Great to see Henry for once following Nibali to the line.
Nibali still seems to be the strongest, but +1.58 is not impossible to win back later in the race, where Henry's freshness maybe will kick in

The Hobbit - I never tell the whole story, no I leave some gaps for you to fill in yourself, to leave some mystery You can puzzle yourself why Becca showed up.
Atlantius - Well, maybe it is a sign Henry is no more the boy happy with a top 5 somewhere.
sutty68 - Yeah, After all Nibali has that Tour de France in his legs, so he might have trouble in the final mountain stages.
Dippofix - I'll be screaming blood and murder
Shonak - I never said she was I think you just assumed this. She showed up on his doorstep and she needed to talk, but this doesn't automatically means pregnancy, though
krisa - I agree! He's developing into a wonderful climber!
anderspcm - It's a start. First Henry lost time to Nibali, now he sort of stays the same. Maybe in the final days he can take back time? However, with another 40+ kilometer in the 20th stage, I'm not sure what he can still do.
Thanks for the support!
In my new attempt to stay focused for school as well as bring regular reports, I don't touch my laptop (which has PCM installed) before noon. Except on weekends, of course |

Hey everyone,
Just a minor thing to say. We're about an hour from the next race but I got a phone call from Sofia, telling me off for putting her photo on the blog in "And I Love Her - Part VIII".
Sorry about that, Sofia. I guess the internet is a dangerous thing after all.
I'll report back from the race later!

Nice to see Henry doing so well in Spain.. you must be happy with that 2nd, Nibali will not loose that time for you, so you just need to keep riding like you have been..

Jakstar22 - Thanks a lot, mate, glad to have you on board
baia - I never expected that 2nd place, but here he is, hanging on to it. His second GT and already 2nd. Though less than 30 race days before the start of it, that must have something to do with it. |

The Night of the Heartache - Part I Becca was in pretty bad shape. Three weeks after she threw me out of her hospital room, she was fired from the hospital. Still in a wheelchair, the doctors were optimistic she would one day walk again.
Before the left the hospital, we had a good talk and made things good.
I offered her a place at my home, but she didn't want to. It was time for her to become independent, she said.
Her job paying as much as it does, she bought the "For Sale" house in town. She was only three streets away. It seemed I had my best friend back.
Meanwhile I had forgotten about my plans to ask Sofia to marry me. After all, I was still 23 so there's no rush there. Things were going great and I just wanted them to stay as they were.
Alas...
It was a Saturday night. Next day I'd leave for Spain, to ride Vuelta a Burgos and the Vuelta a España. I had already said bye to Sofia (I'd be gone for over a month) since she had to be in Switzerland for her job.
I was alone at home and decided to have an early dinner, followed by a nice movie (Casablanca, of course). Just when I sat down, I heard someone at the front door.
Vuelta a España - Stages 16 - 18
Stage 16 One for the sprinters. And when I say sprinters, I mean Ca... Wait a minute, where is Cavendish? Peter Sagan is taking this one!
Stage 17
Once again I was stupid enough to miss the first attacks. This time I was blocked in. I had to make up 200 meters to Nibali.
I almost did. But at the top of the mountain, I didn't quite catch him. He was the better downhill for sure.
He took the stage. I lost more time, instead of gaining time.
Stage 18
We had a battle plan cooked up for this stage! Our team totally ripped the competition to pieces. My legs felt so great I thought I was flying!
With 40 kilometers left to go, we were reduced to a 11 man group already. Our plan had failed in a way, since I was to do a big-out attack, but the situation wasn't all bad.
I did my share and placed an attack every once in a while. You don't win if you don't try!
The pace didn't exactly drop. It was getting tough, but I still felt very strong!
Waiting for the sprint would increase my chances. But That wouldn't be enough, I wanted to gain time. I surprised Nibali and attacked with 3 kilometers left to go!
Those must've been the 3 toughest kilometers in my career, but I did it!
I took it home and gained back some time. Stage win number 2! Not according to our original plan, but it ended in a victory, so we can't complain!

