Race Report : Gent - Wevelgem
Pre-Race:
In this race it will be more anticipation than sprint power that the team will have chance to win. Fabian must attack before the other to anticipate the mass sprint.
Race Report:
We were not consider as real favorites here so we let the other teams made the chase, but after the second cobbled section, a group of nine riders have been created, 4 Omega Pharma and 5 Leopard Luxembourg Team. Tom Boonen was there for Omega Pharma but fabian was in the group behind. I was in this group of 9.
As there was Tom Boonen in our group we did not help him and thanks to us 5 in the group Fabian did not have to work to brought the group back.
He saved some energy and in the third and last cobbled section Fabian attacked, he made quickly a gap but this time things were organized behind him.
He got caught by 6 riders 3 kilometers before the line and he was completely out of shape, he did fight in the sprint but 3 of them were too fast, the fastest was Sep Vanmarcke (Blanco Pro Cycling). Fabian ended 5th.
Tony did well in the main pack's sprint taking the 10 position.

Feel bad for Maxime in the Volta, getting second on the same time as the first place finisher. On the bright side Fabian won Three Days of De Panne

Ronde van Vlaanderen
The Profile:
The Squad:
Pre-Race:
Last year, I ended 14th in this very difficult race. Today I will aim a better position that last year. Even if I am here to help Fabian, I promised myself not to use everything to help him and to save a little energy for me.
Race Report:
How funny it is, the same Dutch fan as last year post on his twitter account a picture of me at the start, for him I decided to share it with you
A breakaway with no threatened riders managed to slip away, Bob Jungels and Ben King were charged of the chase alongside the Sky Procycling and Omega Pharma riders.
With a hundred of kilometers left, Mark Cavendish launched the hostilities, he was followed by André Greipel (Team Argos Shimano) and Kevyn Ista (IAM Cycling).
With 80 kilometers left, as Bob and Ben were getting tired, Stijn Vandenbergh decided to attack, unfortunately he never caught the breakaway and he lost a lot of energy in this vain chase.
After some cobbled section it appeared that a group of 7 riders including 2 Omega Pharma (Tom Boonen) and 5 Leopard Luxembourg Team (Fabian, Tony, Maarten, Grégory and I)
Fabian asked us to ride fast but the group behind was getting closer, I was not really found of wasting energy for something like that so I went to the back for bottles.
Oude Kwaremont second passage:
Sep Vanmarcke the Belgian riders decided it was time for him to accelerate.
Tom Boonen did not wait longer, in the downhill after the cobbled he started the chase of Sep Vanmarcke.
20 kilometers left:
Fabian caught the lead and did not wait them, he is already in his way for victory.
Oude Kwaremont third passage:
Fabian was alone at the front, he was leading by 16" on Tom Boonen and Sep Vanmarcke.
Paterberg third passage:
Fabian was still alone but the gap was increasing, the lead was 57" but on Boonen only who left Vanmarcke.
And finally in Oudenaarde Fabian celebrated his great victory.
Boonen arrived second 1'48 later.
And as I promised myself I did not stopped my effort when Fabian left, I took the 11th position!!!

Flasch Interviews:
Journalist: Tom, thanks to stop and to talk with us, last you were getting a closed second position behind Fabian (2nd at 0" ), today Fabian was far ahead you. how do you feel?
Tom Boonen: Well, Fabian is the best I can't denied it but when you see the team he has with him, the surprised is not really there. I'm especialy talking about this French guy (Me) who ended 11th after the work he did, last year he was in end of contract and I asked my manager to recruit him but he did not accept the offer too bad.
Journalist: Thanks Tom and I'm seeing Sep Vanmarcke coming, Sep you left a little early, did not you?
Sep Vanmarcke: No I did not left too early, I left too late, I knew that to beat Fabian or Tom I had to anticipate their move but they were simply too strong for me today.
Journalist: I'm now with the winner, Fabian, great win, congratulation, what's you're strength?
Fabian Cancellara: My strenght? It's my team, they really did a great job today, I really want to thanks them because they kept me out of trouble during the whole race, I think that if I had not win, they would have be very disappointed in me.
Journalist: And Mark ended 11th after helping you before is quite surprising isn't it?
Fabian Cancellara: I don't think it's a surprise, look at his past results and you'll see that even if he is an helper his position are getting better and better. I see him winning this races in a few year.
Journalist: well, thanks Fabian and good luck for Paris - Roubaix.
Another day that end for me, I'm very tired and angry, none of the staff members except Alain Gallopin congratulates me for my result, they all found that I did not help enough Fabian today, I really don't understand their points. See you for the next races. |

Ian Butler: I hope he is not cause I'm risking my life there
welker3257: you got me but don't worry I won't make something completely out of mind.

