Degano down.. Doesn't look too good.
He's out of the race, That's a big blow to the one Team which has been surrounding my learning of the sport. Pro cycling isn't too big in Australia. I discovered it through Pro Cycling Manager 2007 and managing Team Barloworld. Which made it to the tour as a wildcard entry. They are a continental Team, albeit they may get a promotion this year, currently second in the European Tour.
I was pleasantly suprised to see Rob Hunter sprinting it out up front and I can appreciate his disappointment in not taking out the 4th stage...so close.
Robert Hunter is the only sprinter left in the race now for the Team. With Degano , it'll possibly hamper his sprinting. Having said that though, considering he's degano was the only other sprinter in the side, to be 4th in the points table, I would imagine is an outstanding achievement for a sprinter with very limited team support in sprints.
Degano's loss won't be felt immediately by the team I wouldn't imagine. The rest of their Team tend to be less suited to sprint heavy stages so I'm looking forward to seeing how well the Team do in the Alps and who knows, they may even get a stage win, which I would expect is a rarety for a wildcard team entrant in the major tours like the TDF(Still think of T***** defence force when I see that abbreviation, over hear we have the ADF - Australian Defence Force - yes that's how new I am to this sport).
Anyway, thanks for reading and glad to be part of such a friendly community. I can't believe how I had not discovered this sport in past 30 something years. |

I'm sure Hunter will be fine just following other sprinters' wheels. I also hope that Robbie can capture a stage win.

Was it just me, or did Hunter not start sprinting. He seemed content just to sit behind someone's wheel, when he could have taken the win.
And poor Cavendish, yet more problems

I think Hunter tried to go but people got in front of him. In more Barloworld news: Geraint took 15th yesterday!

The mountains are yet to begin, but were already a sprinter down. Oscar Freire is out due to a sore back.

Rasmussen is on the attack
EDIT: and the yellow jersey dropped
looks like there was a bordure or something...there's like 6 CSCs back there...

quite a good group formed now
Rasmussen, Savoldelli, Flecha, Jose Ivan Gutierrez, Fofonov, Vaugrenard and some others now have 30secs approx. (not too much, but a bit)
Rasmussen took full points on the 1st climb, with Chavanel only taking 2pts
Cancellara is now 1"30 back on the leaders, with Boonen in the maillot jaune group |

Not good news for him or his leaders, he would have been of good use, obviously he could get back on but it may take a lot of energy if he isn't seriously injured anyway.
hope chicken can get back up there he's a great climber and would probably be the best stage racer in the world if his TT was even half decent |

he dropped back on choice. there's no way the peloton would let him go on a break

I honestly don't think he's that good. actually, I wouldn't rank him in the top5 of best climbers in this Tour |

Rasmussen is overrated imo, even if he went for the GC he's just like Piepoli...loses too much time on TT's
Btw I'm rooting for Tankink and Fofonov in the group, this is the kind a stage in which a break can make it (first stage mostly delivers a surprising winner: See Mercado last year)

remember 2005?
he won so much time in the break that he jumped miles ahead of everyone except for armstrong.
so he had to stick with the GC guys on the climbs from then on. he kept getting dropped. |

ok, are you sure Rasmussen has dropped back
128km - Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues), Fabian Wegmann (Gerolsteiner), and Martin Elminger (AG2R) have caught the leaders! The addition of this trio makes this an incredibly interesting escape group, and the lead is up to a full six minutes. Lots of climbers in this bunch, and lots of contenders for the polka-dot jersey, but the favourite Michael Rasmussen could very well dominate on the three approaching climbs as long as the escape bunch can stay away.
from eurosport, or are they just a bit behind, or just plain wrong |

definitely these 4 in no particular order.
choosing a fifth I think is unfair as there are a few at about the same level. different stages suit different riders, so that makes it even more unfair. for instance, Evans has fabulous stamina, so any stage that is hard right from the start will see him right up there with those four...etc. |
