Yep Gesink was horrible today. Wonder what's going on there. Just a week ago 4th in Murcia (just behind Navarro, who finishes top 20 today), and now he can't even follow the likes of Grivko and Losada..
But how long were the climbs in Murcia ? It might have been a different kind of effort.
The finale wasn't too hard, but Alto Collado Bermejo is rather difficult.
17,5 km, so it probably took them something between 45 minutes and one short hour to climb it. Pretty much like today : a threshold effort.
I guess RG was indeed ill then. His form can't change so much on the same kind of efforts in one or two weeks time.
Btw, Porte climbed more or less as fast as Contador in 2009 (according to different sources, either 20" faster, either 24" slower), achieving 5,7 W/kg (400 W for a 70+8 kg model). That's high but remains reasonable. The other guys averaged 2% less, which is little and much at the same time, given Porte took off quite late on the climb.
But, given the number of guys already doing that kind of numbers on threshold efforts, it shows it's possible to maintain a good level of form throughout the season, unlike what Armstrong did, or what A. Schleck does. I'd say it's quite encouraging to see this.

According to this which is reliable ( but could also be off of course ) Porte was 'considerably' slower than Conta was in 2009 (53 seconds). However that's not taking different conditions and such under examinations of course.

Yeah, I already pointed out there were different times for the Porte/Contador comparisons, so it's hard to draw any conclusion, but the slower Porte gets, the cleaner he looks.
About Gesink, I couldn't see the profile of the Murcia stage before, so I just checked the profile of Alto Collado Bermejo. I take back what I said, it probably wasn't a threshold effort (too far from the end, and no big fight), so his performance on that stage can't really relate to his performances these days. |

I just died laughing.
Eurosport cut the feed in the middle of the commentator's sentence. His last words were "But the cycling doesn't end h"

A Sky rider can attack. Pity it might be the only time we see this for the rest of the season from Sky.....
Well in Ritchie! |

So Henao, Thomas, Froome never attack do they? Honestly some of the anti sky drival that's wheeled out here is absolute tripe.
On a seperate note that was quite a fun stage to watch, Talansky looked very raw and exposed. Porte when he first went looked unsure of himself and then hammered as hard as he could. Porte shoud really win from here, though the minor placings are certainly up for grabs.

Well, Sky-riders do attack.
But when a rider as Porte attacks and creats a gap of over half a minute within 2 kilometres, that's pretty weird to me. Probably I still have to get used to their new training methods, or his opponents were all dead meat in the last 2km....

Gesink wasnt able to stay with the leaders in the las climb of stage 3 of the Vuelta a Andalucia 2013 either, he was left behind in the las climb and only mage to come back in the descent. So its not a big surprise he was left behing today too IMO.

Half of this i believe, half just seems like demented babbling
Also with Sky, David Lopez looks decent. Rather overshadowed by other signings he is shaping up as a decent helper

Well in Ritchie!
I know about ANTI SKY sentiment(I don't like them much) but some might say they play to their strength's.Apart from a couple of riders like Froome,Uran etc they really don't have many explosive climbers who could attack on the steep section get a gap and ride away. The 30 sec margin of Porte win was down to the fact the main contenders didn't work with Talansky in the final one and a half km and also that Talansky was tactically naive(his over ambitious multiple attacks what was he thinking he is no BERTI to do that). |

At least he tried, I'd like to see that more often. |

I think Jeannesson's presence in that group really annoys the other escapees. Today is a perfect day for a break to succeed, but I doubt Sky will let a guy that close to the yellow jersey go away.

I agree, I don't see this break being succesful.

Offredo, Zeits and Gesink and De Gendt all abandoned...
In the meantime, Sky is in control of the peloton, I don't think the breakaway can make it all the way.

Also, since Tschopp is in the break and Hupont isn't, Tschopp has the KoM jersey safe.
