I don't find the article that clear, in terms of why they picked Phinney over Zabriskie?
Because Zabriskie didn't want to.

Zabriskie, five time and reigning national time trial champion was seemingly involved in a tight two-man battle for the sole time trial spot on the team. Selectors announced yesterday that 21-year-old Taylor Phinney was their pick.
Speaking after the Tour of California where he dominated the Bakersfield time trial, Zabriskie said he was motivated to perform in order to gain an Olympic bid, and said the selection committee should "take who [they] think is the best. It's pretty simple."
EDIT Just found what you were talking about. Many requested to be taken out because of their history with Armstrong. (Which I believe is a stupid reason, but I understand it)

Vockler may miss the Tour because of a knee injury.
Guess the entertainment value of this tour will be based on Schleck alone

Ah, that really sucks. Voeckler is such a treat to watch...
Maybe his team mate Rolland will try some attacks? |

Yeah, too many won't compete.
Contador, A. Schleck, Voeckler, De Gendt... |

Watch the Giro they said, it will be fun they said...
You'll never know how the race turns out. I agree though that missing these riders isn't very promising for the level of excitement. |

Yeah, I wasn't saying it will be boring, maybe it came out wrong: I meant that missing these riders is very unlucky for the action of TDF.
But Schleck could make it very exciting. |

If Schleck, Gesink, Van Den Broeck attacks every mountain stage, it could become interesting. Sky domination will be the complete opposite. |

Indeed.
I think Schleck will attack. I don't think VdB will attack, he hasn't that much of acc in his legs, but you never know. Gesink... I don't know, maybe.
I think most action will be from Schleck. At least I hope so.
Or maybe outsiders, who knows. Too bad De Gendt isn't present |

Pozzato has to give a few answers concerning doping. Supposedly he had contact with Ferrari. Apparently there was a phone call and a 50.000 dollars. I don't know the details. He denies it.

Amazing what a blind defence of Lance and Johan can buy you these days? |

The funny part is that Horner was admired for not buying into Lance's lies, publicly doubting that Lance could be clean, calling him out publicly once in a while, and saying the reason he never made it big in europe is because he didn't dope......until 2008.
That's when he joined Lance's team, started praising Lance at every turn, and his performances skyrocketed even though he's nearly 40 years old.

Interesting, I had no idea about any of that - makes it even more amusing/depressing.
The one thing I hold onto is the widely held contention that Evans is clean - he has always performed at a consistent level afaik, it's just that that level was good enough to win the Tour last year.
