I didn't expect Gesink to lose time here and he didn't, good job! But the team is weak indeed, hope Gesink can defend his jersey on his own the coming days... |

@ Ian: Thanks. But defending should be possible
@ Maddrengen: No comment
@ admirschleck: Normally only Vanendert can, but his fitness is dropping (85 or 87 I believe atm)
@ sutty: you'll see

Stage 14
Another horrible mountain stage in the Vuelta, as we enter the region of Asturias. Asturias is known for it's long and steep climbs, with the most feared one coming up tomorrow. But first today, a 182km stage from Astorga to the Lagos de Somiedo. After 100 flat kilometres (at an altitude of 1000 metres, the Puerto de la Ventana awaits, the easiest one of the final 3 climbs. After a 20km descend, the Puerto de San Lorenzo awaits, 13.8km at 6.5%. The after a short descend, the final climb of the day awaits, 20.7km at an average gradient of 5.7%, with max gradients of 16%, to the Lagos de Somiedo.
72km to go
And we see 2 familiair faces leading the race shortly before the summit of the Puerto de la Ventana. Remy Di Gregorio and Kanstantsin Siutsou are in the attack again, for the 2nd day in a row. But because Siutsou is the current number 5 of the GC, the peloton (led by Dexia and Petronas - Monster Energy keep them close, 4'22.
39km to go
Peter Sagan does great work in the descend of the Ventana, cutting back the margin with more than a minute. Then when the road starts to ascend again, to the summit of the Puerto de San Lorenzo, Dexia and Caja Rural take over. And the pace they set is that high, that halfway up the climb, Robert Gesink his least domestique (Vanendert) gets dropped. With 39km and one and a half climb to go, he is already isolated....
32km to go
Di Gregorio takes the points at the summit of the San Lorenzo. At 2'11 follows a group of 14, including all GC-favourites.
20km to go
The final climb of the day has begun, and the group of favourites is gaining ground, 1'50 behind the 2 leaders. Gesink has positioned himself among the first 3 riders, with the goal of not getting surprised and boxed in.
14km to go
With 1/3 of the climb done, Juan Mauricio Soler is the first rider to attack. He gets countered by Robert Kiserlovski and by Alberto Contador! The 2 leaders are only 40 seconds in front, so they won't make it today.
7km to go
Surprisingly, Siutsou is still in the lead with 2/3 of the climb done. However, the margin to the chasing group of 15 (including Di Gregorio) is only '30. Alberto Contador attacks, trying to use Siutsou as a spring board. And again, Gesink keeps riding in his own pace.
5km to go
Contador bridges the gap to his Belarussian teammate, and leaves him behind. He manage to create a maximum margin of 25 seconds to the chasing group of 12 (De Gendt, Di Gregorio and Kennaugh have been dropped), but Gesink is reeling him back in.
2500m to go
And the GC-leader reels Contador back in the the following 2 kilometres. Gesink dictates the pace of this leading group, and many riders behind him are struggling to keep his pace. The Movistar riders desperately try to keep his wheel, but Gesink is about to drop them all, with the steepest 2500 metres of the climb stil to come.
1km to go
A little over 1km to go, and Gesink is gone! Only Contador is able to stay in touch a bit and follows at '17. A group with Barredo, Cobo, Kiserlovski, Soler and Mosquera is already '28 behind and at '56 follow Astarloza, Taaramäe and Siutsou.
Finish
It's getting pretty annoying for the competition, as Robert Gesink takes his 4th stage win of the Vuelta, 3 of them with a mountain top finish. Contador takes the 2nd place at '33, while the group Barredo, Kiserlovski, Cobo and Soler looses 1'21!

Word from the DS
Many people say that this Vuelta is done and Gesink will win the GC. But with summit finishes at the Angliru and Peña Cabarga still to go, we think it ain't decided yet. Tomorrow is the Angliru!!

@ Atlantius: Is there actual wildlife in Asturias, so a bear or wolf can knock him off the bike at the Angliru?
@ baia: Thanks man! Gesink is still very strong, with a fitness of 93. Only thing that can trouble him will probably these hilly stages with continuous attacks.
@ others: Thanks. He is the strongest rider with the best fitness, so nothing can't go wrong, only a crash or mechanicals....

