Stage 6, from Úbeda to Cordóba, is 193km long and almost flat. ALmost, because the danger lies in the last 20km of the race. The riders will face the 2nd categorized climb the Alto de San Jerónimo there, with the summit 10km before the finish.
Before we go to the last climb, first a summary of what happened before. A group of 11 riders formed the BOTD and divided the points for the 2 Intermediate sprints.
IS 1: 1. Andreas Klier (Garmin), 2. Dennis van Winden (Rabobak), 3. Santo Anza (Vacansoleil).
IS 2: 1. José Luis Roldán (Andalucia), 2. Baden Cooke (Saxo Bank), 3. Jonas Aaen Jorgensen (Saxo Bank).
2 riders jumped out of the peloton: Simon Gerrans (Sky) and David de la Fuente (Geox). They closed the gap to the leading group and dropped them while climbing the Alto de San Jéronimo. At the foot of the climb, the peloton was 2'30 behind.
The peloton has started the ascent of the Alto de San Jéronimo. And immediately GC-leader Damiano Cunego attacks. Joaquim Rodriguez reacts, while Robert Gesink chooses to set a high pace. Cunego stops his attack, when he sees Rodriguez behind him and the rest of the group joins them.
2 kilometres later, Chris Anker Sörensen attacks, and Luis León Sánchez follows him. Also Cunego and Rodriguez react. Again, Gesink continues riding in his own pace.
Meanwhile, Gerrans and De la Fuente have reached the summit and can start the descend to Cordóba.
Rodriguez and Cunego follow at 1'16. A small group with LL Sánchez and Mosquera are at 1'33 and the group Gesink, who has 4 more teammates with him, follows at 1'52.
After the descend, Gerrans and De la Fuente still have a lead of '48. The groups behind them have merged, so 31 man are in the chase.
It looks like De la Fuente being the smartest of the two. Gerrans is leading, but the Spanish rider doesn't take over. WIth 1km to go, the chasing group is '45, so the two will battle for the stage win.
Although none of them is the better sprinter in theory, De la Fuente wins the sprint easily and takes his 2nd win of the year (1st was a stage in the Eneco Tour). Aitor Galdos (Caja Rural) wins the sprint for the 3rd place, with Peter Sagan in 4th place.

KOTM, U25 & Teams: No important changes.
Today's winner:
Word from the DS: We are happy we finished the last 2 stages with only a few seconds damage. We hoped that some other team would chase the 2 leaders, but none of them did. There were attacks all over the place. We stayed calm and brought everything together. Tomorrow will be a sprinter's stage.
Stage 7 and finally a sprinters stage. The route from Almadén to Talavera de la Reina is 183km long, and although the difference in altitude between the lowest and the highest point in the race is about 300 metres, it is considered flat, with one categorized climb in the beginning of the stage.
And Wout Poels uses that climb to regain the KOTM-jersey. He takes the points and passes Gesink in the KOTM-ranking. Too bad for the people who put their chairs next to the KOTM-line, probably went to the toilet
After that, 7 riders form a breakaway, but the peloton doesn't let them ride away. However, they are the first ones on the Intermediate sprint, where Javier Aramendia (Euskaltel) takes the most points, followed by Valentin Iglinskiy (Astana) and Juraj Sagan (Liquigas). Shortly after, the peloton catches them.
Then Markus Burghardt (BMC) attacks and nobidy reacts. The German extends his lead to 3 minutes and is the first on the 2nd Intermediate sprint. David Blanco (Geox) and Assan Bazayev (Astana) try to catch him (but won't succeed) and are '46 behind. The peloton follows at 2'51, still 30km to go.
And of course, Burghardt can't stay in front of the peloton. Barely in the last 10km, he gets caught. Again, some empty chairs/seats next to the road.
We try to set up a train again, and in the last 5km, we take the lead of the race, together with Omega Pharma - Lotto. Westra leads out Sagan and finally Bos. Gesink is in the last wheel, just to make sure he won't loose time and avoids possible crashes.
But I suck in making sprint trains. Westra is at full speed (dot 99 and Flat 78), and with 2km to go, he is already passed by the HTC-train (Degenkolb) and on the right side of the road comes André Greipel with a long, long sprint.
But behind our train is a crash! Jelle Vanendert and David Boucher (Omega Pharma - Lotto) have hit each the and crash. Rabo's Dennis van Winden can't avoid the bikes on the road, and is making a front flip. The road get's blocked and a lot of riders will loose time today!
Back to the sprint. 800 metres to go, and Greipel has lost speed already. Cavendish and Boasson Hagen take over and make it a drag race to the finish. Sagan is in 6th place, while Bos hasn't got the legs (again) to overtake him.
Edvald Boasson Hagen is the strongest today and takes his 12th win of the season (e.g. stage wins in the Tirreno, Romandie, Dauphinée, Tour de France (including green jersey) and now the Vuelta). Heinrich Haussler takes the 2nd place behind the Norwegian wonder child, and Óscar Freire gets the 3rd place. Cavendish drops back to 5th and Sagan takes the 8th place.
We switch back to the carnage, caused by Vanendert and Boucher. Only 41 riders finish in the same time as EBH, the others loose 2'25. Most important victims, besides Vanendert, Ruijgh, De Greef & Zigle, are Ezequiel Mosquera (Vacansoleil), Vasil Kiryienka (Movistar), Oliver Zaugg (Leopard), Christophe Le Mével (Garmin), Tejay van Garderen (HTC) and of course Denis Menchov (Geox. 8 !!) riders have to leave the Vuelta after a trip to the hospital (some by car, sime by ambulance): Appolonio (Sky, fractured vertebrate), Bernabéu (Andalucia, fractured hip), Caruso (Katusha, fractured thigh), Felline (Geox, fractured collarbone), LS Haedo (Saxo, fractured collarbone), Larsson (Saxo, fractured kneecap), Salerno (Liquigas, fractured hand) and Ulissi (Lampre, fractured skull). What a bad day for the Vuelta

