort of Alcúdia, but they didn't even come close to a win.
i.imgur.com/6vSdatx.png
During the preparation of the sprint, Roompot's Sjoerd Van Ginneken had accelerated and that way our train couldn't wait. This very situation included leaving Carlos Barbero behind, as he had failed to follow the wheel of Martínez. Federico Zurlo tried a leadout for the Uruguayan.
i.imgur.com/fp9zi9a.png
Van Ginneken made it to the line and took his very first win with the pro's. Behind him, Manuel Martínez beat Enrique Sanz in the bunch sprint and took second. Another missed chance for us here at Mallorca.

i.imgur.com/TX9IY3u.png
The third race kept the riders near the very north of the island. For the first time the route suited the real climbers as the pack faced a profile full of bumps ending with a summit finish at the Mirador d'es Colomer.
i.imgur.com/onP8HTr.png
Hector Saez represented our team in the breakaway, accompanied by Katusha's Sergey Firsanov and Sky's climber Jonathan Symons. The three had a maximum gap of almost 6 minutes, but then at the longest climb of the day Sky of all teams started closing it. With only 15 km left, the story of this breakaway was over, as Great Britain's Symons was the very last to be reeled in. A climb to the firehouse would be decisive.

We didn't manage to keep a leader near the front as both Ion Izagirre and Eder Chávarri were watching from the second row, let's stay tenth position. Eder Chávarri was the only who could still gain some ground.
i.imgur.com/ceHl8nc.png
Fellow Spaniard Jordi Simón had the strongest acceleration of them all and won the race for his team Katusha. Thanks to a relatively good sprint, Chávarri achieved a solid but far from spectacular 8th position.

Trofeo Soller (1.1)
Baleares

The fourth and penultimate race led us towards Soller, a seaside resort home to the famous Orange Express. This very railway was built with the profits of the orange trade back in the twenties of the 20th century.

No riders in the break of the day for us this time as King Lok Cheung, Patrick Olesen and Giacomo Tomio were representing Burgos BH, Cult Energy and Cannondale respectively. The pack kept the amount of riders at 3 to keep control over the group more easily in the mountains.

Shortly after the descent of the second climb, Evgeny Shalunov and Diego Rubio tried to sneak away, but LottoNL-Jumbo made sure the initial breakaway didn't get its reinforcements. This could mean their Colombian leader Esteban Chaves felt plenty of panache in his legs?

Former French champion Arthur Vichot set the pace at the first part of the longest climb, but he couldn't to drop too many riders. The trio out front survived for now. They tackled the second part with a gap of 1'.

That's when FDJ's Léo Vincent and Giant's Christian Mager tried to anticipate. Together, they attacked from the pack and left all escapees behind. With only a very short climb and the subsequent descent to the line left they had a small gap of less than half a minute, not enough.

Sadly for them, good old Purito Rodríguez struck at his terrain. The Spanish veteran fluttered away from the bunch and finished the two attackers out front in the descent. Our team never really contested for the win but eventually we would finish with two riders in the top ten.
