Exciting stage! And so close for Nibali in the end, certainly close considering the other gaps. |

25/5-29/5 2016 Baloise Belgium Tour 2. HC
28/5 Stage 4/5 Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure - Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure 164.3 km
The fine weather from yesterday’s time trail is gone. Today we are looking at a very clouded sky and a strong breeze.
The morning breakaway is 9 riders, Astana get Dmitriy Gruzdev in there, but the never get more than a minutes, a few kilometer before Mur de Thuin they are brought back.
Just before Mur de Thuin a new attack, initiated by Yoann Offredo (FDJ), 7 riders and with Astana’s Davide Malacarne, Yoann Offredo on paper the strongest rider in the group.
It has started to rain
With 50 km to the finish, one of the stage favorites William Bonnet (FDJ) has a puncture, it this point the peloton speed is close 50 km/h, he will find it hard to get back without help from teammates.
The distance between the breakaway and the pack is 2’38.
20 km to the line, distance to the pack 1’08. Starting to look unlikely that the breakaway will make it.
10 km, 1’09” The pack is not getting any closer.
6 km We get a crash, Diego Rosa is down.
3.5 km Yoann Offredo (FDJ) and Julien Bernard (Trek) attacks from the breakaway, they got 48” to the peloton.
But with just 1.4 km left the sprinters are passing them. Tom Van Asbroeck leading for Moreno Hofland first, right behind them Oscar Gatto for Peter Sagan.
Moreno Hofland wins Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure in front of Peter Sagan and Maximiliano Richeze.
Evaluation:
Overall:
This was Moreno Hofland’s 2nd win of this year’s Belgium Tour and 3rd season win.
All top 3 favorites did well, sharing the podiums.
The loser today was BMC with two top 10 favorites, Daniel Oss best as 14th must be disappointing. Also FDJ losing their sprinter to a puncture, getting Sébastien Chavanel best as 20th must be disappointed.
Despite the wet roads, everyone made it to the finish without major injuries.
Astana:
Not much worth mentioning, just a bit of TV time.

@Sutty: Not much 29" - but with Dumoulin, Thomas, Gilbert and others in the race, going to be tough just to stay where he is now.

6/5-28/5 2016 Giro d'Italia
28/5 Stage 21/21 Cuneo – Torino 164.9 km
It is a sunny day in late May, a bit too hot but a gentle to moderate breeze will keep the riders comfortable. Mostly tail-wind from 10-20 km/h.
The morning breakaway is 7 riders, the best sprinter Lampre’s Yukiya Arashiro, also a rider that might do well on the small hilly climbs. With 100 km left they have built a lead of 5’30”
A lot of teams have ambitions at this final option in the Giro. Lotto, BMC, Katusha and Quick Step are all sharing the responsibility of reeling in the break.
A strong peloton working together like that is hard to hold off, with 20 km left the breakaway has only 1’19”, but they still work together well.
Astana did get a fine train up, but a misunderstanding between the riders and suddenly they are too far back, with less than 2 km to the line.
The breakaway was caught under the red kite, when Gaviria sprinted under the banner with Kittel glued, Juan Jose Lobato ½ a meter in front of kittle but with no leadout.
Jean-Pierre Drucker patiently waiting in Kittel’s wheel.
Kittel wins the last stage of the Giro, in front of Drucker and Lobato.
Evaluation:
STAGE:
Overall:
This was the 3rd stage win from Marcel Kittle in this Giro, and his 5th win of the season. The amazing German sprinter have now won a total of 14 Grand Tour stages
The most positive surprise today was clearly Jean-Pierre Drucker, more of a classics specialist and tempo rider than a sprinter, he was able to use the bumpy terrain and take Kittel’s wheel at the right moment.
The disappointment was Lotto Soudal, working so hard all day in the peloton just to see André Greipel ending as 17th.
Astana:
Forgettable stage seen with Astana eyes.
Evaluation:
GIRO GC:
Overall:
With a previously best Grand Tour result as 7th way back in the 2010 Giro, a huge Giro from Richie Poste, winning the general, the points and two stages, also the first Grand Tour stage wins from Porte.
All the pre-race favorites did ok, if we disregard Bardet who abandoned and Aru/Kelderman who was riding with injuries for many days.
The best placed riders not between the media pre-race favorites was A. Yates 6th.
Astana:
Even if the team did not win, they cloud not be more satisfied, Vincenzo Nibali showed determination to go for the best result after he had lost so many minutes.
Also Miguel Ángel López, who suddently became Astana’s only GC hope for a while, did very well.