Analysis & Daily Thoughts Oh I'm just so happy to get another stage win. The team worked so hard during this entire Vuelta and the support I've been getting is more than I could hope for.
This win was for the entire team.
Meanwhile, the GC looks like it's settling. Only one more hilly stage, one more time trial and one more flat stage.
Nibali can be beaten, and I'll attack him again tomorrow! |

The Night of the Heartache - Part II "Becca?"
"Hey, Henry, I wanted to see you before you went to Spain".
I was pleasantly surprised. I offered her in for a drink.
We talked a bout, poured some wine, talked some more.
I even started Casablanca, it turned out she loved that movie, too.
I thought I was in for a great evening, with my best friend.
Vuelta a España - Stages 19 I don't think there'll be a battle for the GC here. I don't see a way I can take back time. But that don't mean I won't try!
The Race Our team is fighting for survival and nobody knows that more than Silvio Herklotz. He went into the break and finished it off properly. A second one for him, that makes six for our team here at this Vuelta!
But the stage wasn't over yet! Poels launched me with 4 kilometers left to go. This wasn't a plan at all, but some kind of genius idea by Poels. He took me in his slipstream, going hard! He must've had a superday!
He kept on going and by the time he stopped, all I had to do was finish the final kilometer. I did that and took back more than half a minute on the peloton!

Analysis & Daily Thoughts I took back 32 seconds, but I'm afraid those won't matter much. After all, tomorrow is a time trial. Did I just waste energy I could've used so much better tomorrow?
I don't know.
All I know is that if I do a decent job tomorrow, I will make the podium in the Vuelta. At the age of 23, that would be the perfect stepping stone to one day winning a GT of my own!

Dippofix - Thanks That 2nd place looks secure, I think.
Selwink - I agree! Roche, Herklotz (x2), Henry. We brought a strong team and it's paying off! |

This has for sure been a fantastic Vuelta, not just for Henry, but also for the team. Nibali will take the win and Henry will get 2nd, fantastic results since the goal was top10 - top5!

Have to say that it has been a brave effort from Henry but he will have to admit defeat to the better guy |

The Night of the Heartache - Part III The pleasantness that the evening was couldn't have turned any more brutally. It all started when Becca pressed the "pause" button.
"Henry, we need to talk."
I had no idea what she was talking about.
"It's about Sofia."
"Wait, do you not like Sofia? Because I'm getting b--"
"Henry, you're such a stupid man. I'm in love with you!"
Oh...
My phone rang.
"Don't answer that, Henry."
I didn't. But I didn't know what to say to her either.
Everything become so clear, suddenly. How could I have been so stupid? I should've seen it all along.
She continued: "And you shouldn't be with that Italian slut, you should be with me."
I started to look stupid, not saying a word.
"Uhhmmm..." Yeah, great answer, dumbass.
"And I can't see you with her. If you choose her, I can't see you anymore, Henry. I'm sorry."
What the hell just happened? Two minutes ago we were watching Humphrey Bogart chain smoking, saying something like "of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world she walks into mine", now she's asking me to choose between my best friend and the woman I'm in love with?
I'm in love with?
Am I? I mean, Becca and I have such history. Of course I love her.
But do I still have feelings for her?
I bet this is the hardest a cyclist ever had to think.
Vuelta a España - Stages 20 - 21
Stage 20
A big day here. Hope for a good day.
I only had one goal: leave Nibali behind me. That I did.
I kept my second place! Just one more day and I'd be runner up Vuelta winner.
Stage 21 Not much to do today. Or is there? Nibali is leading the points: 198 points. Me? 195 points. Points to be earned at an intermediate sprint? 4 points.
Time for action!
199 points! I'm now in the lead of the Points Classification!
All I had to do was stay on Nibali now, make sure he didn't take a single point.
Who else but Cavendish took the final stage. But I end up on the podium multiple times tonight! I'm so happy!
And that concludes my Vuelta 2014. What a ride it's been. Amazing, simply amazing.

Analysis & Daily Thoughts Wow. This Vuelta has turned into more than I ever expected of it. A second place in the GC is just so amazing, it makes me hope for something more in the coming years. Conquering the Points Jersey on the final race day made it even more special. Add 2 stage victories and I'd say this is the best race I've ever done.
Maybe the Team Classification is even the greatest one. It is a reward for all of our hard work. We are all friends and maybe even grew closer together during this Vuelta.
If I was just a young rider with potential before, this Vuelta certainly made me a man in the peloton. I returned after a heavy injury and let my legs fight back.
I'm ready for even more!
Henry
