thats how the sport works.
In case it's not tremendously apparent, that's Contador's big weakness. Look throughout his career at his worst performances. What's the common denominator?
Simple: Everytime he cracked, he was put under pressure from the start of the stage.
He's a brilliant rider, but his stamina sucks. He's the diametral opposite of Sastre, for instance. Every single one of Sastre's best career results came in the longest and hardest of all mountain stages, where the pace was high from the start.

You are on to something here. This is something I have observed myself as well, For instance, he always seems to crack whenever he participates at a classic. Sab Sebastian and the Olympics last years where some of his woefull appearences. Also the Worlds last year (I think he rode them?) where not even close to good.
He is indeed coming up short in endurance, something you also see in long time trials. Not the 1 to 30km long time trials, but the 50km ones. That's also where Contador meets his limit. |

Look at the final TT in 2007, back when he won the Tour. There was a tailwind, so the time gaps were much smaller than they normally would've been (otherwise Leipheimer or Evans would've won the Tour)
In the first 17.5kms, Contador lost 21 seconds to Evans
The next 17.5 kms he lost 33 more seconds.
Notice how he lost more time in the second part?
But there's more.
The next 15 kms after that (not 17.5, only 15) he lost 45seconds
And after that, in the final 5kms alone, he lost 43 seconds.
Strong evidence, no?

Also, he seems to overestimate himself sometimes. As if he doesn't listen to his own body - again, completely opposite of Sastre. Today and l'Aubisque being the best examples.
Never.

I was just looking at the TT at last year's Vuelta. Again, the results show the same
1st check (11km)
Leipheimer
Chavanel +0:04
Contador +0:05
Sastre +0:37
2nd check (28km)
Leipheimer
Chavanel +??
Contador +0:24
Sastre +1:09
finish (42.5km)
Leipheimer
Chavanel +0:12
Contador +0:49
Sastre +1:30
He lost more time to Leipheimer and Chavanel in the last third than he did in the first two thirds put together.
In fact, by the time he gets to the last few kms, he even starts losing time to out-of-form Sastre.
EDIT:
Just to ram the point home
Olympics:
km 10.8
Contador
Larsson +0:17
Cancellara +0:28
Leipheimer +0:30
km 23.5
Cancellara -0:15
Contador
Larsson +0:10
Leipheimer +0:28
km 34.6
Larsson -0:20
Cancellara -0:14
Contador
Leipheimer +0:32
km 47
Cancellara -1:18
Larsson -0:45
Leipheimer -0:09
Contador
To give you an idea, by the final sector, he's not even gaining time on Chris Anker Sörensen...

He has no stamina. The longer he goes, the more he slows down.
At the first checks, a few kms into the TTs, he has great times. Farther along into every TT, the times keep getting worse.
By the time he's at the last few kms of each TT he's actually going slower than Chris Anker Sorensen and an out-of-form Sastre.

Neither did i. I always thought he had a great stamina or he wouldn't be able to attack so many times.

Ahh.
Thanks for the ultra-explanation - although, you must be aware of the infamous Danish sarcasm

He wasn't makinf fun o Sorensen. He was just saying that Contador was loosing time to a guy that is nothing near a timetrialist.

So the question now is.....How soon is he going to attack tomorrow? I doubt he'll wait until the final climb.

Armstrong wrote on his twitter (according to l'equipe) :
"a bad day for Alberto. So much talent, but still so much to learn"

Contador didn't get that far behind after today's stage...
Who do you think will win?
Luis Leon is the obvious bid, but does anyone else has it?
I could be tempted to say Jens Voigt if he was allowed to race his chances... |