Great race given the circumstances. Too bad the sponsor objectives are static in-game.

A very good result for Nibali in the end. The gap to the top was too far to make up but he made a race of it. Good effort from Lopez as well

Kiserlovski01: Thanks - and yes the way PCM handles goals are pretty stupid in general.
sutty68: Sprint train surely need some more attention going forward - 2nd in Giro is fine, especially considering how bad it looked at some point.
AbhishekLFC: Thanks, was a great and fun race, all in all.
Ripley: Was amazing to watch this on Italian TV.

25/5-29/5 2016 Baloise Belgium Tour 2. HC
29/5 Stage 5/5 Sprimont - Banneux 176.3 km
It is partly clouded with mostly side wind from 30-40 km/h
The morning breakaway slips away over the first hill, just a few km after the start. It is Paul Voss (Bora), Diego Rosa (Astana), Yoann Offredo (FDJ) and Grégory Rast (Trek). When they start for the first time over Côte Niaster, they have 5’41”.
The peloton does not react and they get additional time on the climb, starting the first climb over Côte de la Redoute with a lead of 6’41” 134 km to the finish.
The lead is maxed out at 7’36 with 125 km left, then Giant set several riders in front with the support of Lotto Soudal’s Jasper De Buyst and Tinkoff’s Oscar Gatto, the distance starts to melt.
After the 2nd intermediate sprint at Côte Niaster the distance is reduced to 3’46”. The pace in the peloton is very high, with riders struggling with the combination of side wind and the hills.
It is Rosa and Offredo setting the now much higher pace up front, Rast and Voss just hanging on the best they can. 2nd time over Côte de la Redoute Grégory Rast starts to look cooked, might well be dropped.
Form 20 km left and onwards the pace in the peloton is extreme, over the next 10 km the peloton is redused for 104 to 47 riders, Offredo attempts a final desperate attack but when he passes under the 10 km banner he got just 22 sec, mission impossible.
Up the final hill to Banneux, first Philippe Gilbert (BMC) and shortly after Gaëtan Bille (Wanty) attacks. The other favorites have no energy left to counter.
Gilbert wins the stage to Banneux in front of Bille, Boom wins a close bunch sprint for 3rd.
Evaluation:
STAGE
Overall:
This was the 2nd season stage win from 33 years old Belgian Philippe Gilbert, after also winning a stage in Tirreno – Adriatico. Gilbert have had a season with many close but not to be, 2nd in Liège, Tirreno and Strade Bianche.
The huge positive surprise today was Gaëtan Bille from Professional Continental team Wanty–Groupe Gobert, not many predicted a top result from him. But he got something extra when it comes to Tour of Belgium, last year he was GC 3rd.
The most disappointed must be Trek – Segafredo, Fränk Schleck already lost contact with the peloton sitting to far back on the 2nd climb over Côte de Banneux and even though he made it back 29th is far from acceptable.
Astana
Very good podium from Lars not even considered a top 10 favorite for the stage.
Also a good attempt from Rosa getting a lot of fine TV time for the sponsors.
Evaluation:
GC
Overall:
This was the 3nd season win from Dutch Tom Dumoulin, his 1st GC win of the season.
Looking for GC wins prior to this we have to go as far back as 2011 where the then 20 years old Dumoulin riding for Rabobank Continental Team won Le Triptyque des Monts et Châteaux (2.2)
The race played as expected with the best ITT riders domination the GC, only Taylor Phinney lost so much time on stage 2, what we was permanently out of the GC even though he had a great ITT.
Astana
A top 5 here was a good result, especially with Boom quite far from a form peak.
