If he says 1:16:22 then I guess he means 1:16:22. Maybe he has been a runner for some years without trying the half marathon distance.

In June last year he wrote about his PBs in some shorter distances, for instance 34:46 in 10 km.

Okay I didn't know that he was such an expectional 10k runner, 34:46 is amazing. And 1:16:22 is still absolutely wow for your first HM. Gratz ssssj. Pretty amazing times, keep it up! I'm envious!

Yeah, didn't see that either. 1:16 makes sense then. And that with only 18 years of age. Thats a damn good average speed per km. I should've never stopped doing sport. What was I thinking? Sad

I was running when I was a teenager and when I was like 14 or 15 or so I managed 38 minutes on 10 k and also 18 on 5 km. But then I had to stop running because of growing pains for a few years.
Now I'm struggling to make 48 on 10 km and 24 on 5 km. Also, I have to train so long to get in shaoe (while when young, you do one run and you're back) and when I can't train for 3 weeks or so, I'm helplessly back to zero, so to speak Pfft

I'm getting too old for this .. stuff.

My main discipline were the 1000m though, where my best time was 2:46, I think. Normally I was a Decathlon-guy, but I couldn't really compete in most other areas.
I was 14 back then. Then I stopped doing stuff until this year.

I'm sorry to say, but: Wow both you guys are fucking dumb for stopping as teenagers when you had times like these.

2:46 is just simply crazy, and you wern't even close to your prime then.

It's not easy to continue something, you have no fun in. But I would love to be at some competitions again. My running style is a region-classic. Grin Imagine Mollema running :lol:

I was a bit frustrated with my club back then. I didn't want to be put in the 4x100m team, as well as I didn't wanted to take part at the throwing disciplines as well as the high-jump.(I suck in it, because a bad jump in 5th grade made my back pretty stiff. Cycling helps me to bend my back again, but I have to do some special exercises, otherwise, I couldn't sit on my bike. I also have the stem facing upwards.)

Haha I know.
But I had growing pains, my knees hurt for years whenever I started running at a high pace.
Maybe I could've done something about it (see a specialised doctor or so) but I didn't think of it. When you're young, there's a lot to do Pfft

Now it's sad to know my 14 year old self would completely destroy me running but oh well. That punk could never play all those musical instruments so in your face, 14-year old me. Cool

I am only able to run 800m in 2:20. Compared to last year I have improved my 10km time from 34:46 to 34:33 on a slightly more difficult course. The half marathon course could have been more flat. It was also windy that day. Probably I would be able to run a half marathon in 1:15 if it would have been less hills and not so windy. I was surprised over finishing in 23rd place even thought the time was just what I expected. I wonder at what age I will run my first marathon (I am 18 years old now).

Seems like you have a unique endurance, I'm really impressed!

Also, nice to see someone else in this country in my age who actually likes to run, although I'm not near as good as you. Wink

As promised last week I want to write here about my running history.

I wrote this because I always loved to follow this thread and especially miggi's and Jseadog's blogs so I thought that some of you might also be interested in reading about my running.

The Beginnings


I started running when I was 9. Mostly 3 km runs without any time measurement. The first official run were all 10 km. With 10, I debuted with a time of 47 minutes and could cut it down to 44 minutes in the next two or three years. The only training i did for it was one or two runs before each "official" run so pretty much nothing but of course I could profit from regular football training.

Despite being asked by a running coach to join his club, I stopped running when I was 13/14 because I always got knee problems from running. I only played football in that time although my football skills were rather limited. Even today I still play football despite it stops me from getting a bit better in running.

Only when I was 15 I started again at some local city runs (10km in 42 min) and a school competitions and after my current coach contacted me after i turned 16, i did for the first time ever some proper training. (spring 2012)

Club Training (2012-)


It was also the first time ever that I started at shorter distances like 5000m or 800m. My personal records in the 2012 season were 2:14 (800m) and 18:38 (5000m).

Steady improvements came over the next month and years and I focussed more and more on the 800m which I developed some hate-love-relationship for.

In spring and fall i also did some cross country events every year since I joined my club. We participated in state and national championships and while I never got into good shape before the NC (mainly because I did not focussed on it at all and was most of the time only there to fill the 3-man team or be reserve for it) my sweatest victory came from cross country Westfalian ( = State ) Championships where we won the team competition one year.

After finishing school last season I could spend many, many hours on the track. At that time I was training up to 6-7 times per week. It turned into my by far best season so far as I ran a 2:00 (800m) despite having to run alone for the whole second round and I finished the season with a 17:00 (5000m).

Later in the year, I started studying + working and decided to sacrifize my indoor season as I wanted to prepare properly for my first ever ( university ) exams and I was not in the mood to do much indoor events. Of course, I continued training but when one normally goes into competition mode after Christmas, i went into a season break. But what I originially planned as 3-4 weeks of non-training turned into a 7-week break as I went skiing for a week after exams and got ill shortly after my return.

2015


After such a long break I had to catch up a lot to my team mates but eventually I got into a good shape until start of June. My absolute number one goal for this season was to get my PB down to at least 1:59 on 800m although I aimed for a 1:57 in hindsight. And in start of June I did my first season start with a 2:02 and was very optimistic for the season.

Unfortunatelly, that would not last long. A week later, in the last and promotion deciding playoff match with my football team, I had to give up with an injury in my left thigh. This injury took me out for way too long. In the end I had to stop for nearly 2 month which obviously, resulted in the end of my summer season.

After I mostly recovered from it (well, i still feel it until today when sprinting) I decided to make a cut and improve my basic endurance so that I could run fast 5km times this fall. Until now, I only ran a single 10km run this year two weeks ago (37:20) but the 6-7km split times where somewhat promising.

What's next?


Next 5000m chance is actually later tonight. It's exactly one year after I set my current PB on 5000m and on the same course so it will be interesting to compare the times.
And tomorrow I head into a week long training camp.

Not sure what I will focus this winter on but for once I am not really in the mood for another 800m season. Perhaps it will be a 1500m or 3000m season but i could also go for a proper cross country season. Didnt decided yet.
Only thing I know is that i want to test myself on the Westfalian U23 cross county next month.

I just gave it a go yesterday and started my first run for the last 3 or 4 years. Only 6km, but on our local Hill. Also offroad. It was pretty nasty. I ran with my dad. He is preparing for his next HM, but he isn't pretty fit atm, so I thought, I could run with him now. The pace was totally fine, until I got cramps in both thighs. I needed to walk a few metres from there. Also I blew it on the final Hilltop, bonking at my maximum pulse. I'm pretty disappointed with that run, because some of my joints and my lower and upper back made problems, after that short of a distance.

Nice going Shonak. Smile Strange eats, but I would prefer ice cream fore running to stodgy bread and a load of other food. Besides it is better to have energy to burn than to be running on empty!

Talking of running food, going to have to be eating plenty more carrots for twilight running: I do enjoy a good 10-12k just as the sun goes down. Is the season for that. Cool
