Just won a summer 5K run yesterday for the 3rd straight year. Its only been run 3 years too
Broke my own course record with a 18:32. Could do better though, I need more competition!

I've managed to get shin splints! Or, beginning shin splints, at least. I've never been as motivated as I am now, and as it turns out, I'm too motivated. I went on to train too hard for too long and didn't listen to myself. Feel like an absolute idiot now, but I'm still happy.
I've got three weeks left of my holiday so I'm not going to run an inch more, I'll rather be using my bike. I will be starting with three session a week and see how I feel. If it works and I don't lose to much form (probably won't) then I'll hopefully be able to compete in the last few remaining races that I'm registrered for in september.

I ran a 10 km race today, it was 30° C and sunny so the conditions weren't very good. I managed to keep up a (for me) high pace though and finished at 40:56, a time I am very happy with.

Just had my absolute, without a shadow of a doubt, worst running experience of all time.
It was a 5km race (ridiculously hilly) and after feeling fantastic during my last session before the race, I had high hopes for a top 50, perhaps top 40/35 on a good day.
Everything went great up until about 3-3.5km where I suddenly felt a shape pain in the "upper regions" of my stomach. It wasn't gradual either, it felt like being stabbed in an instance. I tried hanging on to those ahead of me for 500m, but then I nearly started vomiting.
I said "screw it" and figured that if I can't do well, what's the point of trying. I finally made it in, after losing something like 2 minutes on 1000m.

Well, just had a session today with the club (hill intervalls, 850m, 3.5% avg. gradient) and it was extremely important for me to prove myself again (prove myself to me, that is) after thursdays utter failure.
It was a great session, I was just behind the two guys who constantly finishes top 10 in nearly every race and I was miles ahead of those behind me. I can't explain how thrilled I am, I really needed a good responce after that last race.

I am beginning to run a little since I wanted to run a half marathon. I have never ran consistently before and since I literally have done nothing the last couple of years apart from cycling a bit, it will for sure be a challenge. It does not make it better that like a little something of 10 Marlboros every day and I don't exactly eat properly since I moved into my own apartment...
Anyhow..... I have started in the local gym and generally run session between 5-8 km, depending on my daily form (some would argue that I have -5 everyday, to use PCM-terms ). My goal is to run those 20 something kilometres at an average of 5.30 min which for sure will be a challenge considering what I am able to right now. I run 2 kms at 5.30, 2 kms at 5.00 and the last km at 4.30 and as of now, the last km is killing me.
Since I am kinda a newbie, I just wanted to put it out there. I have absolutely no clue of how to train properly in front of such a test, but I will for sure begin to run a little longer (thinking 10 km) in a while, but for now, I have enough work to do to run those intervals which I have heard should be a good way of doing it. At least to some degree. Anywaaays, since a lot of people in this thread probably know a shitload more about this, what are yours recommendation? |

Bought this book today after finding some nice quotes from it on goodreads.com Looks like a fun, at times philosophical book about running. Maybe a bit similiar to Murakami's "What I talk About when I talk about running" but much more on the lighter side.
Looking forward to reading it, maybe one or two guys in here know or will like it too.
'Make friends with pain, and you will never be alone.'
At the heart of Born to Run lies a mysterious tribe of Mexican Indians, the Tarahumara, who live quietly in canyons and are reputed to be the best distance runners in the world; in 1993, one of them, aged 57, came first in a prestigious 100-mile race wearing a toga and sandals. A small group of the world's top ultra-runners (and the awe-inspiring author) make the treacherous journey into the canyons to try to learn the tribe's secrets and then take them on over a course 50 miles long.
With incredible energy and smart observation, McDougall tells this story while asking what the secrets are to being an incredible runner. Travelling to labs at Harvard, Nike, and elsewhere, he comes across an incredible cast of characters, including the woman who recently broke the world record for 100 miles and for her encore ran a 2:50 marathon in a bikini, pausing to down a beer at the 20 mile mark.
"It’s a little bit scary when Contador attacks." - Tommy V

I haven't posted here in a while... In the beginning of the month I strained a hamstring pretty badly trying out for my college baseball team. I was sidelined from cross country for a week and a half with minimal training mostly done on a stationary bike. I was forced to miss our first race. The next weekend I was instructed to run the race half throttle by our athletic trainer. Running a 33:30 for an 8K felt like a jog!
This past Saturday I finally was able to race all out. Despite my hamstring not being 100% and far from top shape, I destroyed my old 8K PR of 30:06 with a 29:16! I even set my 3 mile PR at the split in the race with a 17:05. The last two miles were extremely windy, and even the top runners struggled with the block headwind. I'm extremely excited for the remainder of the season, as I am hoping to push well into the 28 range.
Aquarius, I know your formulas projected my 8K potential to be about 29:30. What explains this sudden increase in performance? (Marginal gains ) I honestly think it is in large part due to becoming much stronger mentally. If you have time to crunch the numbers Aquarius, what is my new estimated potential? I hope everyone is doing well with their racing and training! |

