186km face the riders today, in a searing 34 degrees centigrade. Everyone expects big things from Peter Sagan once more today, but the punchers may be eyeing up that final climb, just 10km from the finish line...
The peloton never put up much of a fight, and after just 4km 3 riders had opened a 1'27 gap. They were, Gretsch(Nintendo), Vandousselare(Magners) and Docker(Dominoes)
2 further riders bridged the gap - Vandborg(Triks Custom) and Bardet(Bulgari-Inditex) with 167km to ride.
Sony-Ericsson, Cwyru Wales and Tap-Michelin clearly wanted the sprint primes today, they refused to let the gap get to 2minutes and seemed determined to reel them in
At the first sprint prime, it's an easy win for australian Mitch Docker, with Vandousselare 2nd and Gretsch 3rd. Vandborg dropped away from the break just beforethe sprint and now the gap is being allowed to rise
with 110km left to ride the 5man break is back together once more. the lead has risen to 5minutes, clearly the day was too hot for the peloton to maintain their early pace.
50km to ride and the gap is starting to melt now, just 3'16 with Sagans team marshalling on the front. With the break doomed, it should be an interesting finale!
22.7km 1'47 the gap, and with a tough hilly profile for the final kilometres, the break may not be dead yet, they only need to get over the days final climb with a gap, and it's downhill all the way to the line!
17km and now the break will really have to fight as 3 teams are involved in the chase. Clearly Sony-Ericsson are backing Theo Bos to manage the final climb, as they've just sent half the team to the relay! Gap is 1'21
15km... Hardly the big goal now, but Docker claims the final sprint of the day ahead of Bardet and Vandousselare. They are 3.7km from the final summit, and have a 1'06 gap, can tehy make it last?
12km... The peloton are closing fast and young Bardet doesn't feel like giving up just yet, he's making an attack but will he be able to hang on for the final 11km?
10km... Vandousselare is first over the summit and begins the descent towards the line, the peloton however are almost back, so perhaps the sprinters teams have timed this catch to perfection!
9km... They never bothered to fight it on the descent, simply sitting up and waiting to be caught. now the sprinters will have to fight for a spot from which to race for the finish line
4km... Finally the trains form, Sony no the left have Larsson-Férnandez-Bos and Sagan sits behind. Meanwhile on the right we have Tap with Pirés-Pinto-Hinault. Behind them is a 2 man train from TCW consisting of Thomas-Impey, and both Pelucchi(Bulgari) and Vaitkus(Pervyj) are fighting for that wheel.
2700m... The 2 big sprinters lost the wheel of the Sony Train, Bos and Sagan seem to be out of it with 2.7 to go. Out in front Pinto is providing the perfect leadout for Hinault, whilst Thomas is trying to close the gap for Impey!
1600m... Tap capitulated after looking perfect, and Bos has re-discovered his team mates wheel. Impey is the furthest forward of the sprinters, but his leadout Thomas must be all but spent by now.
1000m... Impey and Vaitkus are out in front right now, but both Bos and Sagan are starting to launch. They need to close 15bike lengths, but Sagan almost did that in 600m yesterday!
300m... Sagan is coming! he's second to Impey whose starting to run out of steam, the names for the top 5 look to be Impey, Sagan, Gallopin, Haedo, Vaitkus. Bos meanwhile has disappeared from view, it seems fighting his way back to the leadout was too much of a strain on the track-sprinter.
150m... Sagan has dominated it once more. In-n-Out may get a 1-2 here with Haedo vs Gallopin. Impey meanwhile hit a wall and will have to settle with missing the podium.
Sagan 1st, Haedo 2nd, Gallopin 3rd. Impey holds on for fourth, but amazingly, Iglinskiy manages to take 5th giving In-n-Out 1,3,5 on the stage!!
