If you lose against Ferrari and Guardini, you'll lose against Kittel, Greipel and Sagan for sure, especially without a proper leadout. No way he can get the green jersey. I'm expecting him to go home once he realises that so that Boasson Hagen can go for his own chance.

Rolling Eyes

One or two losses, and some people are so quick to ignore all of his wins.

When someone wins a lot, people try to find weaknesses and as soon as they see them they point them out and try to prove that he's not as good as the other say. So for any big rider any mistake will look twice or thrice bigger than a victory, especially for people that don't like him.
The only rider that can beat him in a proper flat sprint is Greipel.

Exactly. Particularly as Cav's personality/attitude makes it easy for many to dislike him.

No Vien, I am not English but how amusing that your first response is to call me biased, when your posts clearly suggest your dislike of Cavendish!

Plus, you seem to have the wrong idea of what constitutes the best sprinter. You can be as fast a sprinter as you like, but if you don't win, you are not the best sprinter.

The only Sprinter at the moment who consistently wins again and again at the highest level is Cavendish - that's why he is the best sprinter in the peloton. 9 GT stage wins in 2009, 8 GT stage wins in 2010, 7 GT stage wins in 2011 and already 3 GT stages wins this year can't be ignored!

Oops, I meant British Pfft

"Best sprinter" is and will always stay an opinion, because it can depend on many factors (results/top speed/placing etc.) I'm not claiming that anyone else is a better sprinter, I'm not saying Cavendish isn't the best sprinter either. You are claiming that it's a fact that Cav is the best sprinter in the world, that's not my point. Who cares about him being the best sprinter because he won a lot of races the past years. I am talking about how he'll do in the 2012 Tour de France, and I think his results will be weaker than people expect there due to the given reasons: Hype about his family, lack of support and his focus on the Olympics.

From your first post though, if he even wins 1 stage, it seems like he will be exceeding your lowly expectations of him Wink

I dont buy that any sort of family hype will affect him - it didnt in the Giro. Sounds like youre more just fed up that the cycling media like to bring it up! The lack of a strong team built around Cav should give other sprinters more of an opportunity to go into the sprint in an ideal position, but Cav has shown many times that he can still win without a leadout.

The interesting thing will be to see how much his Olympics focus does affect his topspeed. We can't take the Ster ZLM sprints as definitive proof, but we will know a few sprint stages in. In the past he has been able to win sprints quite comfortably at times so a slight reduction in speed does not necesarilly mean he will be beaten.

Cavendish is a top sprinter. Nobody should say anything other then that. Getting beated by a extremly fast and talented sprinter like Guardini can happen.
I think this Tour will be interesting in the sprints because of the very strong competition and the lack of a sole team that stands out.

Interesting news article for me as he states he has lost some top end and his competition is arguably closer than in recent years so should be some exciting finishes in store, hopefully Cav will win his fair share of them Pfft

Exactly. Cavendish was and still is the best sprinter, but the way HTC/Columbia were riding for him, it was impossible to beat him.

This year, though, Sky aren't as focused on sprints as HTC were in the previous years so that could be a minus for Cavendish and give the others a better chance. Still, Cavendish is the big favorite and the man to beat when it comes to a mass sprint finish.

Yup. Cavendish one on one is nearly unbeatable still, but at least whitout his usual 5-6 men leadout train he will have more difficulties.

Scarponi, Bertagnolli and Visconti called before CONI:

A ban for Scarponi would end his career, surely?

Visconti already had a talk with them and he's feeling pretty good about it.

He has already been baned before. So yeah, pretty much. But then again that should have happened with Di Luca too and yet somehow he returned to cycling with a WT team.

Patrik Sinkewitz is cleared by the German court. That's surprising. The decision will probably be appealled by NADA though.

You've got to praise the carabinieri and CONI for their fight against doping, but meanwhile the Italian federation welcomes Pozzato at their training camp, waiting for the outcome of his case.
I figured a conservative approach would be the rule, but with Bettini as your manager, what else could be expected ?

The Schleck brothers are negotiating with German sponsors to start a new German team. They've already found a co-sponsor.

After the way the last one went (making promises they couldn't keep and ending up making quite a few staff unemployed) the only staff they'll be able to recruit are either people who are desperate or people who've always worked with them

Cav wanting a team dedicated to him, and the Aussies saying they wanted to work for Goss.

It's feasible, but unlikely. Although if Sky send him so few helpers to the tour next year then I can see him bailing.

He could go and work with the Schlecks, just to feel even more ailenated. Pfft

The fact thats its just an aussie site saying it probably indicated theyre trying to big up their home team and make them sound better

This. I can't imagine any team turning down Cavendish offering himself to ride for you, unless you hadn't enough budget left for his wage, in which case you'd look for another sponsor as crazy.
