Stage 21
Last stage finishing in spanish capital Madrid was only formality. Riders could enjoy easy ride after 3 weeks of hard work. Only unpleasant thing happended few kilometres before finish, when several riders including JJ Cobo (8th overall) hit the ground and lost several minutes...and Cobo TOP10 place. Tyler Farrar dominated in sprint ahead of Hushovd and Bozic.

We let strong spanish team control the pace from beginning as I found only 3 Italian in good shape before WC - Garzelli, Paolini and Cunego. All others were pretty useless during hard race. Group of 5 - Boasson Hagen, Barbosa, A.Schleck, Casar and Kostyuk - built up to 4 minutes advantage, but were caught about 60km before end. Valverde, Sastre and Contador worked hard for Rodriguez and Sanchez today and their huge effort destroyed peloton completely. Only Cunego and Garzelli from our team and about 30 others could keep high pace. When Philippe Gilbert attacked with 40km to go, Garzelli tried to counter. Unfortunately he couldn´t join him and decided to wait for Cunego, who attacked with several other riders few kilometres later. Meanwhile Gilbert managed to increase his lead up to minute. Garzelli pushed hard for our today leader Cunego, but gap remained almost the same, so Cunego decided to attack alone. He joined Gilbert just before finish, but it was too late, Gilbert became new world road race champion!
Sanchez managed to attack and finished 3rd. Garzelli took nice 6th place behind Rodriguez nad Kroon.
New world RR champion - Philippe Gilbert

I have just already finished season 2009. In upcoming days I will make remaining very short reports from autumn classics (6 races). Then I´ll take a break and decide what to do next. It´s hard to say atm, if I find another motivation to continue with storywriting after (hope) quite succesfull 4 seasons, I feel a bit tired...better doesn´t know how much time it consumed during last year |
