Just found some highlights of the Cipressa - am I right in thinking that was Ciolek being dropped on the climb then seemingly making it back on the descent?

Just re-watched it. No direct indication that it was Ciolek, and Sbaragli finished 53rd, a position matching to the amount of riders still in front.

Watching back again I'm fairly sure it was him going off the back relatively early on the Cipressa in which case wow...
re-watched the sprint tonight. a good overhead shot. cioleks sprinting form is so much tighter and controlled than Sagans in this instance its cool to watch. the german keeps his body really low and all the power seems to come from the legs. sagans really hammering down, using his whole body, less aero too i guess!
top 10 of all time in no particular order, not including the cannibal cause hes automatically #1:
-Gemininani -Nencini -Anquetil -Coppi
-Kelly -Hinault -Zabel -Bettini -Rebellin -Magni
..and honorable mention to Tom Simpson whos career was cut short.
Top 5 noobs most likely to tear it up this season:
-Phinney -Moser -TJ -Guardini -DURBO!

Yeah, good observations, Sagan has this brutal power pedaling style of a sprint. Also because of that he damaged lot of bicycles in his MTB career, broking them in half. But it usually brings results also on the road.
I think he did everything he could on Sunday, because Ciolek would never gave up his wheel. Maybe if he had waited for hundred meters more, Ciolek would have not enough time to overtake him, look how long it took him. 50 meters less and Sagan won. Usually he wins on timing, this time he went too early, Chavanel launched him with his try.
To my surprise, i am still very happy with Peter gaining second place, First, he can learn from this mistake. Second, he cannot be with his head in skies, when everybody is saying about him he can win any race he wants (because he cant, nobody can). And last, i like Ciolek and MTN too.
Ciolek was the smartest, Sagan,Chavanel,Stannard and Cancellara were probably the strongest, good sign for RvV.

Quite true. Though from yesterday's race, I admire Sagan much more than Ciolek. Both have performed well, but Sagan really stepped up and did what he had to do. Ciolek only had to follow, follow, follow, sprint, celebrate.

Well he would not have chance to suceed in different way, he should send gift-basket to Sagan, who caught the Chavanel,Stannard duo (together with Cancellara) and gave him perfect lead-out in the end.

That‘s why I said no direct indication. The commentary is indirect, because they just assume it‘s Ciolek.
Direct indication would be bib on the jersey, bib on the bike, obvious difference in body height or riding style to the team mates left, or simply a clear shot of his face.
Nothing of that is distiguishable here, and they probably assumed it was Ciolek because no other MTN rider seemed good enough to still be around for them.
And dropping that early on Cipressa, but easily following Sagan on Poggio (even Cancellara struggled more) is basically impossible.
Cheers, shame it's poor quality footage as the guy looks right at the camera bike as it overtakes him and it looks like it might be Ciolek but I can't say 100%. The only other reference I found was an entry on the Cycling News live feed that suggests the same thing but wouldn't treat that as gospel for obvious reasons!

I'll ask him the next time I see him...
100% it wasn't Ciolek getting dropped, the commentary was all over the place due to what was going on as both Chavanel and Phinney were both called as pulling out and yeah they obviously were both there

Can't agree with you matey, it was a helluva mess but its a classic and should have been run, cancelling it would have helped nobody.

Meh, they made it a 130km long race, pretty much meaning it wasn't a Milano - Sanremo anymore, so cancelling it would have been the best option, and that's what they should have done. Fortunately it turned out to be a quite entertaining race, so I won't complain much.