The last race of the season was yesterday, a 5km street race. Mostly flat, but with two 600-800m hills at about the 1st and 3rd quarter of the course. I planned to take it easy on the flats and up the tempo in the hills. The plan worked to perfection.
My initial goal for the season was a top 5 in the club and a top 50 overall. Both goals were achieved in the second to last race, so I was hoping for a top 25 overall and a top 3 in the club. I ended up with finishing 24th and 2nd, overall and club.
I've been pretty dissapointed with my last races and needed to show myself as one of the top runners in the club (and overall considering it's about 3-400 participants each race) before the end of the season, so now I can relax.
Relax knowing I'm better than most of their sorry can't-run-for-shit-asses.

Well some bad news from my end... my plantar fasciitis has come back and it is pretty bad this time, as I can barely walk at some points. This after running low 30's for my 8K last week, and was going to attempt to PR in the 5K next weekend. Still listed as questionable on the initial injury report though.
Its only on my left foot, and the trainer here is helping alot with icing and exercises assigned to me. He has been giving it an ultra sound everyday, which is basically putting wavelengths through it to strengthen it.
It feels much better today, and hopefully be next Wednesday I am able to continue. I have been heavily riding the stationary bike, getting 11 miles in 35 minutes this morning. Hoping my new show inserts will help as well.

I followed up last week's 8K PR of 29:16 with a 29:29 on a much more difficult course yesterday! There were several sections of gravel and mud/stone covered trails along with a few short steep hills. The race was insane, as 230 runners from all 3 NCAA Divisions tried to squeeze onto the narrow paths. I ran a completely different strategy from the week before, as I negative split each mile (6:00, 6:00, 5:56, 5:54, 5:39). I still do not feel like I am close to top form... I'm hoping to crush the 29 minute barrier by the end of the season! |

Today my running club had their 2nd in-club 1500m race of the year (one in April, one in October).
I finished 4th with 5.01.41 (rounded up to 5.02), a new personal best and a 35 second improvement since August 2013. The winner finished in 4.56, 2nd place in 4.58 and 3rd in 5.01.9, then a 14 second gap from me down to 5th.
I'm thrilled about improving my PB and getting so low on the 5-mark, but my GOD; I'm annoyed about those two seconds!
2 seconds! On 1500 meters!

Great stuff!
But how do you finish fourth and get your time rounded up if you're half a second quicker than 3rd?

After every training session I write up my time and distance of the run on a website, and today I noticed that I passed 1000 km of running this year. I'm really happy that I've been able to stay away from injuries for a long time, and I'm looking forward to the upcoming races!

There were some problems with the time keeping at the start, and he finished half a meter in front of me

Well, the two best runners in the club weren't there, one of whom is constantly hovering just a few seconds above the 5K- qualification time for the European Championship
Anyway, this was the final confirmation I needed. I wanted to prove myself as one of the top runners in the club and with my 4th place here and 2nd place in a 5k street race I have done it.
Now I'm anxious about the winter; there's no snow yet, but the temperature is usually at +1 degree so it's coming soon. I've always fallen a bit to shambles during the winter training wise, but now that I have other runners around me I think it will go much better.

I would have finished 5th easily... Maybe even third judging by the times (and knocking roughly 12/13 seconds off my mile pb from November last year)... And that as a Sprinter who does 400 max and an out-of-season mile for the craic...
[I am shocked and surprised at the same time]

We were supposed to have a 7k test run yesterday, but a storm has been ravaging the coast for a few days now and we ended up doing it with winds off 15-20m/sec.
We had a tail wind up untill we turned around at 3.5k, before it hit us like a hammer on the way back. In short, all rules go out the window when you pass the first 3.5k in about 11 minutes.

Now and then I use a knee brace if I've felt something in my knee (my knees are cursed by many devils). When I do, the calf muscles in the leg I use the brace the on feels extremely fatigued, even during the warm up. I usually use it on my left knee.
My other leg is just fine, but from the get-go my left leg feels as if it has allready done 20-30k.
Is this common? It's not that I'm not used to running with it, I used it a fair amount a year ago, but now it's only on rare occasions.

Today marks the beginning of the season! The first race of the year, a 7.5k street race on a fairly flat road with only minor hills, allthough all of them come in the 2nd half of the race. I haven't gotten as much training done over the winter as I had hoped to, but I'm still in better shape than I've ever been in mid-april. Besides, I'm never really in shape untill august-september anyway so I'm not to focused on that right now.
Last year I was consistantly in the top 50-60 with on average of 400 people attending each race, and my best result was a 24th place. This year, I'm hoping to (more or less) establish myself in the top 50, getting into the 20-somethings a few more times, and maybe, just maybe, get a top 20. The top 20 is weather, form, competitive field and benevolent gods permitting.
