Roberto Velásquez: The Story of A Legend |
Ian Butler
daggen: I'll take it into account Smile 2014 will still be with Colombia anyway!

Jakstar22: Well, exhaustion, I think it's understandable Smile

andy222c: Thanks mate Wink

I will make the schedule later today. It might take a while because I've no idea for him yet, and I don't want to rush it, as Champion of the World, he needs a great schedule Grin

Entering 2014 - Schedule/Goals

His first public appearance in a long time, he gave a press conference early January. This was the same Roberto we had seen in 2013. He had left the breakdown behind him and was full energy for 2014. We listen:

Good evening, I'm glad you all came.

First of all, I'm very motivated to start this year, I can't explain how proud I am to wear the Rainbow Jersey, I want to show it as much as possible, and I want to prove that I'm worth of the title.

Secondly, I want to thank the team. I had signed a contract to leave, but when I had some bad luck last year, they supported me so much, I just couldn't leave them. They have become dear friends and with new signings such as Rui Costa, the team is stronger than ever.

I will now tell you my schedule. I opted for the Giro - Vuelta double, but the Tour de France really wanted the World Champion on their startlist. After long negotiations between the organization, the management and myself, I have decided to accept. I feel I'm ready for the Tour. I will not ride a second GT, since I think TDF will be hard enough as it is.

Because of this beautiful jersey, I want to show it as much as possible, that's why I chose for more one-day WT races instead of longer (GT) races. Here is my provisional schedule:

January: Tour Down Under: going for the GC win, maybe a stage win.

February: Trofeo di Lugano: just warming up

March: Paris - Nice and Volta Ciclista a Catalunya: I want to prolong my title in at least one. I think it's possible!

April: Paris - Vimoutiers, Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne and Liège - Bastogne - Liège. Looking for at least one win.

May: Rest/Training in France and Spain (+ A 3-day stage race for charity in Colombia)

June: Critérium du Dauphiné, National Championship and Tour de France. Looking for good results in all those races.

July: Tour de France

August: Coppa di Camaiore, GP San Sébastian, Hamburg Classic and GP Ouest-France. No concrete expectations in advance.

September: Trofeo della Romagna, GP de Québec, GP de Montréal, World Championship and Lombardia. Maybe my most ambitious month, as I want to get another World title, another win in Lombardia and excellent results in Canada.

That's it. 2014 is a very ambitious year for me, and if even half my goals succeed, I will be a very happy man. Most of all, I want to show the world my jersey and show the peloton the back of it!

Thank you for being here. No questions, please.

Well, he said it himself, a very ambitious schedule. But knowing Roberto, he had the legs for it. Our next chapter will show a Roberto in his first Australian race. With his great early form and not the strongest opposition, the GC win smiled at him. But, of course, he didn't take it for granted. We'll see how he did in Australia soon!

francopell
Interesting schedule, will he ever go for the Giro-Tour-Vuelta in one season?

Ian Butler
A triple GT seems unlikely. I don't cancel it out but probably not.
However, what definitely is on his mind is achieving the Triple Crown: Giro - Tour - WC (RR)

JuanMotr
Nice schedule Smile
Good luck in Australia Wink

TheManxMissile
Personally would have tackled the Giro before the Tour
but good schedule

JuanMotr: Thanks Wink

TheManxMissile: I would've, but that changed with the WC shirt. If he didn't have that shirt, he would've done Giro - Vuelta. Hope you understand (who doesn't want to try and win TDF in WC shirt? Grin)

Looks like a nice and still challenging schedule. Hopefully it'll get him some wins with the rainbow jersey Grin Best of luck for the season even though he will do well without luck. Pfft

Tour Down Under

Many had talked about the curse of the rainbow jersey. Roberto hated that, and that's why he decided to prove early on in the season that there's no such curse. In fact, he was planning to ride his best season yet, just to prove the opposite. Starting Down Under, he successfully started the rainbow season with 2 stage wins and the overall win.

He was most impressive in Stage 2

A profile that Roberto loved. Short and some steep sections with an uphill finish.

He proudly wore his Rainbow Jersey. We would see him a lot in that jersey. In 2014, but also other years!

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/tdu02.jpg

But 2014 brought Roberto some kind of sadness. He shared some kind of curse (not rainbow curse) with beast Cancellara. Both riders were so strong that at many times, riders refused to take part in the breakaway group. When a small group escaped and Roberto was part of them, no one worked with him. No one but Cancellara.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/tdu03.jpg

Of course, he finished it. His early season fitness was unmatched and his youth and determination made him the strongest rider in January.

Roberto went on to win the fifth stage in an uphill sprint.

Roberto Velásquez:

Well, I'm quite content. Two stage wins and the overall win, that's so great. It's a nice country to race in. However, I'm disappointed in some riders. I thought they had more respect for me. I wanted to make the race, but it seems nobody wanted to make the race with me. I hope the rest of the season won't be like this. It's not fun riding this way.

Nice wins Down Under.
