You cant blame the ref!!! Yes he made bad decisions but you have got to look at who decides who is refereeing the game. As that man should lose his job.
Yes you can. It's called responsibility. He is a professional.

He refs in the norweigen league. That is no where near the tempo that the champions league final is played at so how would you expect him to perform. The semi final and final refs should come from france german england italy and spain depending on who is in the games.
I agree with the main idea but it's not that simple.

I dont see why the ref is getting slatted because he was out of his depth So whoever came up with the ban for the ref should shut up or are we going to ban every ref who makes a bad decision. He wasnt in any good positions to see the penalties. Apart from the 1st claim which was not a the defender came across and cleared the ball.
To be in a good position to judge the plays is one of the basics for being a good referee, so yes, again, it was his fault.

If you want to moan at a ref moan at the linesmen they were very poor especially with the pique handball. Anyway drogba is an idiot he needs a big ban and i hope he gets one. He was pretending he was injured so he got brought off and starts moaning at the end when he had 2 clear chances. 1 at the nou camp and one at the bridge if he had put them away we wouldnt be moaning.
So, when a ref fails it's the guy who put him there's fault, when a player fails it's not the manager's fault? Why?
Ad wrote:
Also what about the abidal red card and the [penalty again henry at the nou camp hey ???
Isn't that moaning at the referee?

If people are going to say to ban the ref we will have no refs in 5years time so go and have a game of football as you obviously have not played properly before.

.
The last two seasons Øvrebø have been ref in 8 CL games.. So It's wrong to say he dont know this tempo..
He wont get a ban. But I think UEFA wont use him for a while..

..............
The bad thing is he had 4-6 bad decisions like the red card.
I think that Webb was sent home at the World Cup 2006 because he showed a player 2 times the yellow card and not yellow and then red.
When you have a referee who done so many bad calls then Chelsea should think about that he shouldn´t referee any Chelsea international match anymore (which is allowed)
When you talk about of "A!! decision" which is just stupid because he made 4-6 bad calls and the game speed in the norwegian league? Even if he would referee a woman game in the norwegian league (which should be played 200% slower) he should be able as a UEFA referee to have just 1 and not 4 bad decisions in a game
When you are happy that Chelsea haven´t won then you "obviously have not played football properly before " or you aren´t a neutral football fan.

Didn't watch the match but saw highlights and the referee looked terible. I remember at the world cup a few years ago, think it was 2002, when FIFA tried to use referee's from random countries for some unknown reason. one of the England games we had some kind of African referee and he didn't have a clue how to handle that class of game.
my point is that for big games there should be a group of referee's from various leagues, mostly the big 5-6 who should be in charge of every game from the last 16 onwards. You can't start throwing in refs from the minor leagues for one of the biggest games of the season. at the end of the day there are millions of pounds at stake. it's like putting someone from you local branch of Lloyds in charge of the Bank of England. your asking for trouble.
FIFA are in a no win situation by putting in an unknown ref from a lower league. if he fails then they get critisised, if he does well then thats his job. why risk it for such a big game.
Man U will win. Barca have just proved how they struggle against the English style of football. Man U will be tight like Chelsea but also have the forwards to take advantage of Barca's poor defence |

What league you are ref in normally doens't show how good you are, the worlds best ref could just aswell be from Norway as he could be from England or Italy.

FIFA always use referees from a variety of countries because each domestic league has different emphasis' on fouls, i.e. I suspect (without any evidence) that penalties don't get given as easily in Norway. Hence you use a variety of referees because if you used all the EPL refs then the EPL players would have an advantage.
That said referees who are used to officiating 'lesser' leagues may not be used to the pace of the big games and hence struggle to keep up. I don't think this is the case either as this guy has refereed 30 odd games in the CL and as such I am confident that he is perfectly capable.
I haven't seen the game but I suspect he just had a bad day, it happens to everyone. I seem to recall Poll having a shocker in the World Cup where he gave someone 3 yellow cards.

yes but it determines what style of football you are used to refereeing and the pace you are used to playing at. Most bad decisions come from poor positioning due to being out of place on the field. that is much more likely with a ref who isn't used to reffing such high tempo and important games.
And yes, he had reffed champs league games before. but there is a difference between olympiakos vs shaktar in the group stages then the semi-final between 2 of the best teams in the world. when the games are of such importance only the best refs should be used.

He also refereed Villarreal-Arsenal in the quarter-finals, so you can't blame it on his experience. Plus, in the situation where Alves pulled down Malouda, he was placed really well, so it's just a disgrace that he didn't give Chelsea that penalty....

You know Øvrebø was the ref when Barca played vs Lyon in March.....
So it's not the first time he is ref when Barca plays..

No matter how shitty the ref was you have to look at it this way. Barca and Chelsea each scored 1 goal from direct play, whether or not there should be penalty can always be discussed...
Over 2 matches I don't think Chelsea was that much better, and thus pretty 50/50... It is all down to the fact that Barcelona always try to score, eventhough they are in deep shit, while Chelsea always seem to think that a 1 goal advantage is enough...
Atleast that is how I see it... Bad referees are all over the place, and that performance was one of them, sure... But I can remember Chelsea having advantage from refs before... |

I think that Man United will take home the win, but I'm hoping for Barca!
