Well, that's cos most of them are shite. The good Kazakhs got busted for dope. (Mass generalisation).
EDIT: And you don't think it's a coincidence that Armstrong happens to mention to La Gazzeta dello Sporto that he's going to go off and make his own team.

The agreement was that at every grand tour or major classic, the team would have to bring at least 3 kazakhstanis. They followed that to the letter....until now.
And of course there's the Lance news that's clearly consequence of this sponsor collapse.
EDIT: As I can see now by rjc's edit, I'm not the only one who thinks the Armstrong thing is very obviously linked.

The sponsor money Armstrong could attract would be phenomenal

I think Mellow Johnny's probably has enough turn over in a year to sponsor a continental team by itself.

Cavendish calls Olympics overrated
For a cyclist, speedster Mark Cavendish says, riding in the Olympics "is not even in the top 10 of what you can achieve.
Bingo.
Even though he's talking about all types of cycling (track, road, etc.), I have to say I think he's spot on and I've never understood why so many cyclists obsess over the olympics.
I don't care if it was an olympic year, I'd still put the worlds way ahead of the olympics in my priorities if I were a rider with any chance.

So you were surprised that Cancelara went for the Olympics and not the worlds. Remeber the Olympics only come every four years and so is much harder to win, also if you are from a country where cycling is not the main sport then the olympics is youre big chance to get mass support. Simillarly if you are patriotic then qinning golds at the olympics will hellp your country more than gold at the worlds. Finally most countries give large monetary bonus' for winning at the olympics wereas world champs which be much less well funded

I wasn't surprised, no. I'm saying I personally don't understand the motivation to do it. However, Cancellara's case is different. He's already won 2 world championships, so it's only natural he aims for something else.

Olympics are something different.. The media, the (probably) millions of spectators, the gold, etc.. It's normal that a cyclist would want to win there, he would probably be most known for what he had done there than what he had done anywhere else (known to the non-cycling watchers of course) and there they can fight for the love of their country

Not really harder to win, just rarer to win.
Which countries give bonuses for winning at the Olympics in cycling? Certainly not Britain. At least with the Rainbow Jersey you have something to show for it.

well I would say that it is harder to wil something if it occurs less often

https://speedendurance.com/2007/11/22/...-athletes/ says Australian and Canada do and https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olymp...579533.stm says that britain is considering it, I know South Africa does although haven't looked for a link

well this is cheap..
Gerd Kanter, who won the gold in discus, stands to receive 1.6 million kroons and his Icelandic coach Vesteinn Hafsteinsson is set to get 800,000 kroons from the government, spokespeople said.
That meaning 100 000 euros and 50 000 euros..no bullshit |

The olympics mean nothing to cyclists, compared to the big classics..
Cancellara would much rather win the Tour of Flanders or Paris-Roubaix again, then an olympic title, believe you me. |

Its perhaps surprising then that Andy Schleck lists the Olympics as the race he would most like to win |

Riders say those things. He also said a few days ago that Liége was the most beautiful classic and his favorite one

I'd say in the world of cycling the WC are obviously more important than the olympics.
However in the world o sport the order is opposite.
I think a common sports fan with no favourite sport in particular would probably know the cyclist olympic champion easier than he would know the cyclist world champion.
Anyway I agree with Guido the Olympics spirit of friendly competition between all the peoples of the world isn't completely true anymore since pros were allowed to compete.
