You may know him from his reportage on Euskaltel, titled Gora Euskadi!, or his work at EPIC NetApp, well – he yet again makes another return: Journalist X is here to give you details about the road season. He’ll write for the team website and thus give focused racing details on everybody on my team. This keeps work off my shoulders and keeps more time for training, but don’t worry: When there are important things to share with you, I’ll always be your man to tell you the good news.
This also comes as a pleasant development, since l I have been a bit narrow and narcissistic in my coverage at times. I want to give you a bigger picture. And who knows, maybe one day I can hire Journalist X as my personal biographer? (hint hint…)
News From The Road, January
It’s the year one after Sagan, and our new sponsor Citigroup – Cannondale had the best start possible. With guys like Tejay Van Garderen, Thomas De Gendt and Lawson Craddock on your team-side now, we have some serious firepower for Grand Tours. Include Ivan Basso and the winner of last year’s Maglia Azzura at the Giro, Damiano Caruso, and we’re definitely fit for the mountains. But we’ll be ready for my specialties, the classics? Time will tell, in any case it’s great to see our team in winning ways so early on.
Citigroup: Off to a great start!
With two victories, the team started well into the new season. Marco Marcato won the bunch sprint on stage 1, and Elia Viviani followed his example on the next day, by taking a stage win too. The team had various changes the next days, but the many breakaway wins didn’t allow to increase the win total.
Marco Marcato's day in the leader jersey was wisely spent
The Santos Tour Down Under was won by Ben Hermans, after a great performance up Mount Kocziousko. Best Citigroup rider was Marco Marcato on fifth.

Journalist X, Citigroup-Cannondale, Press Release, 31st January 2015
There is also a new team on the radar: Fernando Alonso and Paolo Bettini have talked a lot over the past year, it’s good to see them now on Pro Continental level finally. Team Alonso will be sponsored by Ferrari, and with that kind of huge cash, they of course have already quite some illustrious names on their paycheck: Daniel Moreno, Julian Arredondo, Haimar Zubeldia, Alessandro Ballan and Luca Paolini are just some of the riders that want to achieve great things on this new team. Their first victory has already been achieved by Mikel Landa at the Tour de San Luis, where he won stage 3. Team Alonso - Ferrari will be one of the hottest candidates for promotion this year alongside IAM Cycling.
With all off the CX racing I almost forgot the road team changed to Citigroup - Cannondale.
-- The team don't look as strong as the previous year, who knows with some bad luck in the GTs the team could be fighting out a relegation scrap! Raphael will have to up his game.
So, after a week at home after CX, I met the team managers and they all seemed very motivated for the new season. I was in the right swing although I didn’t have time to really rest for a couple of months. It’s likely I’ll go insane at some later point in the season, but first I want some wins and some more wins.
My schedule for this season includes following races.

So, quite a lot to race, but we’ll get it done. My coaches, my dad and the staff obviously see my potential for one-day classics, but they also like for me to support the team leaders. For instance, I’ll be assisting T.J. Van Garderen for his goal at the Amgen Tour of California, while helping once again Moser aim for stardom at the Ardennes classics. The pecking order for the flanders classics isn’t finale yet, but it’s likely I’ll have to race for Gatto, and may be granted a free role in one or two races of my choosing.
I hope I stay motivated throughout 2015, I feel like this could hugely back-fire...
See you at Omloop!
News From The Road, February 2015
Citigroup, Mid-February 2015: Stage win for Van Garderen, success continues!
At the Tour Mediterraneen, Citigroup-Cannondale’s new signing, T.J. Van Garderen got his first stage win at the Time Trial on stage 2. He came in third overall, behind winner Nicolas Roche (TST) and Tour de France Champion Alejandro Valverde (MOV).
At the Herald Sun Tour, the team was on the way to score some nice rankings, until Thomas De Gendt dropped out with injury on the last day. It is not clear if De Gendt recovers in time for his first season goal of 2015, Tirreno-Adriatico, but we certainly hope so.
At the Volta ao Algarve, the team tried its best with stage wins, but was unfortunately not successful. Cameron Wurf finished the race 18th.

"It’s a little bit scary when Contador attacks." - Tommy V
@Vali: It's definitely more packed than in the first year, but he's 22, soon 23 years old. I guess it's time to move one up, we'll see how he can take it.
Flanders' Opening Weekend
Citigroup-Cannondale proves ready for the pave!
There is seemingly no reason to be sad of the departure of Peter Sagan, as the team, formerly known as Cannondale, picks up right where it has left off: In winning ways.
At the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the team was long-time featured in the breakaway with two riders. Kristian Koren and Daniel Oss played a great tactic and really showed off their new jersey in the Belgian region. Unfortunately with attacks from Greg Van Avermaet, Tom Boonen and the like, the race had a high pace to it, and the storming rain didn’t help much either. It was a classic Omloop Het Neuwsblad, a great sign of the things yet to come this season.
The race was won by Alexander Kristoff, who caught the Sebastian Langeveld on the line. The Garmin-Sharp rider was one of the last riders to attack and slip away at 10 kilometers left and he nearly would have made it but got beat by the line. Our rider for the bunch sprint was Oscar Gatto, who got protected by Raphael Visconti. Gatto achieved a 8th place.

More successful, was the team’s next day. Because the team had missed the breakaway leading from Kuurne to Bruxelles… and back to Kuurne, the team focused its energy on protecting its sprinters. Marco Marcato and Fabio Sabatini were Citigroup`s guys, and Visconti and Koren did a great job at helping them over the pave and keeping clear of crashes and from the harsh wind.
It was a very active race in the last 40 kilometers with various attacks from the top favourites such as Boonen or Vanmarcke, but it was eventually destined to be a bunch sprint. There was a familiar picture for the former Cannondale riders, when Oscar Gatto lead-out for Marco Marcato and Fabio Sabatini, and on their wheel was a certain SKY rider… yes, it was Peter Sagan. Almost like in old times.
But Sagan had maybe wasted his energy too early, and his equally dangerous rivals Kristoff and Degenkolb started from a bit too far back, and thus the Citigroup train was in pure motion, as Gatto lead into the finale kilometer and Marcato started off his sprint and claimed the victory. After 2014, where Peter Sagan won Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne, the team continues its winning streak here and makes it two in two. With two victories so far in this season, Marco Marcato is in some fantastic shape!

Oh, and the good news don’t stop here. Elia Viviani, also a stage winner at Santos Tour Down Under this year, won the GP di Lugano. The 24th February might end up as the favourite day of the year for the team in the future.
Journalist X, Citigroup-Cannondale Press Release, Flemish Opening Week 2015Edited by Shonak on 07-05-2014 10:55
"It’s a little bit scary when Contador attacks." - Tommy V
