Stage 7
After today, 1/3 of the Vuelta is done. And today is one of the easier stages with just 2000 height metres. A mass sprint is ecpexted in Talavera de la Reina.
Finish
The report of the day can be short: Gregory Bernard collects the maximum amount of KOTM-points in the only KOTM-sprint, a big BOTD gets a margin of max 8 minutes, but gets caught with 10km to, and then Lars Boom tries another late attack, but gets caught this time.
In the mass sprint, we set up a nice train for Peter Sagan, but probably because of yesterday's effort in the bOTD, he totally lacks the power to compete in the sprint (finishes in 14th). JJ Rojas wins the sprtint, with Manuel Cardoso taking a great 2nd for Caja Rural and Mark Cavendish taking the 3rd place. No changes in the GC.

Stage 8
The organisation of the Vuelta is by now officialy decleared completely nuts. The 8th stage from Talavera de la Reina to San Lorenzo de El Escorial, with 3 categorized climbs and the Puerto de Mijares as the most difficult one, and a total amount of 4274 height metres, is classified as hilly. Hilly??? Hilly
127km to go
All these climbs mean a lot of KOTM-points to be divided. And with Gregory Bernard in the polka dot jersey, the team works hard to prevent breakaways to occur before the foot of the Puerto de Mijares, today's only 1st category climb. Bernard attacks a few kilometres before the summit and collects the maximum amount of points. After that, he takes it easy, so the peloton can catch him.
65km to go
The next 2 riders to attack are Carlos Barredo (Movistar) and Michal Albasini (Red Bull). The 2 create a margin of 9'27 to the peloton. And shortly before the summit of the Alto de San Bartolomé de Pinares, Albasini meets the man with the hammer. He can't follow Barredo anymore, who continues solo.
38km to go
Barredo keeps on increasing the margin to the peloton. At the summit of the 3rd climb, the Alto de Santa Maria de la Alameda, he has a margin of 10'33 (!!) to a 53-rider peloton. This means he is the virtual GC-leader.
20km to go
The immense heat (35 degrees), the insane numbers of height metres and constantly riding at an altitude of over 1000 metres causes some important victims. Daniel Martin (Garmin), GC's number 7, has been dropped by the peloton. Together with riders as Richie Porte and JJ Rojas, he is already 1'45 behind the peloton (35 riders), with still 1 climb to go.
11km to go
The final climb has begun and Barredo still has a margin of 9'30 to the peloton. Philippe Gilbert is the first rider that attacks out of the peloton, instead of helping his team leader and GC-leader JJ Cobo. Alberto Contador and Juan Mauricio Soler try to counter, whereas Robert Gesink and JJ Cobo don't.
8km to go
Robert Gesink manages to pull the 3 back, and Gilbert attacks again, this time with 8km to go. Cobo counters, and this is the moment for our Dutch leader to do the same.
Finish
Meanwhile at the finish line in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Carlos Barredo finishes off a 65 solo ride (and 120km attack) with a great win. The clock starts ticking whether it'll be enough for him to take over the GC-lead.
5km to go
Robert Gesink is the only one that can follow Philippe Gilbert's attack, and the 2 have a margin of 20 seconds to a chasing group with Cobo (GC 1), Contador (3), Moreno (4), Kiserlovski (5), De Gendt (6), Txurruka (8), Denifl (9), Soler (10), Astarloza (20) and Mosquera (26).
Apparently Gilbert has listened to what his DS shouted to him, as he stops working, trying to let the chasing group catch him and Gesink again.
Finish
Gesink gives all he has got left to maintain the gap in the descend, but he can't fight a group of 10 riders. Gilbert even outsprints him for the 2nd place, with the group of 10 finishing in the same time. And as they finish 6'50 behind Barredo, it means that Barredo is the new GC-leader!
28 riders finish outside the time limit, among them sprinters as Keukeleire, JJ Haedo and Hutarovytch.

Today's Winner
Word from the DS
For sure, Gesink showed today that he is the best of the GC-contenders when it comes to climbing. Tomorrow's stage to the summit of La Covatilla (20km at 5.8%) can already bring him the red jersey! For now, it's the green one he'll be wearing.

Well, it's pretty flat and then the final climb. Think 2500 height metres or so, so it's a mountain stage

Stage 9
The 9th stage is the 2nd one with a mountain top finish. The route after the start in VillacastÃn is pretty flat, until 20km before the finish. Then the road starts to ascend over 20.4km at an average gradient of 5.2% to the summit of La Covatilla.
82km to go
And we see Gregory Bernard in the BOTD today. He attacked out of the peloton shortly before the summit of the Puerto de la Cruz de Hierro, with th goal of collecting a few KOTM-points, but the peloton took it that easy, he had a margin of over 1 minute at the summit.
Halfway the stage, he has been joined by Matthew Lloyd (Astana), Daniel Navarro (Caja Rural), Trent Lowe (Sony Ericsson), Edwin Carjaval (Colombia), Serguei Lagutin (Qantas), Iban Mayoz (Euskaltel), Mitja Mahoric (BMC) and Maxim Belkov (Katusha). They have a margin of 6'42 to the peloton.
34km to go
The margin gets cut back with 4 minutes in the next 50 kilometres, when Daniel Martin attacks out of the peloton. Desperate in making up the time he lost yesterday, the Irish can't wait for the foot of La Covatilla.
11km to go
The domestiques of Movistar (GC-leader Barredo) and Dexia (Cobo) increase the pace with the goal to catch Martin. Consequently, also the bOTD gets caught early in the ascend of La Covatilla. The first rider to attack out of the peloton, with 11km to go is Radio Shack's Egor Silin.
9km to go
Of course Silin gets caught quickly, and the next one to attack is GC's number 2 Juan José Cobo. Gesink recognizes the danger and he moves to the front of the group and increases his pace.
5km to go
Cobo's attack causes a split in the peloton, and only 29 (well, with 5km to go and after 15km of climbing, you can also say "still" ) riders are left in the first group. Also the red jersey of Carlos Barredo is present in it. Kiserlovski and Gesink are in the lead, with strong winds (over 60 km/h) preventing more attacks to happen.
2500m to go
Kiserlovski tries to attack with 2500m to go, but with a strong head wind, he can't get out of the 1st group of 18 riders.
1500m to go
Now this is something you don't see that often. 18 riders, almost next to each other, with 1.5km to go in a 20km climb. It's almost a sur place at the slopes of La Covatilla
Contador on the left side of the road and Gesink in the middle have taken the lead, probably both of trying not to get boxed in before the sprint.
Finish
Contador and Gesink make it a 2-men sprint, with the Spaniard being the strongest. He takes his 12th win of the season. Behind Gesink is a 10-second gap (yes, it is!!!) to JJ Cobo, and the other 15 riders. Big losers today are Belgiums Thomas De Gendt and Jelle Vanendert, who finish 2'52 behind Contador.

Today's Winner
Word from the DS
Strange..... I think that is the best way to describe the way the final ascend developed.
Anyway, tomorrow it's time for the big time trial, 42 almost flat kilometres. Think Contador has the biggest chance of taking over the red jersey, with Gesink and Cobo as the numbers 2 and 3.
