Bpost Essen, World Cup Namur & World Cup Heusden – Zolder
After my win in Gieten and the great results in Koksijde and Roubaix, I thought I had finally made it. But cycling can change quickly, and Cylo-Cross is in that even more brutal. I don’t know what changed, but I seem to slowly lose my form. I was more tired, more worried and slightly bunked in for large parts of the next three CX races.
In Essen, I achieved a 9th rank, coming in as one of the last riders in the sprint. The race was won by Tom Meeusen. I made two attacks at crucial points but overall the pace was too high. I put it down to bad luck.

However, things went worse when I came to France and raced in Namur. The World Cup is always a bit more contested than the Bpost Bank Trophy or the Superprestige, and I honestly struggled throughout the race to keep my position, and when I lost it, I kept losing places… I had the hardest time imaginable getting back up. Heck, I was trying to ride when others were carrying their bikes. Just to get a few centimeters more. I think the will was there, but my legs kept getting heavier and at the end, they were a pumping stew, unable to keep me on my feet. I finished 11th, quite some time behind winner Philipp Walsleben.

Things went similar in Heusden-Zolder, where I was dropped early on and couldn’t even get a decent enough start. I rode my own pace as I did so often by now and kept the favourites for a long time in my sight, but it was all the same eventually, when I finished 11th. Pauwels and Nys made some great attacks, but they were meaningsless as it came to a sprint of 6 riders, which was won by Niels Albert. With this win Albert further increases his lead in the World Cup rankings.

I actually wanted to race the Bpost Trophy competitions in Loenhout and Baal, but I think I skip them and focus on the Superprestige race in Diegem. This conlucdes then with a little break and I’ll come back at the World Cup in Rome, hoping to have found my winning legs again.

Well, you can't win all the time. If I were Raphael, I'd be satisfied with that 7th General World Cup position.
Also, the best CX riders are the usually older than Raphael is at the moment, so there's big space for some developing here!

@Jesleyh: Thank you. Yeah, you really, really should.
@admir: Ah well, he's young, no reason to be satisified with what you get. He wants it all! I'm actually starting to think how long Nys will/should stay the best CX rider in the field, hm...

Come on Raphael, maybe you can sneak into the top 5 with the final 2 races? Though that will be a tough, tough task! |

Superprestige Diegem
Pauwels wins unique race in Diegem
In the incredibly shifting weather conditions of Diegem, Kevin Pauwels won the Superprestige Diegem race. From fog to rain to sunshine, this race had everything and it turned a great course into a spectacular festivity. With Pauwels’ win, he also takes over the Superprestige Classement.
I was motivated after the last few races that I skipped, but I suffered a puncture already in the second lap on the pave. Thankfully though, Walsleben and Albert were in a group with me though, and with them as leading charges, I came back fast to the front of the race. I just had to follow their wheels.
With the legs and the willingness to make the race fast, I was riding at the front of the paved hill sections. At some point, I must have been too fast, because when I turned around, the other guys had quite a distance onto me. I decided to keep going and made an attempt on an impressive solo-run.
Unfortunately I must have started my true engine about one or two laps too early because in the fog and rain of Diegem, I got drained by energy towards the finale. When the sun came out, I saw how they were riding behind me. Too fast up those paved hills. I knew Pauwels and Meeusen attacked behind me, and they had a great pace hunting me. It was frustrating to ride against them, knowing that at each turn they made up time. That’s how they reeled me back in. Albert and Nys joined too. In an attempt to stay with them, I was suffering my way through the last lap. I couldn’t hold up at the sprint but I finished a good 5th and I feel like the little break as of late was the right decision.

Ah, great to see you back here. Yes, Crelan and Belkin jersey look quite similiar. The pictures should return on May 8th though.
