@ all: Thanks. At these long climbs, Gesink shoould be the strongest. But there are also hilly stages coming up, with him being not as strong as some of his opponents...

Stage 5
The Vuelta is known for it's many hilly stages, including some very steep uphill finishes. Stage 5 is one of these stages, with 200 kilometres from Sierra Nevada to Valdepeñas de Jaén, including 2 ascends of the Alto de Valdepeñas (7.0km at 5.8%, 2nd summit 9km before the finish) and an uphill finish in the streets of Valdepeñas de Jaén with gradients up to 17%! This makes a total amount of 3192 height metres.
122km to go
The BOTD arrives at the summit of the Alto de Valdepeñas for the first time. Stijn Devolder (Vacansoleil), Alan Pérez (AndalucÃa), Wesley Sulzberger (Qantas), Lars Boom (Saxo Bank), Heinrich Haussler (Radio Shack), Yukiya Arashiro (Europcar) and the Red Bull-duo Paul Voss and Gerald Ciolek have a margin of 6'06 to the peloton.
14km to go
The peloton doesn't chase the BOTD at full speed, so while having started the 2nd ascend of the Alto de Valdepeñas with a margin of 4'04, the 8 know that one of them will win the stage.
JoaquÃm RodrÃguez has attacked out of the peloton, but Purito hasn't got the legs anymore for this punch. Next to attack is Philippe Gilbert, who gets countered by his countryman Thomas De Gendt.
12km to go
Devolder, Haussler, Pérez and Voss have dropped the other 8 in the ascend. They lead Gilbert, De Gendt, RodrÃguez and Amets Txurruka by 3'08. The next riders to attack are Beñat Intxausti, Javier Moreno, and GC-leader Juan José Cobo! Daniel Martin and Alberto Contador are able to counter, but Robert Gesink can't. These short climbs don't suit him, as he gets helped by the young Luxembourg Gregory Bernard.
9km to go
Devolder crests the summit as the first one, with Pérez, Voss and Haussler still close behind. A group of 7 follows at 2'07: Cobo, Gilbert, Moreno, De Gendt, Txurruka, Martin and Contador.
8km to go
Robert Gesink follows at 2'59, with Bernard still helping him. In the descend towards Valdepeñas de Jaén, the 2 manage to close the gap to first Michel Kreder and RodrÃguez, and they also see the group Cobo-Contador in front of them. Apparently, the riders in that group don't want to help each other, so the pace has dropped.
2500m to go
At the foot of the final hill in Valdepeñas de Jaén, Gesink is back in the group of favourites. With 2.6km at an average gradient of 7.1% and max of 17% awaiting, a lot of time can be gained or lost. It's Philippe Gilbert who attacks again, desperately trying to get the stage win, with the 4 leaders still 2'16 in front of them.
1km to go
The stage win is gone for the group of favourites, as the 4 leaders have finished the steepest part of the climb. Gilbert is leading the chasing group at the part of 17%, with De Gendt and Cobo behind him. Gesink tries to follow Cobo, but the lactate acid is running out of his ears and nose, as he starts to crack.
Finish
Alan Pérez is by far the strongest of the BOTD, easily dropping his 3 breakaway buddies in the final climb and giving his team AndalucÃa a great win in the most important race for them. Voss beats Haussler or the 2nd place at '30.
Gilbert is the first of the group of favourites to cross the finish line. He and Thomas De Gendt and Juan José Cobo finish at 1'07 and got a small gap to the others. Javier Moreno and Robert Gesink finish at 1'26 and a bigger group with Contador, Txurukka, Martin, Bernard and Vanendert finish at 1'41.

Word from the DS
This was one of the stages that we knew Gesink would loose time. He simply has a lot of problems with these short and steep walls. Mostly thanks to Gregory Bernard, he looses only 19 seconds. Let's bring on these long climbs!

A tough day for Gesink But it's good that he never really panicked!
What a tough stage, not a flat meter! |

@ Ian: One of the most difficult stages indeed, especially with domestique getting water bottles...
@ sutty: Think so!
@ Jakstar: I believe he is the biggest favourite to win the Vuelta. ANd thanks about the reports.
@ TTspecialist: Thanks. About the motivation, take a break when you need one, develop the writing style, layout etcetera, and just keep on having fun!!M ruless: It sure does!
@ TimoCycling: I will never be able to keep up with Ian's speed, so as long as he keeps the motivation.....

I hear you there! I have that problem in the Canadian Classics and also in the Ardennes Classics (unless I have a super-team). |

Stage 6
After yesterday's hard work, today's stage is a bit more flat. But the 184 kilometres from Úbeda to Córdoba are still very difficult. Especially the ascend of the Alto de San Jeronimo, with the summit only 10km before the finish will cause some gaps and prevent a mass sprint.
72km to go
We have decided to do it a little bit different today. As we believe that the race will explode at the Alto de San Jeronimo due to the strong hilly riders as Gilbert, we want to be in the breakaway. And Peter Sagan is the one to do this for us. Together with Wesley Sulzberger (Qantas), Heinrich Haussler (Radio Shack), Stijn Devolder (Vacansoleil), Paul Voss (Red Bull), Mickaël Delage (Europcar), WIm De Vocht (Omega Pharma) and the BMC-duo of Mitja Mahoric and Robert Vrecer, they lead the peloton by 6 minutes.
Due to the strength of this BOTD, the peloton doens't let them get away too far. 2 riders are trying to bridge the gap, namely Carlos Barredo (Movistar) and Paul Martens (Rabobank).
20km to go
Even before the foot of the Alto de San Jeronimo, Martens and Barredo have joined the BOTD. They start the climb with a 3-minute lead to the peloton. Thomas De Gendt (GC 6) is the first to attack out of the peloton, followed by Alberto Contador (GC 3) and Philippe Gilbert. Both Robert Gesink and GC-leader Cobo continue at their own pace.
19km to go
Sagan hears that Gilbert is coming his way at a very high speed, so he increases the pace and is waiting for those who'll join him. Martens, Barredo, Voss and Haussler will join him, the others get dropped.
10km to go
In one impressive rush, Philippe Gilbert bridges the 3 minute gap to the leading group and drops them immediately. Only Martens and Barredo are able to follow him. The 3 arrive at the summit of the ALtode San Jeronimo with a gap of 32 seconds to Sagan and Sulzberger. Haussler, Voss and De Gendt follow at '47 and the peloton at 1'26. Contador again couldn't continue his attack and has been caught by the other favourites. Only Jelle Vanendert isn't present in this group and will drop out of the GC top 10 to 11th place.
Finish
Gilbert leaves Barredo and Martens behind in the descend towards Córdoba, and takes his 2nd win of the season. Barredo and Martens finish at '36 and Sagan outsprints De Gendt for the 4th place at 1'03. The peloton is awarded with the same time as Sagan, although they finish about 40 seconds later...

Good tactic, but too bad that there were too many strong hilly riders present in the BOTD. Gilbert was outstanding today!