Stage 15
It's time for La Gamonal! The 15th stage finishes after the ascend of one of Europes most difficult and feared climbs, the Alto de l'Angliru. With the Alto del Cordal (7.3km at 6.8%) as the appetizer, the Angliru is 12.8km long and has an average gradient of 9.7%. The maximum gradient is located in the Cueña les Cabres and is 23.5%! The GC will be decided today, a weak day will cost you minutes.
81km to go
The tv-broadcast starts with the image of a rider who has hit the tarmac. It's the number 2 of the GC, Juan José Cobo, who was unattentful and lost control of his bike. He can get up again, but will he be injured or not??
66km to go
And hereby Kanstantsin Siutsou is officially declared a lunatic. With 66km to go, he attacks out of the peloton, for the 3rd day in a row. He bridges the gap to the BOTD at the Alto de Tenebredo, but we have started to chase him.
39km to go
Peter Stetina (Qantas), Daniel Navarro (Caja Rural), Franco Pellizotti (Lampre), Daniel Fleeman (Sky) and Tom Danielson (Garmin) must be very unhappy to see Siutsou joining them, as they know that the peloton won't let them create a gap of minutes with the number 5 of the GC with them.
21km to go
The 6 get caught in the ascend of the Alto del Cordal. The peloton stays together untill a few hundred metres before the summit. Robert Kiserlovski is the first to attack. The Croatian number 7 of the GC gets countered by Juan Mauricio Soler (9th), Daniel Martin (17th), again Siutsou and AMets Txurukka (8th).
13km to go
The 5 start the ascend of the Alto de l'Angliru with a small margin of 46 seconds to the first part of the peloton. The attack by Kiserlovski and the increased pace of the peloton has been too much for poor JJ Cobo, and he follows at 2'29. This means, he has been kicked of the podium already.
8km to go
Amets Txurukka is the only rider of the 5 that is able to stay in front of the chasing group. But his margin is small, only 28 seconds. Cobo is seen more than 5 minutes behind at the moment.
7km to go
Even before the steepest sections of the Angliru, La Gamonal makes another victim. GC's number 4 Carlos Barredo can't follow the pace of the group of favourites anymore. Together with Taaramäe, De Gendt, Denifl and Di Gregorio he gets droppes.
5km to go
The gradient has risen above the 15% now, and Robert Gesink has started to dictate the pace of the leading group. Only Moreno (6th), Kiserlovski (7th), Txurukka (8th) and Contador (3rd) can follow and at a sector of 19%, Mosquera and Soler have been dropped. But also Contador is in problems, positioned as the last rider of this group.
3km to go
Robert Kiserlovski attacks at the Cueña les Cabres! He tries to ride to the stage win at the sector of 23.5%, with Amets Txurukka countering him. Robert Gesink first looks at Contador, to see if El Pistolero can follow the 2. But looking pretty dead, Contador tells the GC-leader that he can't counter and even congratulates him with the overall win! After responding with "gracias", Gesink shifts up a gear and starts to bridge the 21 second gap to the Croatian.
2km to go
He passes Txurukka and joins with Kiserlovski. The steepest art of the climb is now done, and a short descend to the finish awaits.
Finish
For a moment, Robert Gesink thought of giving the win to Kiserlovski, as he felt the Croatian needed to be rewarded for his attacking way of cycling this Vuelta. But this stage is too prestiguous to give away, it's the Angliru!!
So he starts a long sprint and manages to take his 5th stage win. Kiserlovski misses the stage win, but jumps to the 3rd place in the GC! Then the riders are rolling over the finish line one by one, and one being even more dead and wasted than the other. Txurruka finish in 3rd at '34, then follow Contador and Moreno at 1'43, Mosquera and Soler at 1'43 and a group with De Gendt, Barredo and Siutsou at 3'20. JJ Cobo is the loser of the day, finishing at 15'05 and dropping to 12th in the GC. 15 riders finish outside the timelimit, among them sprinters Goss and Nizzolo.

Okay, it looks like ithe GC-win is in the pocket. All Gesink has to do now, is staying out of trouble. But with 6 stages to go, and with 4 of them hilly and difficult, he has to be very careful.
