Stage 19

imageshack.us/a/img38/8374/stage19.jpg

The first of 2 stages in Basque country brings the riders to Bilbao, with twice the Alto El Vivero in the last 45 kilometres. The climb isn't that difficult (8.8km at 4.5%), but still difficult enough to prevent a mass sprint.
imageshack.us/a/img266/8185/bilbaoa.jpg

39km to go

Different kind of tactic today: be part of the BOTD, so we don't have to work in chasing the BOTD. Peter Sagan is the one for us, and he is the first to crest the summit of the Alto EL Vivero for the first time. Our Slovakian sprinter/puncheur is joined by 11 buddies: Serguei Lagutin (Qantas), Egoiz García (Euskaltel), Franco Pellizotti (Lampre), Jens Voigt (Radio Shack), Mitja Mahoric (BMC), Javier Etxarri (Andalucía), Matthew Lloyd (Astana), Ángel Madrazo (Sky), Trent Lowe (Sony Ericsson), Diego Tamayo (Colombia es Pasion) and Stijn Devolder (Vacansoleil). The peloton follows at 3'35.
imageshack.us/a/img18/552/139km.jpg

19km to go

The peloton has started the 2nd ascend of the Alto El Vivero, with th emargin to the BOTD being decreased to 2'11. With 6.5km to go to the summit, Rein Taaramäe is the first rider to attack out of the peloton, together with Amets Txurukka.
imageshack.us/a/img515/9045/219km.jpg

15km to go

With a little more than 2 ascending kilometres to go, the leading group of 12 has become a group of 7. Only Lagutin, Pellizotti, Etxarri, Madrazo, García, Voigt and Sagan are present in the leading group. The peloton now follows at 1'28, with Daniel Martin attacking. The Irish gets countered by Txurukka, Thomas De Gendt, Philippe Gilbert, Juan Mauricio Soler and Javier Moreno. So still no worries for Robert Gesink!
imageshack.us/a/img198/9051/316km.jpg

12km to go

Philippe Gilbert is the only rider that can bridge the gap from the peloton to the leading group. He joins them at the summit of the Alto El Vivero. This is the sign for Peter Sagan to attack and throwing himself in the ascend.
imageshack.us/a/img33/8357/412km.jpg

7km to go

Thanks to his outstanding downhill-capacities, Sagan creates a gap of 43 seconds to the chasing group. And as there were no riders in that group willing to work with and for each other, the peloton catches them again. While entering the streets of Bilbao, are these 43 seconds enough for Peter Sagan to take the stage win?
imageshack.us/a/img692/1858/57kmq.jpg

2km to go

Back on the flat, the margin is getting smaller. With 2km to go, it has descreased to 26 seconds. Sagan is at the end of his power, while the sprinting has started in the chasing peloton.
imageshack.us/a/img209/4720/62km.jpg

Finish

Fighting against cramps in his thighs and calfs, Sagan isn't able to sprint out of the saddle. Every metre, the peloton is coming closer and closer and the finish line is lying like a foto morgana at the horizon.
But this is no fata morgana, as the finish line is real, and a big relief for Sagan. The Slovakian takes the 2nd win of the season (first was the Brabantse Pijl), just before Edvald Boasson Hagen and Javier Moreno catch him. All GC-cotenders are present in the first group.

Word from the DS

And that's stage win number 6 for our team, amazing!! Great job by Sagan, especially in the final descend. And Gesink did great in staying out of problems, just 2 stages to go.

I guess the other teams might as well just go home now with Sagan hitting this kind of form and everything else gone to Gesink...

Stage 20

imageshack.us/a/img543/703/stage20.jpg

The penultimate stage of the Vuelta, and the stage isn't designed for attcking GC-favourites. Reason for this is that the summit of the last climb, the steep Puerto de Urkiola (5.4km at 9.6%) is 43 kilometres before the finish in Vitoria.
imageshack.us/a/img854/2162/vitoria.jpg

43km to go

Our plan for today: Gregory Bernard is present in the BOTD, so he can collect enough KOTM-points to take over the lead in the KOTM-ranking. To do that, he needs to be the first rider in all 4 KOTM-sprints. Unfortunately, no other riders wants to join him in the attack, so he has to do a long solo, after attacking before the foot of the first climb. His margin gets a maximum of 2 minutes, but he gets caught by the first chasing peloton only 1 kilometre before the summit of the Puerto de Urkiola.... Poor Bernard, who was so close in winning the KOTM-jersey Sad
imageshack.us/a/img839/473/143km.jpg

25km to go

But because the peloton was chasing Bernard, the pace was that high at the climbs, that a lot of riders got dropped. After the summit of the Puerto de Urkiola, only 14 riders are present in the first group: for Petronas - Monster Energy Gesink (1st), Vanendert (21st) and Breschel (75th), for Movistar Contador (2nd), Barredo (3rd) and Astarloza (10th), for Qantas Albasini (26th), for Dexia Wiggins (11th), Cobo (15th) and Gilbert (25th), for Andalucía Txurukka (6th), for Colombia Soler (7th), for Caja Rural Moreno (5th) and for Astana Kiserlovski (4th). A 2nd group with riders as De Gendt, Taaramäe and Kennaugh follows at 3 minutes.
imageshack.us/a/img856/187/225km.jpg

5km to go

The pace of the leading group isn't that high, as we don't feel like doing the work (hey, we don't need to), Dexia is too weak to do it, and Movistar is fighting which rider has to do it. Consequently, the 2nd group is about to join the first with 5km to go. We have taken the lead of the group and formed a little train for Matti Breschel.
imageshack.us/a/img822/8987/35km.jpg

Finish

With 2km to go, like a jack out of a box comes Gerald Ciolek sprinting passing the first riders of the group. Matti Breschel jumps at his wheel, but realizes too soon that this was to early, as he starts to fade with 500m to go. He gets overtaken by noone else than Carlos Barredo! The 3 previous seasons he couldn't win a single race, and no he takes his 3rd stage win this Vuelta, and is cruising to the 3rd place of the GC!
Breschel finishes in 2nd, Ciolek in 3rd and Gesink safely in the 12th place. Job almost done!