Today's winner:
Word from the DS: I always feel bad when such a crash happens. Luckily Gesink was in front of it, and our riders involved didn't get injured. Noneoftheless.... I really suck in sprint trains.... Tomorrow a very difficult stage to San Lorenzo de El Escorial, and then the next day La Covatilla!
Stage 8 and again one tough, mean stage.... From Talavera de la Reina to San Lorenzo de El Escorial, with it's world famous Monasetery where most of the Spanish kings are buried and that is placed on the world heritage list of UNESCO (and I've been there twice, it's really beautiful and impresive). The stage is 185km long and features a lot of climb. Luckily for the riders, the finish climb in the streets of San Lorenzo (with parts up to 27%!!) isn't present in the game.
The first climb the riders have to conquer is the Puerto de Mijares (1st cat, 19.7km at 5.2%).
3 riders have jumped out of the pack before the climb to the Puerto de Mijares had started and they reach the summit in front of the peloton. Ben Hermans (Radio Shack), Dennis van Winden (Rabobank) and Mikel Landa (Euskaltel) have an advantage of 5'32 to Wout Poels (hey, the points!) and 6'10 to the peloton. But there are still 120km to go.
But the peloton is shattered into many, many pieces in the ascend of the Puerto de Mijares. Only 35 riders are in the chase, so 152 riders have been dropped this early in the stage. And the domestiques of Lampre and Movistar keep the pace incredibly high, what makes that the 3 escapees are caught with 80km to go.
Next climb, the Alto de San Bartolomé de Pinares (2nd category). The leading group becomes smaller and smaller. Only 17 riders reach the summit together: Gesink, Poels, Ruijgh & Vanendert, Cunego (Lampre), Moreno & Herrada (Caja Rural), Rodríguez (Katusha), Menchov (Geox), LL Sánchez & Barredo (Rabobank), Mosquera (Vacansoleil), Zaugg (Leopard), N. Sorensen (Saxo), Kiryienka & Plaza (Movistar) and Le Mével (Garmin). The pace uphill is that high, Poels can't even sprint for the KOTM-points. Cunego is first on the summit, followed by Moreno and Rodríguez. 65km to go
The summit of the next climb, the Alto de Santa María de la Alameda is 35km from the finish. When the leading group reaches the summit, 17 riders have become 15. Christophe Le Mével and, unfortunately, Wout Poels can't follow the monstrous pace and have been dropped. Ruben Plaza takes the points, followed by Moreno and Mosquera.
In the game, the next climb to Robledondo is categorized, but not irl. In this climb, Rob Ruijgh has to let the others go.
Because of the ridiculous pace, only 14 riders start the last, not categorized, climb of the day. Still 14km to go and Gesink & Vanendert feel pretty well.
It's no surprise to see GC-leader Damiano Cunego being the first to attack. There are 12.5km to go (5 of them uphill) and no-one reacts. Jelle Vanendert does the pace in the chasing group, working hard for his team leader to close the gap.
9.5km to go, and the lead of Cunego is only 30 seconds. Then Ezequiel Mosquera goes in the counter attack. Mosquera lost 2'25 in yesterday's stage to Talavera de la Reina (the mass crash 2km before the finish) and wants to make up some time. Our tactic stays the same.
And we get what we want 1km later: we reel in Mosquera and Gesink starts his jump to catch Cunego (still '30 in front). Vanendert, LL Sánchez and Menchov join Mosquera and Joaquim Rodríguez gets dropped!
Robert Gesink works hard in the downhill and takes a lot of risk to catch Cunego. He succeeds in it. With 1.2km to go, the 2 have a '40 gap to Vanendert, Sánchez, Mosquera, Menchov and ..... Rodríguez. Purito rode a terrific descend.
The last kilometre goes uphill with 3-4% and that is the domain of El Piccolo Principe. He easily outsprints Gesink and scores his 2nd win of the year (next to the Amstel Gold Race), and even creating a 20-second gap. Rodríguez wins the sprint for the 3rd place, 1'00 behind Cunego, Vanendert takes 6th, Ruijgh 15th at 5'16 and Poels 16th at 8'37. 26 riders finish outside the timelimit (none from our team, although Theo Bos only had a 2 minute margin), e.g. Ignatiev, Schär, Hammond, Brammeier, Mol, Pardilla, Phinney and Stamsnijder. Strangely, no sprinters in it!

