What a comeback after the problems earlier in the race! You should always forfeit 10 minutes in the first days to make the Grand Tours more exciting! |

@AbhishekLFC: Urán has shown some weakness, not impossible but he will be difficult on the final TT.
@The Schleck Fan: have been a nice last few days, may it continue.
@Ripley: Have been a fun comeback, but don't forget the field is rather weak. We have got the no.1 favorite supported by what I also think is the strongest team. Will be different in the TDF, Froome, Quintana, Contador and everyone bringing their top squad’s

Nibali is doing great. Typical Nibali to start off so bad but come back. Realistic gameplay |

6/5-28/5 2016 Giro d'Italia
20/5 Stage 14/21 Farra d'Alpago – Corvara 210.1 km
Another sunny spring day in northern Italy with absolutely no wind.
The road will be rising more and more for over 70 km up to Passo Pordio, a perfect opportunity for any climber you have lost his option in the GC and as you might expect we get a breakaway with good climbers all far back in the GC mixed with a few optimistic domestique’s.
They are José Herrada (Movistar), Yury Trofimov (Tinkoff), Jan Polanc (Lampre), Jan Bakelants (Ag2r), Warren Barguil (Giant), Stefano Pirazzi (Bardiani), Jérémy Roy (FDJ) and Lars Bak (Lotto).
When the peloton start the official climb (9.2 km) the breakaway has 5’08”, BMC is leading the pack in a moderate pace, trying not to drain the team.
But that is not the agenda of Astana as soon as the gradient is above 6% they take over. It is Cataldo pulling as hard as he can.
Cataldo is leading over Passo Pordio and Passo Sella, but he is not over his crash and at Passo Gradena and Passo Compolongo Tanel Kangert takes over.
The pace in the breakaway have been very high, the leading group is reduced to just Yury Trofimov, Jan Bakelants and Warren Barguil, they got 8’20 to the yellow jersey then they start the small but hard Colle Santalucia, 53 km to the finish.
The pace set by Astana have not been hard enough to hold the distance to the breakaway down, neither has is reduced the favourite group much, 57 riders left at the start of Passo Giau.
Warren Barguil leaves the others behind at front starting the hunt for a back to back stage victory.
In the favourite group Nibali has used up all his help, he attacks with just a few hundred meter to the top of Passo Giau. The result is a group of Nibali, Porte, Kreuziger and A. Yates, not great for Miguel López but the GC is more important than the “White”.
When Barguil start his climb to Passo Valparola the situation is:
Trofimov at 1’35”
Barkelants at 4’09”
Group Porte at 5’47”
Group Urán at 6’55 (Landa, Amador, Pozzovivo, López, Geniez) 17 riders.
Porte has been leading down from Valparola, now he is growing tired of the situation and tries to get the others to start working with him.
But everyone is very tires after 190 km of hard climbs. Porte is still leading when the group catches Barkelants.
But then Nibali get a message over the radio that Urán has just attacked from the next group, Nibali “suddently” feels much better and immediately attacks, 20 km to the line.
Nibali again takes advantages of his perfect downhill laying some distance to group Porte, and also catch up with Warren Barguil close to the finish.
Warren Barguil wins over Vincenzo Nibali in Corvara. Richie Porte 3rd losing 28 sec.
Evaluation:
Overall:
Warren Barguil lost any options to get a good GC in Giro d'Italia on stage 4 and 5, possibly after a crash that was not caught on camera, but with his 2nd mountain stage win in a row he has shown that the is one of the young upcoming French rider, we should follow closely in the coming grand tours. Warren Barguil also won two stages in the 2013 Vuelta a España.
In the top of GC the worst result today was Riccardo Zoidl and Miguel López both losing 6’55”
The most positive was advancing Roman Kreuziger from 6th to 4th and A. Yates from 9th to 7th.
Astana:
A good stage for Nibali taking 4’21” on Urán moving to 2nd
Another good thing was that Dario Cataldo seems to be improving.
Miguel Ángel López lost the youth, but realistically is was not like that he could hold Yates behind him.

Great stage once more. It's a real pity the overall win is probably out of reach. Unless Richie is about to have his traditional off day.

@Kiserlovski01/sutty68: Seems impossible, but so did 2nd, Nibali/Astana will off course try on every stage, but hopefully without jeopardizing what we got now.

Just a short update from the ASTANA U23 team
19/5-22/5 2016 Ronde de l'Isard d'Ariège
The race is held in Midi-Pyrénées and contains 3 mountain stages and one hilly stage.
20 years old Italian Lido Franzini riding on Astana U23, came 3rd overall, as mentioned earlier in the season, he also came 8th in U23 Liège–Bastogne–Liège.
Astana will do their best to sign him asap.

If Nibali were to win the Giro it'd be a truely legendary comeback. But the podium now seems certain and even that's a great achievement. |

@Ripley: Thanks It is unlikely that he can take almost 6 min. on a Porte who seems to be in fine shape, but anything can happen.

6/5-28/5 2016 Giro d'Italia
21/5 Stage 15/21 Castelrotto – Alpe di Siusi ITT 11.3 km
Another sunny spring day in northern Italy with just a light breeze.
Antonio Viola (Nippo - Vini Fantini) is the first rider in start house and will be the first in the hot seat with 29’59”, quite surprisingly the young Italian sprinter sits there for quite a while.
Until it is finally taken by Andrey Zeits starting 64 riders after Viola. New best 29’28”
Andrey Zeits is only allows a brief moment if the hot seat, then first Wilco Kelderman (LottoNL) with 29’08” and soon after Luca Chirico (Bardiani) with 29’01” takes the seat.
Chirico hold the seat while 33 riders passes the line, but then Sébastien Reichenbach (FDJ) takes it with new best 28’51”
Also Reichenbach will get just a brief moment in the chair, before first Warren Barguil sets new best 28’02 and soon after Fabio Aru with 27’46”
Aru sits in the Hot Seat watching a total of 51 rider cross the line, the first rider to best him is also the first GC top 10 rider to cross the line, Riccardo Zoidl set new best with just 2 sec. 27’44”
Next to cross the line GC 9th Gianluca Brambilla loses 23 sec. to Zoidl
GC 8th Miguel Ángel López Moreno a little better he loses 12 sec.
GC 7th Adam Yates set new best with 27’10”, 34 sec faster than Zoidl
GC 6th Mikel Landa Meana loses 19” to Yates
GC 5th Andrey Amador Bikkazakova loses 19” to Yates
GC 4th Roman Kreuziger loses just 1 sec. to Yates
GC 3rd Rigoberto Urán loses 15” to Yates
GC 2nd Vincenzo Nibali with new best 26'28” 43 sec faster than Yates.
Race leader Richie Porte is the last rider to cross the finish line, he loses 22 sec. to Nibali.
Evaluation:
Overall:
This was the 2nd stage win of this year’s Giro for Vincenzo Nibali adding up to a total of 10 grand tour stage wins, and his 6th season victory.
All of the top riders did fairly well losing relative limited time against each other, compared to the time gaps previously established.
Most positive result was Adam Yates who took a stage podium, by media and bookmakers considered a top 6-8 rider.
Astana:
Another good stage for Astana, Nibali got his 2nd stage win and took a bit of time from the nearest competitors.
A little disappointing that Fabio Aru could just make it inside top 10, now that his injuries are completely healed. May well be a question of motivation being this far back in GC.
Miguel López did pretty good with his 11th compared to what the team had expected.