Paris - Roubaix
The Profile:
The Squad:
Pre-Race:
Last year I was in the top 10 because my leader had a flat tire and we did not wait after him, this year doing it would be a miracle. The manager decided to take me as a team-mate for Fabian because of my behavior in Ronde van Vlaanderen.
Race Report:
Again a picture of me at the start I found on Internet.
Like in de Ronde, Bob and Ben were leading the pack, no other team help us and there was a group of 8 riders at front with 12 riders behind them chasing.
When we arrived at the first cobbled section I went to Fabian to asked him what was his plan today.
Trouée d'Arenberg (86 km to go):
Juan Antonio Flecha (DCM Pro Cycling Team), Johan Vansummeren (Garmin - Sharp) and Filippo Pozzato (Lampre - Merida) accelerated the pace in front of the pack, as we were well positioned we managed to follow them we were 17 riders in that group, Tom Boonen was not there.
67 km to go:
The group of Boonen caught us, Fabian to test his opponent decided to make a move, no one followed him he was gone.
Mons en Pévéle (51 km to go):
Fabian is alone at the front, a group of four riders is behind him at 40"
33 km to go:
Tom Boonen had joined Fabian, Fabian bluffed showing sign of tiredness to comfort Boonen's acceleration.
29 km to go:
Boonen even took the risk of attacking, Fabian did not react, he had found his own rhythm.
Carrefour de l'Arbre (19 km to go):
Fabian had caught Boonen and he did not slow down, Boonen fought to follow him but he failed. Fabian lead was 42".
Roubaix (5.6 km to go):
Fabian was still leading but the gap was shorter, we he left the last cobbled section of the day he was leading by 20".
Roubaix - Velodrome:
Fabian entered the velodrome first 23" before Boonen.
And finally after 7h11'59 of racing Spartacus crossed the line first with Boonen in his wheel.
When I entered the Velodrome I was alone, I did not know who was in front of me and who was behind me, I just knew that Fabian had won the race. In the end I learned I was 13th which is a great result for me even if I knew that if I did not have to work for Fabian I could have done better.

Flach Interviews:
Journalist: I'm with Matthieu Ladagnous, Matthieu first french of the race and 7th good result?
Matthieu Ladagnous: Yes, I'm proud of my result and I know that getting that position in such a race is an honor even if I was expecting a top 5.
Journalist: Thank you for your time, I see Sep Vanmarcke approching, Sep, 3rd in de Ronde, 4th in Paris - Roubaix, you're becoming to be very regular in your results.
Sep Vanmarcke: It's true that I improved a lot but I'm still disappointed because if I had been in the group of 17 after the 'Trouée d'Arenberg' I would not have wasted energy to joined them and it would have permit me to leave the group in which I ended.
Journalist: Now it's Tom Boonen, Tom it was closed isn't it? what did you need to win?
Tom Boonen: one lap more on the velodrome and the victory was mine. No seriously Fabian was the best today, he was always well positioned thank to his team mates and he made the perfect race today. I also want to announce that it was my last Paris - Roubaix. I will end my career at the end of the season.
Journalist: really? what made you take that decision?
Tom Boonen: a lot of things in fact, I was thinking of it since last year but I think now it's time to let the new generation have their chances.
Journalist: Thanks a lot Tom and enjoy the rest of your season.
Now I'm with Fabian Cancellara, Fabian 3 in a row in Ronde van Vlaanderen, 2 in row in Paris - Roubaix you are now the king s of Cobblestones, aren't you?
Fabian Cancellara: Ha! Ha! I will never give me a nick name, journalist chose this for me. But again without my team-mates it would not have been possible to make what I've made today, during the first part of the race they were always around me to protect me from the wind which was really strong today.
Now it's time for my break, I will come back for the Critérium du Dauphiné and I hope for the Tour de France.
See you |

About Racing:
During my Break I worked a lot my Time Trial skills as I am aiming at list a top 5 in the French ITT Championship. For the moment I will ride as a team-mate the Critérium du Dauphiné and then La Route du Sud. After this two races I will know if I am selected or not for The Tour de France.
About my Future:
I will not be part of Leopard Luxembourg Team next year, as they fired Allain Gallopin I decided not to asked them a new contract, they did not offered me one either. I will have to find a new team for next year.
See you

Maybe a trip to Omega-Pharma or whatever they're called now? You'd be the leader in mountains and maybe cobbles.