Today's winner:
Word from the DS: What a strange stage, one of the strangest I've ever played. After 1 climb, so far from the finish and these big gaps. Cunego is very strong with these shorter climbs (5km...), but the next 3 stages should favour us (La Covatilla, ITT, Manzaneda).
Important stats:
Stage 9, from Villacastín to Sierra de Béjar, is 183km long and ends on top of the 1970 metres high La Covatilla. The climb is 18.2km long, and has an average gradient of about 5%. But the 2nd part of the climb is way more difficult than the first part with gradients up to 14%.
The stage kicks off with the ascend of the Puerto de la Cruz de Hierro (3rd category). Wout Poels takes the most points, followed by Ruben Plaza and Thomas Rohregger.
First Intermediate sprint and 3 riders have a small gap to the peloton: Oscar Freire, Markus Burghardt and Heinrich Haussler take the points here, but they let themselves being caught again.
Then André Greipel (Omega Pharma) and Mauro Finetto (Liquigas) give it a go. They have a lead of 2'33 to the peloton at the 2nd Intermediate sprint.
Just before the final climb, Haimar Zubeldia (Radio Shack) went in the counter attack, but it will be unseccusful, because the peloton is very close.
The riders start en groupe the final climb of La Covatilla. Only Adam Blythe (Omega Pharma) is a few minutes behind the peloton.
The first half of the climb is a bit boring, but with 10km to go, Movistar's Ruben Plaza attacks. He is followed by GC-leader Damiano Cunego (of course...) Gesink is a bit surprised by this attack and is stucked behind some other riders.
WIth 7.5km to go, we have a good overview on the current situation: Cunego and Rodriguez are in the lead, followed by Dario Cataldo (Quick Step) and Luis Léon Sánchez at '18, Jelle Vanendert and Denis Menchov at '37 and Robert Gesink and Ezequiel Mosquera at '52. But Gesink is closing in quickly.
And the Dutch rider closes the gap to the 2 leaders within one kilometre! After a short talk with his Belgian teammate, Vanendert attacks with 6km to go, and Gesink is on his wheel.
After following Vanendert for a few hundred metres, Gesink takes over. 4500 metres to go and he has a lead to a group with Rodriquez, Cunego, Sánchez, Cataldo, Menchov, Zaugg and Mosquera of '27.
2km to go, and Gesink leads Vanendert by '41 and the group Cunego by '51.
Menchov, Rodriguez and Cunego join Vanendert with 1800m to go. They are '46 behind the leader.
It's a great win by Robert Gesink, his 10th of the season. But can he trade his green jersey for the red one?
Denis Menchov takes the 2nd place at 1'02. Cunego sprints to 3rd, Rodriguez 4th and Vanendert comes in in 5th place. Counting the bonus seconds....... Robert Gesink is the new leader with a margin of '2!!

Today's winner (here you go, YvesStevens)
Word from the DS: What a great win by Robert Gesink, we are very happy with him, just as with the performance of Jelle Vanendert. Taking over the red jersey is a great bonus, because now Robert is the last rider to start in tomorrow's ITT. We think that is an advantage!
Note: the green colour in the results will come later today.

