Tour du Vendée (1.1) Western France, 198.6 kms While our climbers travelled to Italy, our guys for the flat were racing in the very west of France for what could be another chance for Barbero. But he didn't have his best day. Lotto's Belgian champion Tiesj Benoot won thanks to a smartly timed attack. Fourth place for Carlos Barbero. Giro di Lombardia (WT) Northern Italy, 255.8 kms This year's Race of the Falling Leaves would bring th riders from Como to the city of Bergamo, ending with a very short climb with flattened and easy cobblestones with just a few kilometers to race afterwards. Edoardo Zardini might've thought back on the lake next to which he was born (Lago di Garda) when he had just joined the breakaway riding along the Lago di Como. No real big names in the group apart from him and Direct Énergie's / Colombia's John Darwin Atapuma. The Madonna di Campiglio was even less decisive as it was put near the beginning of the race. With a little over 100 kms to go, the Colle dei Pasta was where the advantage, once over 8 minutes, would start to come down brutally. They started the climb with a gap of 5 minutes. The small group was still together at Colle Gallo, but this climb gave our Edoardo Zardini a very hard time. He came back in the descent. Luckily he stepped up at the next climb. It was another culinary tinted one, the Passo di Ganda. Zardini upped his game and would reach the summit alone. Meanwhile both Sam Vandenborre and Ion Izagirre had lost contact with the first group, which had come down to less than 10 riders. Zardini continued his solo over the next steep Bracca climb. That's when Edoardo may have made his only mistake in his otherwise perfect race. He did not immediately wait for the upcoming trio and had to let the group go on the short cobbled climb to Bergamo Alta. Gregor Mühlberger, Julian Alaphilippe and Adam Yates were undoubtedly on their way to a decisive three-men sprint in the streets of Bergamo. In the end the young Austrian, who will ride for Team Sky next year, waved goodbye to his Bora-Argon18 in style as he secured their very first win in a monument. This was the biggest win of his career after having finished on the podium at the World Championships last year.
Edoardo Zardini finished in fourth place after a brilliant race from the breakaway. Behind, Izagirre grabbed 7th in front of Simon Yates. Sam Vandenborre gave his all to bring Ion as close as possible and in the end, he saw his efforts rewarded with a spot just outside the top 10, which meant our team would come first in the teams classification. Tour of Almaty (1.1) Southern Kazakhstan, 189.6 kms The very last race of our season came after a long flight to Asia. This tour is raced on the highways on the outskirts of Kazakhstan's biggest town. No categorised climbs but some false flat sections to conquer. A breakaway that contained riders of four different continents took off. Brazil's Ednaldo Luiz Cortes represented the Americas and our team. Their move was neutralised with 10 kms and several riders attacked. Only Astana's Mathieu van der Poel opened a gap and it looked like he was going to earn the team a victory on home soil. At that moment Barbero had chosen Dayer Quintana's wheel for a possible sprint. The Dutch former CX world champion made it to the line while Carlos outsprinted the rest of his group for the second place. A nearly perfect end to our season but the riders have really earned their rest by now. Frankly, this team did no longer belong in the Pro Continental division still it will be a big step going up a division and playing on extreme. We probably won't score to many points in the cobbled races so the stage races will even be more important

Santos Tour Down Under - stage 1 South Australia The very first stage of this new season is only 150 kms in length and does not really offer any big difficulties. Well, apart from the heat that surely will affect at least some of the one hundred twenty-six riders. But the first stage is not an easy walk in the park, as the breakaway still has a minute with 20 kms to go. Most of our riders, riding on new Orbea bikes, have now taken a place near the front of the peloton. The breakaway doesn't make it due to a very high pace. Our sprinter Carlos Barbero immediately feels what it is like to race at World Tour level, as he is forced to watch the bunch sprint from the second row. In the end it's Slovakia's champion Peter Sagan who starts the season with a win, as he clearly beats Jasper Stuyven and home rider Caleb Ewan for both today's stage win and the first orange leader jersey. Santos Tour Down Under South Australia, stage 2 Stage 2 could already be decisive for the GC. No steep ramps though, thus the gaps won't be too big. A bad day here could cost you anyway. Today's breakaway is hardly worth mentioning as it's dealt with really quickly. With just under 10 kilometers to go, Mathieu Van der Poel and Jasper Stuyven decide to anticipate. They are joined by GC leader Sagan and Davide Villella and the winner will come out of that group. In the end Stuyven plays it smartly and beats Van der Poel and Sagan in the uphill sprint. The Belgian sprinter is also the new overall leader.