Next stop in the UCI World Tour is the GP Ouest - Plouay. A hilly classic in the west of France. The riders have to ride 12 laps on a 19.1km long circuit, with about 250 height metres every lap.
In 2010, the race ended in a bunch sprint, in which HTC's Matthew Goss was the strongest. Like in many other races this year, last year's winner isn't here to defend his win.
Favourites: *** Alexandre Vinokourov (Astana), Sylvain Chavanel (Quick Step), Peter Velits (HTC). ** Matti Breschel (Rabobank), Rigoberto Urán (Sky), Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas), Kevin de Weert (Quick Step) *Niki Terpstra, Jerome Pineau (Quik Step), Thomas Löfkvist (Sky)
Our goal: Top 5. Why? It's a sponsor goal! But it will be very difficult, because of the hilly route, it's very difficult to control the race, as well that 3 stagaires are part of our team.
It takes a long time before some riders really form a break. Early in the races, a few breakaways were formed, but none of them got a gap bigger than 2 minutes. But now Steven Kruijswijk (Rabobank) and Leonardo Duque (Cofidis) took some minutes. With 90km to go, the gap is 2 minutes. It gets bigger the following kilometres, and the maximum will be 5 minutes.
After 2 fruitless attempts by Tomas Vaitkus (Astana) and Peter Velits (HTC) to counter attack, we see a serious counter attack 21km from the finish. Jérémy Roy (FDJ) attacks and is followed by Matti Breschel (Rabobank), Alexandre Vinokourov (Astana), Francesco Bellotti (Liquigas) and Niki Terpstra. The 2 leaders are still 1'45 ahead of them. The counterattack isn't succesful as Quick Step catches them again.
Duque and Kruijswijk are in the last lap and the gap to the chasing group is '47 seconds. In that group are 4 riders from Quick Step, 3 from Astana, 3 from Sky, 2 from Liquigas and 2 from Monster Energy (Terpstra & Maaskant).
Under the 10km mark, only Duque still has a little gap to the chasing group, but he will get caught very soon.
After the penultimate climb, with 7.5km to go, Alexandre Vinokourov attacks. Niki Terpstra feels that this is the move of the race and tries to follow the Kazach-rider. Behind the, Quick Step sets up a very high pace.
And the Quick Step-guys bring the group together again. We are already on the foot of the last climb of the day, 2 km to go. The riders look at each other and wait, and wait, and wait. Maaskant still has got some energy left in his legs, but Terpstra feels pretty wasted after his last attack.
It's Vino again! With a very powerful jump, he starts the sprint, followed by Matti Breschel. Maaskant tries to stay in the wheel of the Danish rider, but his legs are burning.
Although Breschel is the better sprinter, he can't overtake Vinokourov. So the 37-year old Kazach takes his 3rd win of the season (stage and GC in the Dauphinée). Breschel is 2nd, Kevin de Weert is 3rd, so Quick Step can't finish their hard work. Martijn Maaskant manages to finish in 5th place, so we achieve a sponsor goal.

The winner of 2011, a truely deserved victory!:
Word from the DS: We are happy with 2 things. Firstly, achieving a sponsor goal with the 5th place of Maaskant. Secondly, all 3 stagaires finished this tough race. Vino really deserves the victory. In the last 20km, he counterattacked once, he attacked once and he was the first to start the sprint.
The inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge is the most demanding bike race ever held on American soil, with racers experiencing breathless altitudes, day after day. The race brings the high speeds, danger and adrenaline of professional cycling to elevations more than two miles high in some of the most picturesque terrain in the world—the Colorado Rocky Mountains. With altitudes and downhill peaks double what riders usually endure, the Colorado Rocky Mountains present a course that is as much a part of the race as the riders themselves.
For seven consecutive days, from August 22-28, 2011, 135 of the world’s top athletes race across 518 miles through the majestic Rockies. This inaugural race in Colorado features the best of the best in professional cycling, competing on a challenging course through some of America’s most beautiful scenery, including cities such as Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge and Steamboat Springs.
Favourites: ***Andy Schleck ** Chris Anker Sorensen (Saxo Bank), Rory Sutherland (United Health Care), Daniel Martin (Garmin) * Michael Rasmussen (Christina Watches), Serge Pauwels (Sky), Matthias Frank (BMC).
Our goal: Well, Andy is the big favourite and the best climber in the race, so the GC with 2 stage wins.
The USA Pro Cycling Challenge kicks off with a 8.3km prologue in Colorado Springs. The route is mostly downhill.
Marc de Maar is the best rider of our team, with a 25th place. He finishes '24 behind today's winner.
The win goes to Team NetAPP's Steven Cozza, who rides this prologue in 9'29, 6 seconds faster than runner-up Bert Grabsch.

Today's winner:
Word from the DS: not a good start, especially Andy Schleck rode a terrible prologue, with only 2 guys being slower.... But I'm sure he will make this up very soon!
